Been a welder going on 8 years now. If the cylinder is worth a shit, sparks from a grinder or a cutoff wheel won't do it. It's dumb to risk it, but it's still extremely unlikely unless you have a small leak somewhere. What WILL make it pop is laying your mig gun or tig torch and ESPECIALLY your stick with your clamp connected to it anywhere near it. I've seen it happen and god it's not pretty. But grinder sparks? No. The only reason they tell you not to is on the off chance the cylinder is defective and has a slight leak.
