Mark Hamil captured the spirit of the Joker better in the animated series imo--for a kids show that shit was pretty dark and gritty. Not saying Ledger was bad, because lets face it he was the only good thing about the movie, but the Animated Series nailed Joker, and Batman dead-on. The movie was trying too hard to reinvent him, and give him some sort of purpose and motivation, where aside from being Batman's nemesis, he really has none. it's from the batman comic books. They have been around since 1939 and are still being made today, as well as feature movies and children's cartoons and even a live action tv serie with Adam West back in the day.

The Joker is a pretty popular character in modern pop culture. I imagine this is because he fits into the trickster god that our ancestors worship and idolize even to this day, prevailant in characters such as Puck, Loki, Anansi and so on. Also Heath Ledger played him in a fairly reverent and well acted manner in a recent movie. Many people feel that Ledger's sudden and untimely death helped imortalize his portrayal of the joker and so any attempt to play him again will always now be compared to that.

Personally I think that the best interpretation is by Alan Moore in the Killing Joke but there we are. Alan Moore is a dark god amongst men and should be rightly venerated and feared. If you ever try reading comic books I reccomend his titles. Also, maybe you should get out more to educate yourself on other popular cultural figures.

I can't answer the question the way you phrased it. There aren't certain parts that specifically define what I'm saying. The character was far more complex than typical villains are. His motivations and perspective were nuanced and complex, slowly revealing themselves as the film progressed. He was portrayed as a very highly intelligent person who was very self aware, someone who chose to be what he was because it's what he wanted.

I'm not an huge comic fan, in fact I hardly ever care for them or films based on them. TDK was an exception.

I don't really have a problem with re-imagining characters for adaptations, as long as it's not fucking retarded in return. In fact if done good, I welcome it.

It's just that Hollywood rarely does shit right when they do this. Nolan's adaptation, really wasn't all that bad of an effort, on paper at least. The movies themselves though, are kind of boring. Like I said Heath Ledger was the only good thing about it. Had it not been for him (and probably the fact he died soon after making it), the movie would be either forgotten, or compared unfavorably to Batman and Robin whenever it did get mentioned--not to say that that's really a fair comparison, but you know it would be made, a lot.

Heat Legend's performance as the joker was beyond every expectations from the audience. Like Daniel Day Lewis usually does, Legend immersed himself completely in the character, creating a unique state of mind, mimics, way to move, etc. His delivery was flawless. THIS is 10/10 acting.

Nicoleson was pretty great too, different, but great. He unfortunately had some awkward moments and the movie didn't age so well, so that doesnt help either.

Leeto's performance will probably be awesome, but the "cool-freak-Mansonesque" direction taken for this character will never top Legend's interpretation.

Nolan never gave Heath's character enough screen time in any scene to see how 'immersed' Heatth actually was.

If nearly every Joker scene had about 5 more seconds of camera time we wuold've no doubt seen an amazing performance...but due to the way the film was shot and edited, we got a decent performance of an oddball character in a shit film with no depth or character whatsoever.
