Basically what happens is the show/game/webcomic/whatever gets some good feedback. People like it.
In this case, /co/ considered it decent enough as a children's cartoon. A few of those cringey weird fucks see this. They attach themselves to the cartoon, thinking now they'll be able to fit in since it's not despised.
As the fandom grows, more cringey fucks join in until normies start dropping out because holy shit guys calm down.
Eventually it gets so bad that it's populated almost entirely by cringey fucks.
