The rights were not equal. I don't really agree with marriage in general, the entire concept was institutionalized by the church and is by and large a religious affair. Outside of the eyes of god or whatever marriage is almost pointless. No, our rights were equal. There are three reasons to be married

If a certain demographic is allowed a 'marriage equivalent' that doesn't meet all three, while the rest of the world just gets married, then there is an inequality. Even if the difference is just that gay people aren't allowed to call it 'married' but everything else is equal to a straight couple there is inequality.

These two things are not interchangeable. A gay man had the same rights as a straight man, in the sense that they were both allowed to marry a woman. That is not equality, that's a totalitarian state regulating people to be a certain way under penalty of law.
Gay men and straight men had the SAME rights, but if they had had EQUAL rights then they would both have been allowed to marry anyone, whether male or female. And until the supreme court ruling just recently this EQUALITY was still not respected. Like fuck, until 2003 gay guys could be arrested in like a dozen states just for having sex with their partner.
I'm gonna say this part again because I feel like you maybe missed it before. If one group is allowed to be "married" while the other group is allowed every single benefit of being married, but they have to call it something else, then the two groups aren't equal, and don't have equal rights. It's not until they can have the same things the same ways that they are equal.
Once again, Equal does NOT mean identical. You don't have to be the same to be equal, and I know this sounds contradictory to what I just said in the last paragraph but it isn't. In the example of the 50's (Which I have no idea how you could actually think that was a good defense to say equality was already present,) the straight men can marry women and the gay men can marry women, but the point that matters is whether they want to marry women, and surely the gay man does not. He wants to marry a man, but he is not allowed. THAT is inequality. The fact that one person can do something, while another can't do the same thing in the way that's right for them. It's not about having the same rights as someone, it's about having the rights that actually apply to you AND having the same rights as someone.

You misunderstand what totalitarianism is. Nobody was PROSECUTED for marrying the same gender in America. All that happened was that the government didn't recognize the marriage. That's not totalitarian on any level. Okay so apparently you don't understand equality OR metaphor.
It's like everything is going over your head. I figured that after saying all that I said before you would understand that by proxy it also means "not government recognized" is the same as "not equal"
Nobody has the right to marry a dog, therefore we are equally denied a right. So in a sense it isn't inequality. (Being allowed to marry a human female while not being allowed to marry a human male is decidedly different than not being allowed to marry inter-species.)
But, in another aspect it is inequality, because zoophilia is a legitimate sexual/romantic orientation. That being said (and it should also be noted that I am a zoophile myself) there are reasons for this zoophile 'inequality' -- first and foremost being that sex with animals is dangerous for both the human and the animal. Then there is the ambiguity of consent. While an animal can consent, they can't admit to having consented. Not to mention the fact that marrying an animal has even less point than marrying a person. (Practically speaking, that is.)

It's not different from your arbitrary standpoint of equality. A heterosexual marriage was a contract the government recognized; a homosexual marriage was one it did not. In the same way, you can put a ring on your dog but the government won't recognize that as marriage. This is ACTUALLY the same thing, because it has nothing to do with "rights" since government marriage is not a negative liberty, it's a privilege the government has bestowed on you.
I don't feel like talking about zoophilia, it's irrelevant to the point. The purpose of this discussion is marriage as a contract between individuals and the government.
