Death.
Have you ever tried to imagine being dead? Not in the literal sense, what i mean is, like the fact that you don't exist, that your body doesn't exist, your toughts - gone, there is nothing, you are no more. Try to imagine that, like, actually try really really hard. Can you feel the crippling dread? The chills going through your spine? The feel that you, one day, will just cease to exist. Do you feel it 4chan? Can you relate?

God was once a creation of the human mind to rule over the weak and to give some questions an answer
But when people forgot they were who created this imaginary being, this same creation began to rule their lives, imposing what and what not to do
wake up from it. there is no god, it will never appear. but if you create one to calm your thoughts, rembember tomorrow that it was just a fantasy

Inaccurate. We leave a digital footprint that, in theory, if there's enough data, could one day create an approximation of me. This facsimile may not be "me", but in all shape and form will be indistinguishable from me. The real question OP is: What is life? This flesh and brittle bones? This heart? This slowly rotting body? Or are we merely a vehicle for something greater?

Guys, think of this:
There is the universe, created by big bang, the matter and antimatter, our little planet and ourselves. Now try to think of the universe as a whole, as an entity. Why? Maybe there is no god. There is certainly no meaning. But there is something. All those set of rules, physics, chemistry, atoms and their structure. Something must of have created this. Something. There is another plane of existence we cannot understand.

Also, the only way of achieving immortality is by pursuing science and robotics. Either we replace our bodies with immortal ones, or we connect ourselves to something resembling the Matrix. Why isn't the whole world pursuing that? Its like the ultimate goal.

I used to fear death because of exactly that however then I realized that being dead won't be the first time not existing. Before I developed a consciousnes, whenever that might have been, I too did not really exist in that sense.

For me ceasing to exist means a complete loss of consciousness, which might be intimidating but it really isn't.
You know what else is loss of consciousnes? Sleeping. Excluding dreams, you have no consciousness while sleeping whatsoever. From this point of view you basically experience death every night you fall asleep but nobody fears sleep now do they.

Another way to think of it: The universe is expanding. At some point it will retract. A very long time from now it will collapse in on itself and create an event horizon. At omega point all matter will revert to its original form. Yet, since time is so distorted all matter will revert infinitely thus every form of matter will be all it ever was all at once. This would mean, at least for a brief moment, you and everyone you know will be alive again infinitely stuck in the event horizon.

The laws of physics as we know them exist in this dimension because it could be no other way here. If not for the fracturing of and after the big bang resulting in the birth of the electron and the subsequent bonds made possible thereby, nothing as we know it would be.

We are life; instead of inert gas drifting through the cosmos endlessly, we are complex chains of complex molecules representing the universe knowing itself.

Think of the universe as a bubble in a much wider pool. Within the time that the bubble lives there can arise inside a form of life, a consciousness born of the unique environment of that bubble. When the bubble fades and reconstitutes itself with the unknown depths that gave it birth, so too shall the life, the consciousness, fade.

The goal then rests beyond death. The point of life is to live and attempt to attain the next step. If you cannot, you go with your bubble back to the ether. If you can, you will have reached beyond the base world of the physical. A microbe one day contemplating itself entirely and stepping into the larger world of its gods, beyond what it new prior as time and space.

You are talking about immortality of the physical? It has an inherent end date then. After the universe ends and the laws of physics no longer exist to support your continued existence, you'd end. Beyond the physical is a measure of life from a perspective that the physical inconsequential. Beyond this I can only conceive of moving to another universe with physical laws similar to your own. Of course, it may be possible that the laws of physics remain constant in all membranes due to the nature of the formation.
>>
>>693186938

In the same way a cup of flour isn't a cake. The definition of life isn't divinely objective and hasn't even been rigorously defined by scientists. For example, is a virus alive? Life in essence can be boiled down to a collection of 'things' (molecules, proteins, cells) that collectively compose a single entity that reproduces and metabolises.

>>
>>693179877
>have you
Yes. But, in order for that to be truly valid, I can't even mention " _______". You simply can't and don't; that's how. There are no intrinsic, noumenal things, nor are there extrinsic, phenomenal things.

There isn't anything. There isn't even the notion of anything, or the metaphysical concept of a non-being for non-being, to the point where you simply will not continue, and can not continue.

But, otherwise, I won't cease to exist when I die. I'll have an average of 75-110 years of "shelf life" in the memory of others, then I'll probably be lost and forgotten. Yet not completely either, because I understand and "remember" that there were once people alive during the 1600s, and while I never knew them by name, I know that they must have existed in some form- and some of their bones lie dormant right here and now, in a charnel pit/shallow grave/mass grave somewhere. I even -do- know some of them by name- thank history for their accursed immortality.

You have to get very anal about the metaphysical nature of "you", but ultimately, you're going to be around for as long as anything else is going to be around. Just not as a living human-shaped agent. I also can't level with you on feeling "dread" or "chills" about dying or no longer being. I'm glad that this is probably the case. The thought of "finally being at rest" will feel good right before I stop being alive (both physically and mentally)- and then I simply won't be, and everything will be fine, because dead men tell no stories (unless they left something behind).

Christ, I very much would not actively choose to be immortal- if I were, I'd have to be able to change what I am, beyond being a human-shaped thing. I need to continue to grow, and expand, and interact with things.

Otherwise? Just let me cease, like I'm meant to.

Immortal.

Not invincible, unacceleratable, or incapable of mitosis. Which means, if you lived forever, by extension, your cells must also live forever.

Which means they need to have a lot of new mechanics instilled upon them- like even more selective forms of cell death, so that you both don't turn into cancer, but also can heal if you are in fact injured somehow.

>where's all this telomerase going to go or even come from

You need to do a lot more than just prevent the capping of telomeres. The human body is a delicate balance of things- you change one staple, and you change them all. Unless you've perfected the science, in which it would be absurd to stop, or rely only upon, telomeres.

>>693189763
Probably also because most of us are used to the idea that we will all cease to be one day- and so we are incentivized to pursue certain goals, in stride or with due diligence (for the most part). Not only would overpopulation become an issue- but so would the amount of agency each and every immortal person would then possess. It would be not only an overpopulation crisis, but a stagnation of uniform progress with which to work with.

Imagine every possible bad idea being enacted over, and over, and over- with less and less available resources or means, with the fear of death non-existent. That's another reason you don't just give these things to every single person, ever.

Unless we can shoot ourselves across the stars, then that's an entirely different can of worms altogether.

I seem to remember that your memories and personality are determined by how the electrical signals passed between neurons, and how this path of firing one neuron after another passes through the brain. The neurons themselves dont hold any information per se, the electrical pulse path itself is essentially the 'memory'. those neurons fire in that path less and less as time goes on, which is why memories fade - all your memories are still available to access, if only you could trigger the correct path consciously. People with Eidetic (sp?) memories have incredible brainwave activity, allowing them access every experience they have ever had in detail.

Anyway, my point is, your consciousness is not based on physical matter, it's energy, and energy cannot be created or destroyed, merely converted into another form. Essentially we have all already been 'living' since time began, regardless of whether we have had consciousness of it or not.
>>
>>693191518
Lost you, like lost you some 83 billion miles from Earth doing something else entirely, spreading mercilessly and shooting more humans towards more telluric bodies... lost you because it was a pretty vague statement, or lost you because it was dumb?

Because, if we keep it strictly original-human-body-and-mind... I just meant to imply that one could solve the overpopulation crisis by offloading people into other environments/planets/habitats/general space, seeing as they'd be some kind, or the appropriate kinds, of immortal.

Yet, by doing so, it's possible that you could just create a temporary solution to the permanent problem of eventual overpopulation and resource depletion, for other people on other worlds with other stories and other smaller problems. Unless you have the means to commit actual alchemy- better known as material science, so you can materialize something that you need, from things that you don't.

Until you "repurpose" all of the possible, accessible matter around you, to which then... well.. you'll have to abandon the concept of living as an original-body-human-mind thing, and adopt "moving universes" or "realities", like living in a simulation. Or else you will just have to accept that you no longer have the matter or energy to do more than you already have, and that is it, full stop.
>>
>>693179877
I will stay alive in the memories of the people who's lives I've touched. Then they will eventually die and eventually all memories of me will fade.

That is kind of crazy though, all memories of me will likely die out within a few generations. But take a guy like Hitler or Justin Bieber, these guys will remain in the human consciousness until the end of humanity. People living in colonies on Mars 10,000 years from now will still be talking about Hitler.
>>
>>693182629
While immortality is probably not going to be cracked in our lifetime, I do believe eventually scientists will unlock the genome in lobsters and starfish which allow them to essentially live forever/grow back body parts, providing they have enough food and are disease free of course (look it up) and transfer or manipulate those genetic codes into the human gene pool. Of course the rich will essentially become pure hedonists and the poor will be even more downtrodden from their immortal overlords, but such is the human condition.

"Alas, Hitler was a man of his time, and brilliant, if not also mired with faults. His actions undoubtedly shaped our world, for better and for worse.

Yet, his actions were far more tame than the actions of Tevak the Horrible, responsible for the complete destruction of the planet New Horizon, as well as it's sister satellites. The tragedy has still left a quite visible mark on the face of Humanity, with no potential for positive yield, even today."

To all the people saying they want immortality, think of how bored you'd be with eternal life.

I've considered that our brain is just a prison cell the prisoner is none other than the psyche. whenever we get hurt, it is just our brain punishing us, and that whenever one thinks of death/dying, the brain inflicts influence on the consciousness. Fear, sorrow, guilt, regret, the emotions we feel as the thought of death skims our minds, are we just puppets to our brain and the instinctual emotions that come with it? is there really a belief as extreme as free will when all these limitations are present?

dead is dead, whatever that is.
you can't think about death, it'll fuck you up. i think of it as the end of this bullshit.
with my luck, death will be the beginning of a new stream of bullshit.

tldr; fuck death, i'll deal with it when i get there.

this along with I wont even know the difference because i'll be dead. I don't fear death, but the pain associated with it is what I worry about. Hopefully it wont be years of agonizing cancer or some shit.

No meaning man. We're just the same as the insects, parasites, animals, bacteria, etc, etc that live on the organism as earth. We are literally here to make the earth function just like bacteria on your skin serves a function to the host. And most likely, the earth serves a function to the rest of the universe, and the universe probably serves a function to the thing thats bigger than that, and on and on it goes.

What were you before you were born? Were you feeling any crippling dread? No, but you're feeling it now for no reason, and you're invoking a healthy natural fear of death that helps us all survive. Stop worrying about death, op. We all share in this great "death" aspect to life. Remember this though, op... People die every day, but people are also born again. The sun sets every day, but then it rises again the next day. So don't worry about death, op. Worry more about life, and release yourself from your own mental prison. Live, op.

I don't fear death OP I grew up in pretty fucked up places in Europe

I don't want to die, but if i do I'll probably just accept my fate and be over with it.

My uncle once died and when he came back he cried because he saw "nothing but darkness, no heaven, no hell, no nothing"

This is why you should always do what you desire to do even if its frowned upon in society DO IT

and be good at it

i you were immortal life would be meaningless. Life is only precious because it is limited.

There is an unconfirmed story of a man who lived up to 257 years

Bo, we have not all the answers. In fact, we have many more questions than answers. Our knowledge of the life and universe is irredeemably small compared to the vastness of reality.
Believing in a deity is really your way to deal with uncertainties of the world? Believing that all that we cannot explain came to be because of the will of an anthropocentric deity? Does this really soothes your thirst and hunger?
If so, believe all you want. Have all the faith in the world. Otherwise... leave it all behind and don't look back. The world is what it is, anon. Our life is right here, right now. It's what we make of it, nothing more and nothing less.

This
When you die you are born
Roughly 30 years later.
And so on
That's why it feels like you been alive forever

You feel like you live forever when you do your heart's desire

Yes. I thought about killing myself today in fact. I only exist to please others currently and it would be selfish to take my self away from them. Soon as they die I'm going to probably set myself on fire or some shit in front of the Idaho Capitol building or something like that to protest Idaho being a shitty place to live.

Actually yes, as of quite recently, the thing is I'm to young to be worrying about this right now, yet I can't stop thinking about it. It's fearful cause you dont know what's next, are we reborn? In a new body or on a new world, do we go to heaven and live in the clouds or hell and burn in pain, does God give us our own world which is heaven to us, because all goes according to what we please? Or does he give us more chances to keep living? Or is there nothing darkness for ever. This question can be supplemented by this one >>693181292
What is life? Is our bodies just a carrier? Does it even matter if we get to be reborn again if we can't keep our memories? For all you know, you could have died a day or hour before you were reborn but you don't know cause your memories were left behind in the old body. But what helps me sleep at night is believing in God and that he has more planned for our contiousness or at least in technology. And that we are so close to being able to merge with machine and continue living in a new body. Take a look at this anon. http://2045.com We are not far. God and science welling, we may just live on, at least a little longer

THE REAL QUESTION IS DO WE LEAVE THIS UNIVERSE WHEN WE DIE? OTHERWISE WE CANT BE NOTHING BECAUSE THE UNIVERSE IS THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL THINGS AND THE IDEA OF NOTHING CANNOT EXIST INSIDE IT. THERE ALSO IS NO "YOU" YOU CANNOT LOCATE THAT IDENTITY YOU ASSOCIATE WITH, THERE IS NO EGO THE EGO IS A SPOOK. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE, THE UNIVERSE KNOWS WHATS ITS DOING BECAUSE IT IS THE UNIVERSE. DONT BE SCARED OF DEATH.
>>
>>693186938
When I seek immortality, I understand I won't be immune to death, at least not how I see immortality being reachable (synthetic body with brain transplant expected to be achievable in the next 40 years give or take). I understand if I fuck up hard enough I'll still die, or feel pain. But what I'm trying to avoid is the aging factor, that slow decend to a state were I might not be able to do half the shit I do now, that sensation thst a clock is ticking, if I kill myself that's my problem but I don't want my time to run out just cause randomness or whatever. I want time to see the future, to see space, new worlds. There is a universe of infinite possibilities and I want to see and experience all of that.

We are working on it right now http://2045.com and as for the other anon talking about over population, immortality is not for everyone, some people want to die in their own time and are happy to finally see the end. But in an event most of us want to live on, there is plenty of planets to do it on. As for our brains going bad. The answer to stopping that or slowing it down is in stem cells which has been proving to regenerate brain. Tissue. We might just see something close to immortality in our life time of not immortality itself (disclaimer a black hole or something similar in destruction could still kill you)
