i started in community radio as a volunteer sound tech and presenter as a teenager who fucked his end of highschool exams up. i volunteered for about 3 years, then i did a one year course in media production and was employed immediately afterwards hired by the station
i'm currently the head engineer and production coordinator(i basically make sure all the gear is maintained, source new gear when its needed, and set up special things for outside broadcasts and transmission rigging etc). the job pays my mortgage and i'm very well off. i've also rubbed shoulders with some of the most important people in my country due tomy involvement in community radio
not bad for a working class highschool failure
TLDR; absolutely get involved in community radio
