OP here, they work but nothing compares to a glass bong. I'm 19, so you could definitely get one like I have. But if you wanna make a homemae bong, get a waterbottle, take the cap off and burn a hole on the side, get the outside of a pen (basically the shell of it, so it's hollow) and put a socket over the end with a nug in it. If you grind your weed, you can get the little screen on a pair of ear buds (The part that goes into your ear) and put it in the socket so the smoke can go through without pulling your weed through. OR you could buy a 10 dollar pipe at a glass shop.

Ay muchachos, guy who smokes about 1 joint/day in general here. I was thinking about smoking a bit less in general because of no moniez, but on the other side i enjoy it to really get stoned. so i was thinking about getting a bong (i do have a small pipe). What you should do is buy a bong with a little bowl, and just force yourself to smoke 1-2 bowls a day. That's about a joint worth, maybe a little less. When I'm tight on money I do that with my other bong. The one I posted in the original post is my fancy 200 dollar bong that I use when I have enough weed. But I blow through this shit fast, about an ounce in a week and a half.
