I visit this board very infrequently. I'm generally smart with my money but I'm no guru by any means. I just max my 401k, started doing my ROTH, manage my debt efficiently and smartly, etc. Probably in the bottom 25 percentile as far as market knowledge goes when it comes to this board though.
I just started up Betterment to get my feet wet in investing. I know that I could get better returns just buying those funds directly that Betterment is investing my money in, but I'm putting very little money in weekly (25/wk) and going to see how it goes.
Betterment's UI is incredible and the fees are very reasonable (.35% for <10k which comes out to just $36/year at $9,999)
I think it's very useful for certain people. My sister has a minimum wage job at 30, no savings or assets, and to be honest she is going to retire with no 401k, no ROTH, and no savings and that worries me. She's not with it enough to manually invest so this automatically debiting $25/week or something would be perfect for her. Even if the return is mediocre (3-6%) it could be a great thing over 35 years.
Once I play with this a bit I'll just be buying the funds directly through Schwab probably.
Overall it's not the most efficient but is definitely a good tool for certain people.
Thoughts please? I generally want to hear what people think of these services.
