You need to check your state laws on such firearms as well. If you live in places like California you may have greater state restrictions also you need to know the federal laws on such weapons. You can not transfer that weapon to any one that has not filed the paper work and payed the tax stamp this includes just handing it to some one to look at. Just to be sure you do know what an assault weapon is right? Because it is not an AR15.
