$500k is the minimum I would need to retire. My plan would be to invest it all in 7%-8% yielding investment grade bonds though for a a safer $35,000 - $40,000 annual cashflow. Still, you would need to save and reinvest a percentage of this to keep up with inflation. I would also have to move to a rural area with a low cost of living and wouldn't have very much extra money to do some of the things I want. One thing I've found is that if you already have $500k saved, you are probably only about 5 years of saving and investing away from being a millionaire so I would just stick out those extra years for much more security.
3 years is pretty unrealistic though man. 10 years is probably more like it under very ideal circumstances.
