I absolutely loved it. They had terps from there side eventually after working with the same guys for so long we all kind of,picked up things for the most part. Knowing extra languages actually gets you more pay. Take a test blah blah pass and get more pay. I got a extra $300 a month because I can speak creole French, and another $150 for being able to speak French in general. Im from southern Louisiana. This is true. There was a lot going on in my life during that time. I was nearly finished with my undergraduate degree in secondary English education, but I wasn't sure that it was what I wanted to do. A lot of my friends were signing up and I wasn't sure if it was something I should look into. In the end, I decided that teaching really was what I wanted to do.

Look, it's not that I think joining the military is a stupid idea for everyone. Hell, some of my students end up going into the military and do really well for themselves. It can be a really good thing for some people.

It just irks me beyond all belief that some soldiers feel this sense of entitlement, as though they've taken on some great noble cause -- a calling -- to serve one's country selflessly and heroically and that we should all be forever in their debt, should forever thank them and praise them.

But at the end of the day, it's a job. It's a job that one has chosen and is paid for, and while it may be dangerous for those who actually see combat, I don't feel that I owe a soldier anything -- not even a thanks. I've thanked soldiers before, but don't expect it -- and I feel like many do. Like, what the fuck?

When you leave all your friends and family, enlist in the military, get sent overseas and risk your life for a noble, worthwhile cause and do all of that FOR FREE -- then I'll be impressed and give you a thousand kudos and thanks. Until then, take your military pay, healthcare, free college and military discounts and don't expect anything more from me or anyone else.
