Thus people are placed in jobs that are not really necessary, but more busy work. Have a look at any bureaucratic process, I guarantee you that it's overblown and half of the people only work there, because they need a job.

They do not really produce anything, basically their job is to shovel shit from one side of the room to the next, where the next guy will pick it up.

Life seems pointless, because society is telling you, you need a job, you need to work and you need to contribute to society. At the same time, society doesn't need as many people to remain intact, so the work you do is largely pointless, making you feel pointless.

Personally I believe we're on the threshold of realizing that not every single human needs to contribute to society/work, for it to be sustainable, hurray for robots!
