Ok I feel like this place is a better place to ask this than /ic/ because they know shit about the business side of art.

To start off, I am an illustrator/cartoonist. I tried freelance for a few years but it wasn't working because I sucked at marketing myself. Was getting paid for commissions few and far apart.
I currently work full time in a creative field. Not illustration but hope to get there one day. My dream job would be doing art for a cartoon/video game/etc.

So a friend of mine said a collegue of his is pitching a cartoon show idea to a major network like CN or Nickelodeon and they're looking for a storyboard artist.

Friend shows them my work, they love it, so they asked me if I want to storyboard for them.
I ask them how many they need done, when to have it done and what their budget is.

They reply back that it depends on me. They need just 1 storyboard right now to show the network in order to hopefully score a green light and funding for the show.
They said if I'd only be interested in doing 1 episode, they can work out a rate

OR

They said if I'm interested in being the art director/lead vision for the show then they can offer me an ownership/percentage stake in the show.

So first it was just storyboarding, and now I'm offered to be the art director? I feel like becoming art director is asking for too much of a commitment, especially when this is a guy I've never met. At the same time I feel like it could be a great opportunity. Then of course, theres a chance it may not get picked up and I don't get paid for my time.

Basically I don't know what to do. What would you guys do in this position?

Could I ask to be paid for just the storyboards I did if the show doesn't get picked up? And if it does, should I ask for the percentage instead? I'm not exactly sure how this process works and don't know what to email back to the guy.

Ask them what their budget is. Ask for a few days.
Tell them you're offering their budget price if not just under it.

They better make it big if you want to get on with them and CN/Nick.

Personally, I'd give them the story boards for a price. See what they do with the big network. If they start gaining some momentum, hop on. In the meantime, only sell storyboards to them at/around their budget price.

It sounds like they don't know what a going rate is for your services, so find their budget and there you go. Capitalize!

So basically, ask to do both? To be charged a flat rate for the storyboards for the pitch and then take on the art director position and get the percentage if they're greenlit?

What if they're hoping it's either one choice or the other? Like if its greenlit, would they expect me to refund the money they paid because I would be getting a percentage instead?

This sounds like an OK way to go.

You hold all the cards, desu, you're the artist. Cartoons, in large part, succeed because of good artwork.

Sign on for a rate for the first go and then discuss ownership after that.

You're going to be the artist, if you pull anchor with such a fledgling idea and the visual display is what made the idea take off, you're vital. (as opposed to something that's old as fuck that someone can easily replicate because they can just study the show)

If they refuse that type of idea...........hell, maybe hop on for a percentage, what's the worst thing that could happen? You waste your time?

Well first off, I don't even have any idea what this show is about yet or even what the characters look like. I assumed since they were looking for a storyboard artist, they already had character designs made up. Storyboard artist =/= designer.

So now they're asking if Im interested in an art director / lead visionary instead so I'm confused as to what they're asking for. A story board artist or an art director or both?

In a more discreet way, ask /co/. Quite a few of them actually work in the industry.

Best advice I can give you is start drawing furry porn.

I would post this on /co/ but who knows if these guys browse /co/ themselves?

This. I had a friend who started off doing normal art commissions, didn't have success until he had a bunch of furries at his doorstep. He started catering to furries since then.
