With a minimum of training with just a chainmain your skills aren't changed by much, and you can actually ignore any not super strong blow. Without a chainmail your opponent need just to touch you and you have huge injury.
I'm not suggesting a full armor set but that's probably even better, you can completely ignore any blow that's not going for your eyes, your neck or your feet. But then I would agree that it's really tiring.
