I have sort of a musical hierarchy so other instruments can sometimes do something to an extent. Tubas and sousaphones reign supreme at the top, but aspects of some instruments are enjoyable like I enjoy the sound of the bassoon or the look of the bagpipes. In terms of the instrument as a whole though, nothing can compete with the tuba.

The only thing that really happened when I was younger was my parents arguing and getting a divorce but everyone else was pretty excluded from that and it was at around age 17 for me. Tubas are kind of like Pianos. Nice, new pianos -- very expensive. Old, beat up, not great looking pianos nobody wants them. Check craigslist, call up a few music stores. You can get a good, playable tuba in the $200-400 range EASY.

I do, however, have to shoot down one part of your fetish a little bit. Tubas don't actually take that much wind to play them, and play them well. When you want to get LOUD it takes a lot of air, but most strangely, tubas take less air to play than a flute, which makes sense if you think about it actually. They do take a bit more gusto than the trumpet, but it really isn't terribly hard. You don't really "BLOW" into the thing,

I don't own any at this time, but I want to buy an old US ARMY marching tuba, or the like. They were made by reputable manufacturers but have a mild brass finish that few people go ga-ga over anymore, and are a bit on the heavy side, but they have a great tone.

My favorite sit-down style of tuba are the KING Bell-front or 'belfront' tuba styles, they hold their tune very well and have beautiful tone. Part of the reason I became first chair in High school was because I had the oldest, ugliest tuba of the bunch, but it was a King Belfront, and when it came to making the music... the new Yamaha tubas we had just couldn't cut it.

Unfortunately, they are scarce.

They are great instruments. To fit your price range, I'd look used but i never recommend buying used without trying it first. Tubas are so expensive that plane tickets become worth it for a good purchase

A fiberglass tuba will always have a hollow and 'woody' tone that brass simply does not have. They are okay for blatting about during football games but that's about it. Any serious marching band uses brass, any serious band uses brass. I think, unfortunately, that learning on fiberglass trains people to be worse musicians in the tuba arts, because they learn to be more 'blatt-y' and don't teach themselves the finesse of the instrument, they don't learn how to make it sing.
