I'm not the best to ask for good horror movies, I usually intentionally watch shitty ones.

so bump

And thinking of watching The Conjuring tonight

Funny games. American remake of a Swedish film, I think, 2007.
Quite unsettling, no jump scares, very unreliant on the gore. Hardly any of it, to be honest.

The Seasoning House is a relatively disturbing film, not really what I'd call horror, but it was disturbing

Other than that Just watched As Above So Below, I liked it.

The Babadook - 2014.

A troubled widow discovers that her son is telling the truth about a monster that entered their home through the pages of a children's book.

Really great movie. Again one that doesn't rely on jump scares or gore, but instead unsettles you until the monster is revealed, and it's more the suspense than anything else that just, well, unsettles everything you've known about depression.

wow you can't be serious. i was rolling my eyes the ENTIRE time. not even remotely scary.

[spoiler] and by the way, it was about unwilling possession. they don't conjur ONE GOD DAMN THING in the entire movie /[spoiler]

Another movie that's not straight out horror, but is just plan creepy and unsettling, and leaves you with a weird feeling.

what in your personal opinion is a true, good horror movie then?
>>
>>602490822
It's got scary moments, but a lot of it is about the psychological terror and the mom being mentally unwell.

Because God damnit, being unsettled is better than being outright scared.
Mulholland Drive - 2001

After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesiac, she and a perky Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality

Very few jump scares, in fact, I think there's only one or two. David Lynch, the director, does an excellent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat with very little effort at all.

Avoid American horror movies.

British Horror movies are the way to go

Every American Horror movie
>Family moves into home
>Family has kids and a dog
>Kids start hearing things
>Parents think kids are crazy
>Mom starts hearing things
>Dad doesn't care
>Dad comes home from work to find family screaming cliche
>Family calls priest
>Priest sprays water around
>The demon/ghost ends up going away when the family tells it go away

Idk, I guess American ghosts are powerless if you just tell them to go away.
>>
>>602491880
i'm a sucker for aliens and found footage. fourth kind got me spooked but mebe its just cause i was younger.

blair witch was good for what it is.

oh and there was this one movie i completely forgot the title. it was in a horror thread a long time ago. i could never find it online but it was supposed to be like actually disturbing. something for the most calloused horror fans. something to do with dressing a girl up like a pig and fucking her in a basement i think. it was foreign. the director had a funny name. got me interested again hang on ill dig around for a few minutes.

oh and for your question..idk if you're new ig you could start out with august underground if you like gore and torture and stuff.

>Lake Mungo

I don't want to spoil it by saying too much about it, but it's essentially about a girl that drowns and then her family is grieving. It's filmed in a documentary style.

It's a slow burning movie, that gave me chills watching the first 20 mins.

The best way to watch it is late at night, with all the lights off, and turning off your laptop/phone.

This movie was fucking SHIT
>>
I liked Rosemary's Baby, The Fly (1986), and "Box" from Three...Extremes.

>>602492237
I did like The Thing - especially the part where the guy's face distorts when he's screaming, and the story's resonance with "At the Mountains of Madness."

I thought Blair Witch would have been good, but I'd seen it parodied too many times before watching the actual movie.

Paranormal Activity 1 & 2 hit a lot of my haunted house buttons (I'd recommend watching the second one first), but I couldn't really call them scary.

I adore the Silent Hill franchise, but don't think the movies are worth anything.

>>602489448
Interested in this.

Basically, I'm still looking for a movie that really scares me. I'm not into torture porn re: A Serbian Film (it doesn't scare me, I just get sad). I mean, the way I feel about people killing people is not the same horror I feel about *monsters* killing people -- although I would need a movie to involve some psychological terror to be truly great. I just wish the horror genre would step up its game and RUIN ME already.

I dont watch many horror movies now because they all suck, Sinister is the first goon one I've seen in a LONG time. and horror isn't all about jump scares. Did you just google obscure horror films?
>>
>>602510956
I don't know what to do with all of this

Someone has obviously never read a book in their adult life. The whole reason it is scary is because they don't show you anything. It leaves you to imagine what could be so frightening as to make a grown man stand in a corner while his friend gets slaughtered.
People with no imagination are what's killing the horror genre as a whole. Leaving us with shit like Annabelle and Sinister where jumps = scares.

I just keep a list of ones I have seen.

The jump scares weren't necessarily what scared me in Sinister. It was more the music that accompanied the snuff films that gave me the chills.

Come on, Blair Witch was overhyped and you know it. Most of the movie was shitty buildup and "hurr durr we can't find our way outta the woods." The only intersting part were the fucking rocks. Even the scenes in darkness where they were freaking out asking who's out there were dumb.

I think if you liked Session 9, you might also enjoy The Devil's Chair.

its psychological. you have to put yourself in their shoes. Your completely lost in the woods. You have no food. No water. Its cold. You start hearing noises and the people you are with are starting to act insane. Worst still, you can feel yourself slipping into insanity.

What's that one with a pyscho family on a farm or somethin and they have an underground labarynth type thing I've been trying to find it for so long

Now I can get why people don't like it as barely anything happens, but I happen to love the film. The only thing I will defend is the decision to not show the witch. You do that and you ruin the entire film. Nothing is scarier than the human imagination, see Darth Maul wannabe in Insidious or any demon in recent horrors. As soon as you see it, you can get used to it. In the worst cases, it just looks laughable.

Awesome fucking flick, btw

(anybody remember the old "Who shot Alexander Hamilton" milk commercial? Yeah, that was the kid from people under the stairs)

>>602508666
your trips are the only scary thing about this movie the torture scene is not intense and the rest is just boring and believe me im not getting bored fast
