Holy shit, that is crazy accurate. I've observed this (and am not proud to admit that a couple of times as early high school when I was a beta this was me). Where the girl isn't particularly attractive, but she's 'accessible' (she's into the same autistic shit the guys are like anime, video games, etc.). If you absolutely need an idiom, "an uphill battle" is widely used. Some other idioms that come close: "against all odds"; "easier said than done"; "fight a losing battle" and "go in over your head".

We don't have an exact match to that saying in English. If a bunch of guys were all after the same girl you could say they were drawn to her like a moth to a flame. That's an expression in English, but it doesn't necessarily convey that the guys seem desperate.

Someone else already suggested "sausage party," an event with too many guys not enough girls.

Another English expression is "too many cooks" as in too many cooks spoil the pot. Too many people involved ruins things.

Or "two's company, there's a crowd" meaning there is an extra person hanging around who should leave.

Another one that might be useful would be to call the girl "the bell of the ball," meaning she's the popular girl at the party.

From what I see around me, this is pretty common with males. I don't see groups of girls taking turns flirting with the same guy.

Now, desperate guys are the worse. Whenever I see myself on a potential situation like that, I lose all my interest in the girl and let the "seven dogs" chase their "single bone".
