I'm going to ignore the existence of Heroes of Newerth for simplicity's sake
When Dota started falling behind in terms of graphics, quality of life stuff like skins and customization and the menu usage and shit league basically filled that spot. It was Dota but polished and "better". A lot of the dota players switched over including myself. At the start it was amazing, no rules and people just playing how they want. Over time though the community just degraded because of several reasons. Riot is amazing at marketing. "Play for Free!" on a lot of websites and the big boobed chicks all over the place attracted a crowd and it ended up being the wrong crowd. Basically you have people like Yuuki and others who actually play the game for fun and enjoyment and then you have these absolute tryhards that follow the professional streamers, copy everything they do and then blame the team when it doesnt work.
Riot was spammed by so many reports of people calling their teammates shit that they added a dummy report called Unskilled Player which doesn't actually do anything but helps tone down the pointless reports. I stopped playing around Season 4 because of just how shit both the game and community was. I played again and the solo queue non-draft mode is still just as cancerous as it was. Everyone picking their favourite assassin/damage dealer hero and blaming the team when their aggressive plays go wrong.
As for gameplay, the issue is only with something called "ability power". In Dota, abilities do a flat amount of damage so buying item didn't increase it. "Supports" are generally those that don't accquire gold and instead cover teammates with crowd control and damage spells. In League, ability power adds a percentage of said power onto your spells, which means the base damage of the spell has to be lowered so they remain balanced.

This ends up making supports weak non-damage dealers which most people don't enjoy playing. They've changed that now but last time I played the mentality hasn't changed. "I'm not good at support, you pick it" "Sorry I don't play support" and you end up with a team that has no supports and not enough gold to go around.
The reason this happens is because league has become a meta game. One top laner, one jungler, one marksman, one support, one mid laner. Ignoring this meta ends up with your team most likely losing, especially at higher levels of play. The items, the heroes, the game is being designed around this meta. It makes it very stale.
This gameplay, combined with the overall just shitty community of 14 year olds attracted by the assassin fantasy, flashy colors and big tits makes it overall shitty unless you do like Akiko and Homura. I.e. Play with friends just to have fun.
Dota 2 is fun but only if you don't mind spending a full hour on every game and being chill while you play because otherwise you're going to end up angrier when you come out than when you went in.
I only play heroes of the storm now, it removes the laning phase and skips straight ot the fun, it also lets you pick whatever you want to play before you meet your team. Casual game is actually casual, no stress, just fun. It's simpler but just more enjoyable overall.

Alright, when it comes to how supports are played, thats a matter mainly of what moba you are playing. Smite supports are different to league supports because they are all really tank initiators but they vary from each other in what they do such as aoe lategame teamfights, or big damaging early game teamfighters, or even a couple of pick supports. League has very few of those options, and naturally in every game nobody likes support except for me and 3 other guys because we decided to main support and hate ourselves. The formula you talk about is just inherently a part of every moba. Its a guideline nowadays to what makes it a moba, so idk about that man. Also every community is cancerous, just some more than others.

no no desu. It may be the best option to follow the formula, but it's not always enforced like it is in league. Also most people are classifying moba wrong. Dota-like game is what I would call it as there are plenty moba without creeps going through lanes to a core. Thats fair, smite was really good about that too. There would be legit every single roles characters played in the top/solo lane (whatever you call it), the only role that didnt happen was adc. You legit would have a support solo, a jungler mid, a mage jungle, a mage support and an adc. It was pretty coolio. No offense but Heroes just seemed too dumbed down for me to be interested in, but because i see it that way its also a really good casual game.
