I built a computer for my son about 2 months ago but decided to hold off on buying a new video card for it because I had heard of the new cards coming out.

Glad I waited because I was reading about the Geforce 1080 today and it's going to be an absolute beast!!! And it's priced at $599 or $699 so that's not all that bad either.

When I built the computer I was going to get a 970 for about $300-350. But with this new card coming out I think I'll spend the extra money and get the 1080.

There is a 1070 coming out as well so I will wait until I see the specs on that before I buy the 1080.

Personally I really hope they do and if you look at benchmarks over time AMD cards get generally better as their drivers become more mature while nvidia goes all out when they are released and get slower over time. I'm not an AMD fanboy by any means having gone through many nvidia cards throughout my time gaming but I just switched to AMD buying a 390 and I'm really impressed with it. I'm not happy with them at the moment is the thing. My drivers keep, for a lack of a better word, corrupting, meaning my PC blue screens as soon as it tries to boot into Windows, so I have to either system restore or use the driver cleanup tool AMD provides in safe mode, then re-install the drivers. He's just going to send it to me for free, so I definitely won't turn it down, but I don't know if I'll have the same issues with nvidia or not. I know that running one GPU is always best for compatibility and all, but I've had a string of bad luck with my current PC and I'd rather not deal with even more hassle if possible.

The price per performance on enthusiast cards are laughable... What everyone is saying now is what everyone said when the 680 was released when compared to the 580. 680's aren't worth a shit now with the 2gb memory cap and the 1080 won't be worth a shit because of poor async performance. Nvidia is high tailing it behind vulcan so they can avoid the problem with async performance while also prepping their future where they leave the GPU market because of falling profits and focus on car tech and mobile. AMD has this in the bag which is why they aren't stretched to compete with the 1080... all the consoles are AMD branded which means all games and their engines are being designed to run on AMD hardware in their most profitable market. Even Nvidia gameworks has to be tacked on unless it's a PC only release which are getting increasingly rare these days. Gameworks is going to be redundant in the next 2 years just like Physx.

The bluescreen says the display driver stopped responding and couldn't be recovered or something like that, the BCCode is 116, and I've googled both of those things and the only thing people are saying to do is clean reinstall your drivers, make sure your GPU is seated correctly, try a legacy driver, all of which I've tried with no success. Someone says upgrading to Windows 10 fixed it for them, so I'm going to try that next.

Ill ask him to test it once he gets his 1080, even if installing Win10 helps with my current GPUs.

The Fury non-x is usually 4-6FPS less than a Fury X. It'll be fine. Also, you're looking at year old benchmarks. I have a 980 Ti and a Fury X, and with both at stock clocks (even a mild 980 Ti OC), the Fury X matches or beats it. So it see,s like the 1080 is not too good.

I crashed my R9 290X because of too much overclocking and now running on my GTX 680 again and honestly Im still fine with all games in 1080p.
Once I have lots of oney together for a 4k display I might change my opinion.

maybe your gpu is dying on you.

maybe getting artefacts? if yes, the oven-trick is working great for such issues. just dismantle the card as much as you can which is stripping the gpu from its cooler and its slotbracket, heat the oven at a temp of about 130°C and let your card roast for good 15mins.
dont forget to place it on tinfoil-balls you placed on each side of the card in order to get some space from the baking plate.thats how im doing it. others are lazy and just place it on a sheet of tinfoil

this oven trick may need a few tries. i needed to put my 280gtx three times in the oven back then while increasing the temps in 10°C steps from try to try.

first time it only worked about a week without any issues. the second time it took about 3 months until the issues reapeared. after the third time it worked for over a year or so until i finally got a newer card.
dont forget to buy some thermal-paste. you dont need to buy expensive shit for 10+€. I even used silicon based stuff for just 1€ and it worked, so the average shit your retailer sells to everyone else is good enough
