Depending on where you are invaders can also be friendly or hostile. Some choose to invade you, some covenants simply summons them to either help you or attack you.
Normally you can distinguish the phantoms by their colours, but some rings let them alter their colour, so try to lock them on. If you can lock on them, they're hostile. If not, they're here to help you.
