People tend to get this daydream going in their head of leaving it all behind and being rid of the bullshit -- living for yourself and everything you do is directly related to your well-being. Hell, my wife and I have talked extensively about hobby farming and similar lifestyles. The reality is, even though I work for someone else, I have a much much higher standard of living than I would in executing a plan like you describe. We vacation in very pretty areas,own land in several states, and don't have to worry incessantly about how we would cover a minor emergency. So:
1) I suggest you visit appropriate forums to learn more about the realities of tiny houses, hobby farming, off-grid life, etc.
2) what the hell happens if you get sick? No insurance = no care, unless you grift off the ER.
3) sick? Injured? If you don't work, you don't eat. Period.
4) do you know anything at all about raising veggies and livestock?
5) have you ever spent any real time in isolation? How did you handle it?
6) look into spending a year or two in SE Asia (Vietnam, Thai, Cambodia). See how you manage on that pension in a place that is much cheaper than the USA.
7) Have you considered moving back to Africa?

You can't afford enough land to really do that. At all. Not even close. Your best bet is to buy a little run down fixer upper house with a couple of acres out in the middle of nowhere so you can at least pretend you're off the grid.

The land all around yours won't be yours, but there are plenty of places where it's rural and the adjoining land is either federally owned or lumber land that hardly ever gets messed with but every 20 years or so to clear-cut and replant.

Chickens and a garden is fine, but you're probably a little delusional about the whole big farm thing. That takes a LOT of work, a LOT of money, and a LOT of time, of which you only have time and obviously not much fire under your ass about it to be asking 4chan instead of looking up land for sale.

to do what you imagine for real would take upfront costs of 6 figures in down payments for the land and equipment and supplies and animals, along with monthly mortgage for the land of several thousand a month.

So, rethink that. Instead focus on looking up properties you can afford with a little house and at least a few acres so you can live the dream - lite version. Virtually nothing you're describing is "off the grid" so stop calling it that. Having your own property on a budget of 1200/month is not going to happen, so take that dream and throw it in the trash. If you want to farm, find a farm that takes live-in farmhands so you can stay with them. If you want to be alone, budget yourself like a normal adult and find a rentable space worth 1/3 your monthly income. Pick one, you can't have both.

If you want to finance for your own property, you have to build credit, which means being a normal person and doing normal person things like leasing furniture on a loan from the bank so that they know you're capable of paying them back. For $1200 a month you can live a decent life, without needing to resort to farming. Look, you won't be living in luxury, but you'll be able to afford the essentials: internet, electricity, etc.
