what does /b/ think about nuclear power?

Retards who are fed misinformation and rely on anecdotes for their opinions hinders its progress and stifle its incredible potential.

>>
>>676527806
The first gen reactors should be monitored more carefully, mostly because they're so old by now. We need to start building more though, with the newest technologies we could reduce our wastes by quite a lot. It will take too long for solar and wind to catch up if we're serious about reducing fossil fuel emissions
>>
Of all the power producing methods, yeah highest output for the lowest cost with very little immediate environmental impact. However, the possibility for massive failure due to human error (see Chernobyl) or unforeseen circumstances (see Fukushima Daiichi) and the horrible effects of these situations, adding in the already problematic issue of waste material, renewable energy is the way to go.

In Finland we have massive mine that goes very deep into permamen rock which has storage areas for nuclear waste. It's still just "hiding" that dangerous stuff, but it has been designed to last long enough for that material to lose it's radioactivity.

renewables cant satisfy base load requirements for the grid.
solar is on and off. wind is on and off. wave is on almost all the time but its extremely expensive and isnt scalable enough fot base load.
it is almost impossible for renewables to be used exclusively due to grid issues. coal and nuclear will always be with us.

>>
>>676528283
Wy don't we put it to chernobyl I mean it's already the most radioactivest place
>>
>>676529399
but you can't rely for a 100% on renewable sources. Our need for energy is too high, capturing and saving renewable energy resources are too inefficient
>>
>>676527806
Its one of the most under used and misinterpreted sources of power on this planet, and more research needs to be looked into being able to burn the waste we have as fuel rather then the U-238. If found out, we could have clean power for 100s of years.

Most peoples fear of it, is based off misinformation and or bad examples of reactors and bad reactor safety.
>>
>>676528959
what do you mean by "lack of funding"? It's more like investing to upgrade means that nuclear isn't that cheap after all.
>>
>>676528070

"always" is a bit bold. They will stay for some time, but renewable energy is the right way to go. (Not counting in nuclear fusion or anything else that's still theoretical)

What we need is a better way to store and transport energy.
>>
So I agree that most people fear of nuclear power plants exploding or what not is primarily based off of misinformation and a few bad examples.

But given that we're human, we're alway going to fuck up. People are going to get lazy, or corrupt, or just not care, and eventually something is going to go terribly wrong. Even in a country like Japan, which isn't know for lax standards or cutting corners.

There is no way to ensure that these makes won't happen. They will. Given the catastrophic nature of these disasters, how are we to balance this risk?
>>
>>676529925
It's also awesome to fuck.

Microwave a block of swiss for 20 seconds or so, and fuck it. You'll thank me later.
>>
>renewable energy / solar

crap. you people understand how much energy and pollution goes into making solar panels?

but that is on chinas carbon record so its ok right?

just because the energy budget is entirely used up before a kW is generated doesnt mean you can ignore it. solar (and wind turbines) is the biggest con job on the planet and not any better than than the dirty coal which is used to manufacture them.

not to mention the complete uselessness at night or during peak usage, requiring the grid to have dirty coal backups anyway.
>>
>>676527806
very good and relatively green way of creating electricity. Its just important to keep them up to date or close them down when the time comes (ie. state regulation on lifetime should be in place so that insecure plants get shut down)

this is one of the major points - calling the engineers dumb or short-sighted for not planning for tsunamis is misleading. I'm sure they did consider it, but in the end someone has to PAY for countermeasures. Planning for this and that will lead to higher construction and maintenance costs, rendering nuclear energy MORE costly than other forms of energy.
>>
>>676529978
>and or bad examples of reactors and bad reactor safety
the ruskies didn't know/care about how the plant was supposed to operate. Yes, bad shit does happen in nuclear power, but it's rare and due almost entirely to operator error. Train your people right and you've got a safe and efficient power source

Nuclear power - very difficult to maintain, and very dangerous not on in its operation, but in the waste produced by them. This waste remains radio active for 500 + years, and has to be disposed of, so this makes the whole thing a very bad idea.

Coal power - very dirty, and one of the highest contributors to pollution around the world. A very bad idea.

Hydroelectric power - highly disruptive of the natural Eco-system, and disruptive of species of fish like salmon who need to freely navigate the waterways to get to their spawning grounds. A very bad idea.

Natural Gas - Source of pollutants and high carbon emissions, and generally bad for the environment. Bad idea.

Solar power - very efficient, and free power source. Exceptionally clean and easy to maintain. Great idea

Wind power - very low cost of maintenance and free power source. Very good idea.

There you have it boys. Wind & Solar are the only real options that are not destructive to the planet.

You choose the only two types of power that aren't efficient, as in producing maximum electricity for its overall impact, size, etc.

Hydro electric is great, and is clean, you are a faggot, and want wind and solar. Neither of these forms is efficient, and you need to literally destroy 100s of acres of land to deploy them, whereas a much smaller nuclear, coal, or gas plant could produce the same amount of power without all of the land rape.

In 20 years when wind power is realized to be the joke that it is, who is going to pay to take down all of the ugly eye sore windmills that are rusting across the landscape? Who will tear down and clean up all of those useless solar panels?

You are a faggot!

Nuclear is fucking magical energy technology humans invented that's being held back by Luddites because of misinformation.

Solar and wind are jokes and are only good as supplemental power. They will never be able to supply enough to be the primary source.

Where I live, the nuclear plants are all old as fuck and need lots of maintenance and they've shut down a couple of old ones. Meanwhile, the government is buying up prime farmland and covering it with solar panels (that, according to the farmers, deteriorate the soil due to all the wiring and electrical shit) just to satisfy some fucking luddite environmentalists.

It's absurd. Yes, destroy land that we need to fucking grow food with a useless power source, while letting a fucking amazing power source go to shit just because "muh Chernobyl"

i run an 80mw CHP with a gas fired turbine and HRSG. its not nuclear but the principles are the same. all of the turbine exhaust steam is condensed in a closed loop via 3 LP steam customers and returned to the boiler. the redundancy should the customers not require steam is an air blast dump condenser. ofcourse the issue is scalability which is why nuclear CTs are so vast but you could definitely improve the need for permanent and vast CTs.

its not conventional but it is possible. the latent heat of even LP steam still has a massive amount of energy in it. you could use a mechanical vapour recompression system or a suitable refrigerant loop to then boil water at atmospheric pressure. TBH i don't quite know the pressure exiting a nuclear turbine but if its anything greater that around 0.6bara it can be put to a lot of uses. domestic water heating comes to mind

Solar panels have improved, but not enough , I grant you. However, there is not nearly the effort put toward solar as compared to computer tech. Also, How often do you replace that precious 'puter of yours? Current solar panels last for 25 years or more. Input wastes are much higher on your fapping machine.

>Nuclear is fucking magical energy technology humans invented that's being held back by Luddites because of misinformation.
This is pretty much true. Generating energy through nuclear is at least as cheap as generating it through fossil fuels, and on the whole much cleaner. Depending on the type of reactor we use, we could make our currently attainable reserves of fissible material last tens of thousands of years (or if we're stupid we could burn through them in a hundred, but whatever). Anti-nuclear sentiment really is just reactionary backlash.

>Solar and wind are jokes and are only good as supplemental power.
This is just a meme. The cost to produce energy through solar and wind either already is or will be very soon (depending on the estimate you like) competitive with fossil fuels/nuclear. There's been a staggering technological revolution in the field this past decade, and there's a similar tech boom happening in the field of energy storage as we speak. The future is now, etc, etc.

>Yes, destroy land that we need to fucking grow food with a useless power source
... There is no food shortage, and there isn't projected to be one basically ever. The world produces an absolutely insane abundance of food. If you're worried about food, solar is better than fossil fuels by mile. The land they use isn't actually a significant issue, and climate change could potentially collapse of agricultural centers across the world through changes in rain patterns.

Ultimately, by 2025 we should be in a position to transition - almost costlessly - to technologies like solar and wind. Fossil fuels are almost obsolete as a power source simply because of technological progress. Now, we probably won't make that transition, because those companies own enough pet senators to rig the market and demand to be kept on life support.

>>
>>676536121

Isolating large amounts of hydrogen uses more energy than it yields and i'm not sure that will ever change.
>>
>>676532805

This is the most retarded post in the thread.

Wind and solar efficient? These are sources of energy that are stopped by fucking windless days and cloud cover, and they require tons of effort for very little return. They are the exact opposite of efficient.

Sure, I'd stimulate wind and solar. On an individual basis. If I were the state, I'd reimburse people who want to use these types of energy as individuals, because that's the most efficient. They are in control of their own power. But to shoehorn them into a powergrid that lives and dies by steady supply and demand is RETARDED.

In Britain, they need extra power output at 16:00, because that's tea time. That's the sort of system you would deliver to the whims of mother nature.

Just because they're a thing doesn't mean that we still don't burn fossil fuels to make pure hydrogen, making them completely inefficient.

Even electric cars that run from cleanly produced electricity still leave a large carbon footprint to be manufactured.

>we can't use nuclear power because muslims will want to blow it up

This is the single worst argument I've ever heard against nuclear power. Granted, I'm already anti-immigration, but that just proves the point: Why the fuck should we ever let the future of the fucking planet depend on bleeding heart idiots insisting we let the entire islamic world run roughshod across the civilized world? The only reason ISIS is a threat to the West, is because the West is refusing to deal with them and the larger issues that give them so much power.

I mean, what's the reasoning here? WHen we say we shouldn't let everyone in because it could fuel terrorism, we're all nazi's and fascists, but if we say we shouldn't build nuclear powerplants because the terrorists we can't stop from entering because muh feels will blow them up, THAT is a sound argument?

But this is not clean, Hydrogen can store energy, not produce it, you have to effectively use energy to create the hydrogen, after which you can use it as fuel. At the moment it is still redundant because the hydrogen process is powered by electricity, and that power is still mostly made with fossil fuels.

Just so everyone is clear the only reason wind was viable was because they were receiving massive government handouts. Both the manufacturer and the land owners.

In Europe funding stopped and now the only serious producers are going bankrupt.

People are too dumb to realise that the money used to subsidise them had HUGE pollution costs. Every dollar or euro comes off the back of workers driving and being in a factory or office block that uses power. Deliberately ignored in all equations.

Goes for solar too only difference is solar is at a citizen level and movement is slower.

Thorium has a half life of 10 years meaning you can spill it or whatever.

Plus Fukushima is an example of how safe nuclear is not how dangerous it is
