Thoughts on tradesmen as a job?

I'm a sophomore in college majoring in Stats but dislike it. Is being an electrician a good idea? How long until you can work independently?

You could do this with anything. You can start your own business right now if you wanted to.

No but thousands of hours in apprenticeship and certifications.
