Im a muslim and I can tell you that. Stoning is only to be done if a married man or woman commits adultary AND there are four witnesses who can testify. Or if the person committing adultary confesses. It is a gruesome punishment but it's also hard to prove in islamic courts therefore it hasn't been done as much as other punishments. The reason why we do it is so that no married man or woman will take adultary which can tear apart whole families and leave children fatherless will be taken lightly. Furthermore the act of stoning expunges the sin so if they undergo punishment then they are free of that sin.
