It just didn't feel genuine to me. Rather, it seemed like they wanted you to feel empathy for the characters by just letting the worst possible shit happen to them nonstop. Rape, abuse, starvation, hilariously over the top wardens, just everything you could make up.
But ironically, by doing that, it just came off as unrealistic and forced.
A little moderation and it might have been decent.

As you can probably tell it's an anime about boxing. Personally, I didn't even give a shit about boxing but HnI drew me in immediately.

No Game No Life is amazing. It's the most beautiful anime I've ever seen, both in terms of color and animation.
The characters were also a lot of fun.
It didn't take itself too seriously and stayed as a dumb "let's have fun and play games" show with lots of unapologetic, and even in-character acknowledged, fanservice.
I got the 80USD limited edition and don't regret it one bit, reading through the light novel right now.

As a someone who has seen over 700 anime over the years, here is a list of the best I have seen. There are my opinion by the way, but you should still take it seriously ;
Code Geass - A fucking classic, the OP though, the fucking ending made me want to gas myself from feels
Akame Ga Kill - A really good plot, and fast. They aren't touchy with the viewer either, they fucking are cut throat about it all. The ending is the feels of the feels. WHY TATSUMI WHY
Kill La Kill - Interesting art style, and mild comedy. Prefer the dub, by the way.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - A classic. Made anime be taken seriously. The symbolizism is so fucking deep that Moot's cucked asshole isn't even close. One of the best of the best.
Trigun - Yeah, I mean, the story was alright, but it is a fucking classic. I loved watching the thing, it is a really fun anime. The ending isn't shit for once (older anime most of the time have shit endings).
STEINS;GATE - HOLY FUCKING FUCK. THIS WAS GOOD. AS FUCK. LIKE, WATCH IT. It is tied with Code Geass to me. It is so fucking good, the concept and the fucking plot. I can't even describe it. It is slow the first 7 episodes, then you fucking wish it was slow the rest of the time, because the feels is fucking killing you.
Elfen Lied - This shit was the fucking shit. I think it is second in my ranking. The ending is absolutely beautiful.
And because why fucking not, Angel Beats.
The ending was the fucking feels of the feels. It is up there with Akame Ga Kill on the feels scale. Might as well throw in Panty & Stocking & Garterbelt for the fucks too. It is kinds of funny, but the soundtrack is sick.

shows that use deeper themes by basically just mentioning them are not good shows. you need exploration of these ideas and writing/characters that are believable enough to carry this exploration throughout the show.
i find a lot of shows start off with deep stuff but the characters are shit or the writing is terrible and it just becomes cringy
