I grew up in a post-soviet country, and the only reason I'm not a communist is because I'm not in a communist country. That being said, there are some things from the communist culture I still carry with me.

Communism teaches you to feel community deeply and to be practical. I lived in a poor country in the southern caucus. We always had food and shelter, and in return, the government gave us the jobs they needed and we cared for each other. I was going to be an engineer because that's what my dad was and that's what the government wanted me to do. Since coming to America, I found a passion for medicine and am starting medical school in August - I couldn't do that back home, but there are drawbacks.

I live in California now, and one thing I hate about American and capitalist culture is the "me-first" mentality. Kids don't spend holidays with their parents, parents want kids to move out as soon as they are fiscally able to. People going into bullshit jobs that don't produce equity or benefit the economy. The idea of start-up companies working just to get bought out, and the general cannibalistic nature of the economy. This shit doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not saying communism is better, people weren't happy, but they were content usually. I guess I'm a capitalist now since I live in America, but there are some community values I will always keep that were passed down to me from the soviet mentality.

I never said anything about Trump. Bit since you mentioned it, I do agree with several of his positions. One of them being to curb the H1 visas that corporations are exploiting for cheap, technical labor. Yes and no. My fond memories of back home and the nationalism I feel is very much like America and how it is portrayed here. Patriotism is good, our economy is strong, we are the greater good trying to eradicate the evils in the world, and don't forget - we keep you safe. This can be said for any country, but especially for both the US and Russia.

I'd also say yes because sometimes you need to feel like you belong to something bigger than yourself to be empowered. Again, this sort of alignment can be seen in patriots of any country.
