Last year in Highs School there were 3 or 4 kids who joined the military the previous year and they all came back to say "hi" the next year.

Very oldfag can confirm. I grew up around many Nam vets who all told me if I went Army I was a fool. That's why I joined the Air Force. Most careers are spent in peacetime and Army standards are low because they've always needed bodies. That means you have some high speed bros and many slugs.

When I enlisted, my recruiter joked about sending low ASVAB scorers down the hall to Army and Navy. They were grateful for the meat. Fifteen years later my own peers were homesteading as recruiters and confirmed it's standard practice.

OP, don't forget you can SWITCH services after your first enlistment. Do da research and find something cool to crosstrain into. Twenty goes by fast then you can breathe a sigh of relief because dat beautiful retirement package is yours. Do a few more for the pay bumps then never work again, or go Federal, contract, or work for Lockheed etc.

Former USAF flightline maintainer here (PCSed and now I'm backshop). Down at the AMXS, I had to deal with fuckers taking every chance they could to mess with my personal belongings. While FOD prevention is to be taken seriously, I think it got out of hand when it was considered normal to look at someone's ABU top and say "I think I'm gonna freeze that in the freezer. That'll show them to leave their stuff lying around!!!" when you're STILL ON THE WORK SHIFT. CACs, EPs, backpacks, Camel Baks, you name it: nothing was safe.

The one time I fucked with someone else's shit, I get get yelled at because "this is going too far, you're gonna hurt their feelings." Literally, all I did was disassemble their EPs and safety wire it together. With one or two monster cotter keys for good measure. They had left them on the work truck the shift before!

Regardless, the alcoholic flightline maintenance culture there was so thick-skinned and twisted. Nobody had a sense of morale, so they made up for it with ruthlessness and disgust for each other.

Hits are rare and the deferred compensation package is well over a million bucks if you retire. Your retirement won't get destroyed by a recession like my civilian peers 401Ks.

Don't waste your retirement credit even if you split after one hitch. Plenty of State and Federal jobs credit military service towards retirement time in order to recruit veterans.

A good G.I. is devious, cunning, shrewd and superb at covering his ass. If your unit sucks, PCS is a fine remedy.

Little NATO hole-in-the-wall detachments still exist and defending Eurofags is fun and will remain so until the Dune Coons cuck them out of existence completely. I strongly recommend Europe to dark G.I.s. If your black ass doesn't get laid in Germany you must be allergic to pussy, and of course the food and beer are magnificent. Best deals are in tenant units on another branches base so you can be happily forgotten.

Another move is going Guard or Reserve after one Active hitch. Find a comfy hometown gig where you know all the people and you are human networked. You can also switch services if there's an opening and the gaining unit wants you. I did a full active AF career because it worked out well for me, but some of my bros made rank faster in Guard and Reserve units. The full time slot folks do especially well.
