How do you pronounce it, /b/?
>>
The creators of the image format pronounce it "jif."

I don't know how anyone can argue for any other pronunciation.
>>
>>680882327
gift with a silent t
asked an english professor and said thats how you say it. dont give a shit if the creator thinks he made peanut butter
>>
>>680882544
it starts with a g, so i say it was 'grr'.

And yes I know there a lot of words in english spelt with a g that sound like j, but i have problems with those as well....like german, should be jerman
>>
>>680882544
The creator was a programmer not an English major so yeah that's how you can argue for a different pronunciation
>>
>>680883006
It starts with a g but it's not a word, you fucking autist, it's an acronym.

Not only that, no, "German" should no be "jerman", g is an elastic character.

That's a pretty piss poor argument in and of itself. You don't need to be a certified _____ to name whatever you create. He created the format, he named it, then applied the acronym "gif".
>>
I say it with a hard G, even though I know that's not correct. I have a friend that pronounces it correctly and, yet, we never seem to have trouble understanding eachother.
I guess we're the lucky ones.

>>680883080

You're all fucking retarded.

English allows two completely valid pronunciations of the letter g.

The creators of the format decided which would be used, and they went with the j sound.

The creators of the format get to do that.

You don't go to McDonald's and demand a "Big Mas" because you decided McDonald's chose the wrong pronunciation of c.

False analogy, the creator still followed the basic rules of the English language, a "g" can be pronounced like a "j", such as "Giraffe"

why would there be a correct pronunciation? who decided which is correct?

the idea of a correct pronunciation implies there was some kind of central design to a language's development, which - in the case of english - is not true.

Ask the person with the masters degree in the english language if it *could* be pronounced like "jif"

If he has a brain he will say yea, theoretically that could be a correct pronunciation.

Then point out that the creator intended that to be the pronunciation.

More than likely your english professor isn't aware the creator intended it to be pronounced like "Jif" and just says it the way he's always heard it. His degree doesn't mean shit here, because we are arguing between two correct ways to pronounce a word, one being more popular and the other being the intended usage.

>>
>>680885888

But of course there is a correct pronunciation, communication would be impossible otherwise.

If you're speaking english every word you mean to say has to sound at least vaguely similar to the way it's spelled according to the rules of the english language, otherwise it is impossible to communicate with people.

Accents and general ignorance have changed the pronunciation of some words slightly (For example, the American pronunciation of "Aluminium"), but people can still understand what they are conveying because the word follows basic phonetic structure.

But if you could pronounce any word any way you wanted then nobody would have a fucking clue what anybody was talking about 100% of the time.

> the idea of a correct pronunciation implies there was some kind of central design to a language's development

No, it just implies there are certain rules to the language, which in the case of english is true.

>communication would be impossible otherwise
the fact that people can say gif and jif and discuss it proves this wrong.

>every word you say has to sound at least vaguely similar
to what though? it really depends on who you're talking to

>accents and ignorance...phonetic structure

take a linguistics class. "basic phonetic structure" what does this mean?
there is an idea in linguistics of an atomic piece of a word: ie pr-aw-gress and pr-oh-gress being understood by virtually all english speakers as the same word but st-ee-l and st-oo-l being understood as having very different meanings

>if you could pronounce any word any way you wanted...

you can and people choose to pronounce things so that other people can understand them. the maxim here is that all parties communicating are trying to understand each other as best as possible

>implies there are certain rules to the language

there are "rules" but that doesn't refute my point that the existence of a correct pronunciation implies a design

>>
>>680887608

> the fact that people can say gif and jif and discuss it proves this wrong.

No, it proves my point that as long as your pronunciation follows basic phonetic rules we can understand what you meant.

You couldn't pronounce it "kugsalkjsbavll" and expect anyone to follow, so obviously there is a right and wrong way of saying it.

> there are "rules" but that doesn't refute my point that the existence of a correct pronunciation implies a design

Yes it does, the pronunciation of words come from the rules of English.

Eg: Words are spelled a certain way following the rules of English (Even if the rules are a little strange sometimes), and then when you read the word you can sound it out, and even if you pronounce it wrong people can understand what you meant because you said it the way it's spelled.

There is obviously a right and wrong way to say a word, because communication is impossible otherwise, that is irrefutable. I'm just that we can still understand what you're saying if you make little errors, but you can't just say any word any way you want and expect people to follow.

We understand what you mean by "gif" because looking at the spelling of the word we can see how you would come to that pronunciation even though it's "jif", if you said it "howzat" you couldn't argue "Well there really is no proper way to pronounce a word" unless you're clinically retarded.

gif, progress, and tomato are pretty tame examples. what about every and erry, or store vs sto. they are all different yet nearly always mutually intelligible.

>there is obviously a right and wrong way to say a word...that is irrefutable

That's not a phonetics argument it's an etymological one. Phonetically it's perfectly acceptable to have a hard g before i, it depends on the descent of the word to decide which sound it gets.

Etymologically .gif comes from some computer nerds who made objectively the wrong decision about the way it should be pronounced, so the correct way is [gɪf], not [dʒɪf]
>>
>>680896463
because the creator says hard g and it stands for graphics which has a hard g but 99% of people say jif like the peanut butter

>grammar rules

What on Earth are you talking about, whichever side of the argument you're on this has literally nothing to do with "grammar rules" whatsoever. Phonotactically either way is permissible in English. Etymologically the creator is a deviant who prefers "jiff" but as this thread has already proved, all well adjusted people say "gif."
>>
>>680894992
Acronyms deviate from the pronunciation of the first letters of the words that make them all the time. In POTUS, you don't pronounce it as "Ohf" or "Uhnited". In .mpeg, you don't pronounce "Moving" with a hard M. And in .gif, you don't pronounce it as "Jraphics".

But the acronyms are pronounced like that anyways, and they work. It's not like you're confused when someone pronounces it as jif.

C needs an e after it to be pronounced like an s.
Make up words and see how they sound in comparison.
would you pronounce
"Gap" "jap?"
"God" "jod?"
"Gun" "jun?"
GIF like "jif" just sounds unintuitive. Plus it helps to make perfectly clear the spelling. If you pronounce it like "jif" the spelling becomes ambiguous when there is no obvious text. Checkmate atheists.

Anyone who opposes the true way of saying .gif (/ˈdʒɪf/ jif) is wrong.
Anyone who uses these arguments as proof is wrong:
>it's gift without the t.
Gift is its own word. There is no relation.

>the creator was NOT an English major, so he doesn't know anything about how to pronounce English words.
Then you can no longer name your child and declare the correct pronunciation if its ambiguous, like Anna (Ah-nna), etc.

>Name any other word that has a 'j' sound as a g.

Gin
Giraffe
Giant
.gif

>its not peanut butter #jif
it isn't fucking peanut butter you lard asses.
and it's "jiff"

The only real argument for this case is the
acronym argument:
.gif stands for Graphics Interchange Format
and you are correct in the regards that it's
Graphics.

you are so fucking retarded you aren't allowed
