all the time. fyi, women are way way more shallow then men, and they talk constantly. im ablaid back boss, so they treat me like one of the girls, even though they know im not gay, having dated like 4 or 5 staff members over the years

working in the ED we get all the fun ones, like people who "slipped in the shower" and got a shampoo bottle stuck up their ass. We had a 13 yr old kid who thought it would be interesting to shove beads up his urethra then they got stuck. A homeless lady who tried to shoplift a bottle of wine up her junk, she only got the top of the bottle in, and the police said they didnt dare try and pull it out cause if she got injured she would sue them so they brought her to us
>>
>>600981979
a few, actually. cnas and housekeepers do this. i had a cna with a mustang and a maintenance guy who drove a vet. most of the non-nurses we employ make min wage or just above it. they dont last long because common sense is everything in nursing homes.
>>
>>600982316
we get the same people for rehab after they leave the hosp. i had a klepto lady last week who stole other pts things and hid them in her vagina. we get a lot of homeless and mental pts too, hidden comorbidities and the like. mostly their families just stop giving a shit and medicaid picks them up and all of us pay for it.
>>

>Are you an RN?
>How much school/training did you need?
>How much do you make?
>Do you love what you do!
>Hate my job and I've considered going back to school to be a nurse but I'm old (almost 45) too late for me?
>>
>>600984265
yes. this happens all the time. family members do all sorts of fucked up shit. they do it constantly. i have one lady right now who is in a veg state, and has papers that say i do not want my life prolonged, and the family refuses to give us a copy, is constantly harrasinf is to cure the uncurable- cashing in her pention all the while. when she finally, mercifully dies, they will sue us for keeping her alive. it happens constantly like that. people are really fucked up that way. everyone who sees this stuff, from the nurses to other front office staff like me, eventually becomes cynical and jaded as fuck.
>>

How does the hospital protect itself from asshats like this?
>>
>>600984273
Not OP, but
RN after 2 years school (+1 yr pre-reqs)
I make $35/hr but since I mostly work nights and weekends I get two seperate $4/hr differentials so I really end up making $43
I went to nursing school at 36, several of my classmates were over 40.
I do love it, but unlike OP I dont work at a SNF
>>
>>600984273
yes im an rn. two year degree. made 64 as a floor nurse, make 80 in administration. i used to love my job, but after a while it takes a heavy toll on you. 90 percent of all nurses go into it later in life, i think the average age is like late 30s.
>>
>>600976162
Was the schooling hard? How about long? Do you do some kind of work/school time?
>>
>>600985072
we dont. we have insurance and we are budgeted to lose so many hundreds of thousands to lawsuits. but my facility is just average size, and we make many millions every year. healthcare is very lucrative business
>>

It's not easy

>>600985891

>>
>>600985492
it depends on the school you go to. its hard, but theres plenty of idiots in my profession, same as any other. there is extensive clinical training in basically every program. it took me 4 years to get my assoc degree but thats just because i never grad high school
>>
>>600985152
>>600985257
Thanks guys! I appreciate the info

I really need a change and I'd like to do something that's helping other people.

Biggest concerns for me are
>Failing at nursing school (never done anything like that)
>Accidentally causing harm to someone I'm taking care of (seems that it would be real easy to fuck up and get a patient dead or worse)
>>
>>600986021
i suggest volunteering at a hospital and finding a niche you like. there are a million jobs that pay well and not all are nursing. but to be a nurse there are mental hurdles you have to break through concerning gross things and life and death things that few people are really built to handle
>>
>>600986021
Try nursing assistant work first, can get your cert in like 2 weeks in most states. Generally pays minimum wage or slightly higher, but can at least give you an idea. The school is not easy, but it is do-able with some long hours and a will to succeed. If you are smart you will go to a community college so it shouldnt even be too expensive, my whole 2 years cost me about $12k in tuition. I know a gal who went to a private 4 year university and got her BSN for 90k... not worth that kind of money.
>>
>>600986469
We had 4 people not make it through our nursing program, only one failed out (she was 19 and partied instead of studying) but the other 3 could not get past the facts of the field, one would vomit at the sight of blood and another up and quit 1 year into the program because she was expected to clean some shit up. blew my mind she made it that far.
>>
>>600986021
also, we eat our young. which is to say, its unlikely anyone will hold your hand when you graduate, and you absolutely will fuck up at some point. it happens to everyone. you have to be strong enough emotionally as well as mentally

my college cost a grand total of ten grand. only half our class made it to grad, but of those, 90% passed the tst on first try. the nclex rn is the hardest stand test you will ever take.
>>
>>600986513
Hmmm...

Locally I've seen RN programs for 2 years all the way up to Bachelors - Does it make a difference? I mean no matter what program you take - The test you take to become an RN is the same right?

Or do people look down on RNs without higher degrees?
>>

i deal with this every day. its a situation that builds drama easily. people cry in my office every day, people come to me with their personal injustices every day.

Have family that's in the medical field?
>>
Maybe one of you guys can help me understand this
I've seen RN programs for 2 years and I've seen LPN programs for almost as long

RNs make a lot more than LPNs

Why would anyone opt for the LPN program when for another 6 months of training they could increase their earning by like $10 per hour or sumthin?
>>
>>600987562
nobody cares if you have a adn or a bsn or a msn. at least not in a nursing home. but even in hospitals, there isnt much you absolutely have to have a bsn for. my staff is a broad mix. yes, the test is exactly the same.
>>
>>600988249
no. im the only one in my fam with any degree
>>
>Implying that pay or status matters when you have to take out 100+ thousand dollar loans to spend your 20s in extremely difficult medical school just to work 12+ hour days dealing with sick and dieing people.
>>
>>600988347
ive never understood this either. i pay my lpns 12 per hr less than my rns and they do exactly the same job. not necc the case everywhere but it is in nursing homed
>>
How pretentious and smug are the doctors you deal with?

Do they treat you like janitors?
>>
>>600987953
This confuses me. I've heard conflicting stories...

>We have a huge shortage of nurses and need more desperately!

>Nurses have a hard time finding work because all of these nursing schools have pumped out so many graduates that the job market is saturated
>>
>>600988809
again, my cc education costed me almost nothing. my loans were paid off in a year
>>
>>600988857
they are smug all the way to the bank. they arent pretentious- we tell them what to do, not the other way around. most of them dont even know who their pts ARE, let alone anything about them
>>
>>600976162
How bad do you suck at life to get stuck working in a nursing home.
>>
>>600989011
its dif in dif parts of the country. where i live, you can throw a stone in any direction and be hired.
>>
>>600989456
i didnt get stuck. they pay more, i came here from a hospital. also they promote faster. im a 8 year assoc rn, and i run a multimillion dollar skilled nursing facility. besides the pay, my resume is stellar as shit should i ever wish to leave
>>
A nurse I once spoke with (kicking myself for not asking if he was LPN, RN, etc) said he worked for some kind of agency - Said he worked taking care of a bedridden teenage boy in his parents home.

He claimed it was easy work (only one patient) and more or less made his own schedule. Also not a lot of stress - Sat on his ass reading a lot while the patient slept, no body dying, etc.

Sound like bullshit to you?
>>
>>600990358
sounds like what a lot of nurses i fired are doing right now. private duty, agency, home care, and mother/baby nurses have the easiest jobs on earth. most er and med/surg nurses think theyre a joke though. they also think nursing home nurses are a joke too, until they come try it. then they quit cause its too hard.
>>
>>600986513
Gimme a general idea of what would be so difficult about the schooling
>>
>>600991063
Well damn. I really thought he was full of shit.

I mean why would somebody pay a nurse to sit on their ass and take care of one patient when other nurses are busting their asses taking care of a bunch of patients in ERs and whatnot
>>
>>600991613
well for me, the hardest part was the things i have no interest in. psych nursing and mother/baby were hard cause i didnt like them and couldnt relate in any way, from the classroom to the clinicals. in general you will have clases, labs, and clinicals, so one class might occupy like 16 in school hours, and thats hard for a lot of people. and the nclex rn- the test- i dont know anyone who said it was easy. it was extremely hard for me at least. its structured very differently from any other test youve taken.
>>
>>600976162
Is your name luke?
>>
>>600991927
nope. even easier- being an endoscopy nurse. you hand a doctor tools and take vitals on people who are about to be put under. thats pretty much it.
>>
>>600992659
nope. and i would honestly tell you if it was.
>>
>>600992456
How long did it take to get used to seeing all sorts of fucked up shit?

I'm at uni but going to have to transfer to an actual nursing school after prerequisites and stuff. I seriously regret it.
>>
>>600992808
How much harder is it to be a physician ?
>>
>>600990358
>>600991063
So what would be good job closest to doing things like this? Just get a nursing degree and go into some kind of agency?
>>
>>600992812
its prob the hardest hurdle. for me, it took until i worked with a surgeon in a clinical about a year in. surgeons are just... just really fucked up. theyre like the prankster jocks if medicine was a high school. after working with them though, a switch kind of flipped in my brain. i started seeing people like a mechanic sees cars. thats the best simile i can make. you start seeing bodies as meat vessels that need fixing. thats how it is for me anyways. every nurse i know has one thing though that they will never get over. for me its the smell of dried piss and sweat mixed together. the only thing that still grosses me out.
>>
>>600992936
a lot lot more school. in turn, a more comprehensive, but less sensible, understanding of problems.

every nurse has one. most common ive heard is mucous. cdiff smell too, is common.
>>
>>600994769
two tips.
1- the absolute best skill a nurse can ever have is confidence. hands down. right or wrong, doing something, is always always better than doing nothing.

2- every nurse fails and gets overwhelmed within their first year. everyone. its called hitting the wall. you have to push through it. your mistake will never be worse than what i did- just trust me on that. but i learned from it, and became stronger, and ultimately succeeded.

well depending on where you come from economically and socially, dont do what i did, which is take your newfound fat lewts and get way into debt. also if uou are male, and straight, you will get pussy, because you're like the only guy around. dont do what i did and immediately knock up a cna. enjoy yourself some.
as for nursing, just remember my first two tips and youll be way ahead of the field.
two more-
1- nurses are extremely superstitious- at least all the ones i know are. we never say certain words out loud, we do some things in peculiar ways. if you come out knowing this you will get a leg up in respect and fitting in.
2- you dont learn much in nursing school at all really. whats important you wont learn until another nurse decides to teach you. but you have to ask.

a lot o time in nursing school is spent not teaching you things but rather trying to teach people how to as my school liked to say "think like a nurse" which really means how to think critically. I you can handle critical thinking, you can get through most everything with that

Gotta ask. Its certainly not a deal breaker or anything but...

Ever get she for being a guy that is a nurse? No other profession I can think of gets treated this way. Never hear "Oh! You're a male teacher?" or "She's a female engineer"

>But "male nurse". ...just rubs me wrong

Fucking autocorrect

Was asking do you ever get "shit" for being a guy that's a nurse

In the real world that is - Not here among the /b/tards
>>
>>601001385
yep take shit all the time. then i think about my secretary. and my stock options. haters can hate. dont give a flying fuck. most of the time its why arent you a doctor? high school dropout. no money. no support system. why arent you an astronaut?
>>
>>601001385
rarely, more often I get praise because people are relieved they have a male nurse. Especially men with problems shitting (opiods constipate people badly) or with their dicks. Also little old ladies and old dudes just trust men more.
>>
>>601001776
Gonna sound stupid, but they should change the name

>Nurses are only something like 10% men
>Nursing shortage could be eliminated if men started joining at same rate as women
>The stigma of being a "male nurse" almost certainly the primary reason

Rename the profession something more gender neutral and shit would solve itself
>>
>>600994817
what's cdiff?
>>
>>601002057
yes, i never take shit at work or amongst other hcps at all. take plenty of shit from friends and other people who just dont know and only have retarded stereotypes as a guide.
>>
>>601002278
Honestly, if you are bothered that people might think less of you for being a male nurse, you probably aren't cut out for it anyway. See the earlier bits about critical thinking, I know few nurses who care about this kind of thing as actions speak louder.
And for now being a male nurse is great, hospitals and SNFs WANT more male nurses, gives you a good set of opportunities to get good positions.

clostridium difficile. its a hospital superspore, meaning its a highly resistant infection thatbis hard to kill with normal abts. it causes explosive dhiarhea and acute gi distress, stays with you for a very long time, and smells like absolutely the worst shitty nastiness you could think of.

I'm studying to be a PA but I'm thinking that if thew work load gets too hard I might change to a Nurse Practitioner. Any advice or opinions?
>>
>>601002663
Interesting. Never considered that being a guy could actually be an asset.
>>
>>601002730
np and pa are almost the same job, but i think (not sure) nps make more
>>
>>601002348
clostridium difficile
a bacteria. Takes over your intestines and kills all the good bacteria that live there that youneed to digest and absorb foods. Can kill you, but mostly it makes you shit your brains out, and your shit STINKS. Once you have smelled C.diff shits you remember that smell.
Fun Fact: One of the most effective methods o treating it is a fecal-transplant. Taking someone else's healthy shit and cramming it up your pooper (well carefully inserting it to the large intestines)

For me it is the old pussys that aren't really washed deep inside and piss in their diapers all the time.
Also tracheostoma mucus coughing is pretty intense to me.

Cool to read about other male nurses! I specialised in psychiatric care. Never gets boring..

Female nurses love to have you around as you are big and strong. In the ED we often get people who grope the female staff, but legally we cannot deny them treatment even if they are fuck-bags In those cases they swap patients with me as I am 6'4" and fatter than I like to admit.

>>
>>601003192
we get a lot of homeless guys who come in to basically sleep ina warm room sometimes. I remember my first time encountering one of the worst smelling ones. You have to make a choice, a horrible choice. you ARE going to experience them, but you have to choose if you are going to breathe through your nose and experience them as a smell, or through your mouth and experience them as a flavor.
tip: wear a surgical mask with some fresh coffee grounds inside it

>>
>>601003581
no. I am perfectly happy as a nurse and wouldnt want to spend another 8 years in school to be a doc, there is really no need.
Nurses and Doctors have different jobs, they really arent the same. One of the best ways I have heard it described is that "Doctors treat diseases (cancer, viruses, etc) and systems (cardiac, pulmonary, etc) and nurses treat people and their response to disease. Sure we do a lot of medical procedures, but in the end nursing is more personal and allows me to connect to my patients better and I do like that.

and you still have way more upper body strength than most of the female nurses by a longshot
>>
well guys its been super fun. theres enough other nurses here to contimue this as long as you want, but my downloads are done and its time to fap/sleep. feep? flap?
so this is op signing off. thanks for good convo /b/ros, it was a serious pleasure.

Ok, so dumb question, I have a lot of tattoos, no neck, no hands, is that going to be a topic of a lot of debate or cause problems?
>>
>>601003405
Thanks man. It very much depends on the ward and the specislization. The acute department with closed doors can be pretty wild, thats where i startet my education lol.

>>601003708
haha you know what you are talking about. I
know it too, man. But then they don't want to shower because they will be raped by aliens in there- then you need to improvise. It really never gets boring.
>>
Great thread guys, Good talking to other male nurses here, and maybe some of you others will join us in the profession soon
>>
>>601004477
depends where you work If you can cover it with your clothes no one will know. I work with a couple guys (and one gal) with full sleeve tattoo's in the ED at a medium-sized city hospital on the west coast. Some private hospitals (especially the religious ones I hear) do have problems with it, a lot of nursing homes are so desperate for nurses they wouldnt care unless you had "SATAN'S RAPIST" tattooed across your face
>>
Great thread Nurse/bros.

I'm out as well, have a good shift.
Maybe i'll make another nurse thread tomorrow, as a psych ward nurse i have many stories to tell.
>>
>>601004289
I'm surprised sometimes by how true this is

I briefly dated a girl who was a firefighter. WAY more fit than me. But when we wrestled - I could pin her everytime. Men just have better upper body strength.

Note: But if she could get her legs wrapped around me, she could squeeze me around the waste so hard I couldn't fucking breathe

But i've already done like 40% of the Medicine program. (Internal medicine, Pathology, surgical pathology, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Ginecology, obstetrics, Physiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Public health and Epidemiology)
