>Formalizing sexual licentiousness
We aren't talking about the removal of sodomy laws, we're talking about being one of the first states to actively put the effort into making something happen which effects a large percent of our population. We're talking about granting the same rights to all peoples regardless of skin, creed, and so on.

The rights were not equal. I don't really agree with marriage in general, the entire concept was institutionalized by the church and is by and large a religious affair. Outside of the eyes of god or whatever marriage is almost pointless. However, the fact that there was ever a difference where all the rights would be recognized but "you have to pretend you're not actually married cause you're actually not," is purely segregative and bigoted. The concept of separating these two things that are nearly identical and allowing certain people the right to either while certain other people have the right to only one is the schema of hate and division among fellow men

You most likely are. Overconfidence is easily curbed by failure and a week or two without access to one's genitals.

>>687982720
No, our rights were equal. There was nothing preventing gays from getting married either to, you know, the opposite sex, or to each other in non-governmental ceremonies and displaying their affection publicly (we have the first amendment, after all). No, the fight for marriage "equality" was token at best and really was just the efforts of a fringe lobby to get the government to recognize their interests for the sake of petty victory. Winning it in the supreme court has accomplished nothing except making a handful of fags feel validated by the government. I, for one, think we were better in as a population in the closet.

I'd give it back after you admitted defeat, I'm not a monster.
>>687983847

>>687983318
There are three reasons to be married
1)To be united as one in the eyes of the Lord (or other celestial beings)
2)To be united as one in the eyes of the Government
3)To be united as one in the eyes of your peers (including yourself)
If a certain demographic is allowed a 'marriage equivalent' that doesn't meet all three, while the rest of the world just gets married, then there is an inequality. Even if the difference is just that gay people aren't allowed to call it 'married' but everything else is equal to a straight couple there is inequality.
The fact that you keep saying gay rights were equal says to me that you don't actually understand the movement. That or you don't understand the word equal.

>>687984126
Oh, I see. Rather different issue since melee is popular DESPITE no developer support.
>>687984142
Not much, really. Wavedashing was intended, but wasn't understood to be as powerful as it was. Almost everything fox and falco can do, for example, was entirely deliberate. The question is only of how far they could take those capabilities.

>>687984743
wouldn't be a 9 hours drive if you could drive as fast as you wanted
>>687984817
No, I know exactly what it means. I'm telling you that a gay relationship is never going to be equal to a straight one, but that gay individuals had the same rights as straight ones prior to obergefell. This is distinct from something like woman's suffrage, where women objectively did not have the rights men did. A gay man and a straight man in the 1950s had the exact same rights.
>>687984817
I understand that.I guess I feel the same.

>same rights
>equal rights
These two things are not interchangeable. A gay man had the same rights as a straight man, in the sense that they were both allowed to marry a woman. That is not equality, that's a totalitarian state regulating people to be a certain way under penalty of law.
Gay men and straight men had the SAME rights, but if they had had EQUAL rights then they would both have been allowed to marry anyone, whether male or female. And until the supreme court ruling just recently this EQUALITY was still not respected. Like fuck, until 2003 gay guys could be arrested in like a dozen states just for having sex with their partner.
I'm gonna say this part again because I feel like you maybe missed it before. If one group is allowed to be "married" while the other group is allowed every single benefit of being married, but they have to call it something else, then the two groups aren't equal, and don't have equal rights. It's not until they can have the same things the same ways that they are equal.
Once again, Equal does NOT mean identical. You don't have to be the same to be equal, and I know this sounds contradictory to what I just said in the last paragraph but it isn't. In the example of the 50's (Which I have no idea how you could actually think that was a good defense to say equality was already present,) the straight men can marry women and the gay men can marry women, but the point that matters is whether they want to marry women, and surely the gay man does not. He wants to marry a man, but he is not allowed. THAT is inequality. The fact that one person can do something, while another can't do the same thing in the way that's right for them. It's not about having the same rights as someone, it's about having the rights that actually apply to you AND having the same rights as someone.

You misunderstand what totalitarianism is. Nobody was PROSECUTED for marrying the same gender in America. All that happened was that the government didn't recognize the marriage. That's not totalitarian on any level. Marriage as a government-recognized contract was only extended to heterosexual couples, but it's no more totalitarian to limit that service to heterosexual couples than it is totalitarian to give tax breaks to charitable organizations.
I'm not going to disagree with you that sodomy laws were horrendous. After lawrence.
And gays could call what they were, married. It was just not government recognized. That doesn't matter. And by your logic, incidentally, it is an inequality that you're not permitted to marry a dog. An inequality it may be, but it's irrelevant, because the government has no reason to recognize your marriage to a dog, just as it had no reason to recognize your marriage to a man.

Okay so apparently you don't understand equality OR metaphor.
It's like everything is going over your head. I figured that after saying all that I said before you would understand that by proxy it also means "not government recognized" is the same as "not equal"
Nobody has the right to marry a dog, therefore we are equally denied a right. So in a sense it isn't inequality. (Being allowed to marry a human female while not being allowed to marry a human male is decidedly different than not being allowed to marry inter-species.)
But, in another aspect it is inequality, because zoophilia is a legitimate sexual/romantic orientation. That being said (and it should also be noted that I am a zoophile myself) there are reasons for this zoophile 'inequality' -- first and foremost being that sex with animals is dangerous for both the human and the animal. Then there is the ambiguity of consent. While an animal can consent, they can't admit to having consented. Not to mention the fact that marrying an animal has even less point than marrying a person. (Practically speaking, that is.)
>>687988943
Glad to.
>>687989094
Damn, Well am i doing a good job at terrifying you?
>>687989109
That's not metaphor, that's hyperbole, bordering on lying. Lack of government recognition is never totalitarian, it is only totalitarian when the government forces you to act a certain way.
>Nobody has the right to marry a dog, therefore we are equally denied a right. So in a sense it isn't inequality. (Being allowed to marry a human female while not being allowed to marry a human male is decidedly different than not being allowed to marry inter-species.)
It's not different from your arbitrary standpoint of equality. A heterosexual marriage was a contract the government recognized; a homosexual marriage was one it did not. In the same way, you can put a ring on your dog but the government won't recognize that as marriage. This is ACTUALLY the same thing, because it has nothing to do with "rights" since government marriage is not a negative liberty, it's a privilege the government has bestowed on you.
I don't feel like talking about zoophilia, it's irrelevant to the point. The purpose of this discussion is marriage as a contract between individuals and the government.
