If the area is heavily wooded and in a cold climate you can go around asking local farmers if they would let you remove their fallen timber to sell, most would say yes as it gives them more arable land.
Buy a Chainsaw & Splitter, you can claim these as a tax deduction with depreciation if you work as a business. Sell firewood.
This model suits me at the moment (right vehicles available, freezing climate, tonnes of wooded farmland and friendly farmers)

If you were good with gemstones/fossicking you could learn to facet stones and maybe make silver jewellery, getting good first is the key. You could fossick yourself or travel and buy assuming you knew the values and didn't get screwed in the process. Sell the stones etc online. The key here is a bunch of skill that'll take at least a year to get up to scratch on.
OR
Are there any interesting plants that you could grow, assuming you could get the acreage, eg Lemon Balm? You might be able to market your own line of tea or balms in the local shops.
Beekeeping?
These are all things I'm looking at right now myself.
You can make soap or trinkets and sell to tourists. Many of these little towns have a tourism industry of people from the nearby cities visiting on the weekend. You don't need to live in a "tourist town" to do it but every summer you can have a schedule of flea markets, music events, craft fairs, farmers markets etc.
