My view is a little colored, since I played literally from launch, and it was a buggy mess. My first memory of WoW was dancing in the Tauren starting area with everyone else because the lag was so bad that you couldn't do anything, and when you tried, looting nodes and mobs had a decent chance of crashing the game. I had to wait a while before I really started playing.

Nothing is new or fresh anymore. No excitement, so that's why they say vanilla was better. It's not that the game state itself was better, which some might debate, but the time playing during vanilla was better.

I'd agree, but things like the legacy servers and the way most people talk about it, it is people saying the game was a better state than it is now.
That feeling is gone now, MMOs are too jaded to bring back that sense of excitement and freshness, and there's really noone to blame but the players. The idea that the endgame is where the real game starts needs to die a horrible death. I know that's what killed Wildstar.
