Ask a Venezuelan living in Venezuela anything

Let's try to confirm or deny rumors about my country that you may have read or heard.

About me:
27 yo
Male
Professional
Stable work
Shitty salary

I'll bump the thread with some stories about real personal experiences
>>
>Be me

>Be an electoral witness for the elections that were taking place

>A hundred chavists on motorcyles arrive at my voting center

>They say I look too burgoise

>take me out from the voting center at gunpoint while screaming how I’m a capitalist pig and a traitor to the homeland because I disagree with their political views

>The military stationed to secure the voting centers do nothing when I ask for help

>They actually let me leave but I can’t go back into the voting center

This same thing happened twice during two entirely different elections. The next day I woke up, went to class and to work. Just another day

Have you bought black market toliet paper?
>>
Story two

>Be me

>Be in a text fight with my gf and tell her to eat shit

>Man, I really want some ice cream. Tell my buddies and go get some

>inb4 you’re gay

>implying I’m not

>Be back. In the parking lot of my building with my friends and a big ass bucket of delicious ice cream

>Go to elevator area

>What’s the meaning of this?

>Two guys have a girl pinned to the wall and are screaming at her about money

>look at us, point at us with their guns

>”don’t you fucking move you fucking pieces of shit”

>Have been held at gunpoint so many times we don’t actually freak out and simply obey

>They take us to the girl’s apartment

>They take away our things

Cont.
>>
>>674564823
Yes, of course. Just today I bought 48 rolls of toilet paper pro Bs. 8800. Minimum wage is almost 12000 Bolivares.
It's only truly available in the black market or after endless lines and a huge load of luck
>>
>>674564909

>”What kind of car do you drive?” The leader of the apes asks

>A 1979 Jeep Wagoneer

>Keep your shitty old truck, you’ll need it to go to class

>So kind of him, all while tying us up with telephone cable

>They leave us tied and gaged in the floor while tearing apart the place

>They actually leave the place

>They took my fucking ice cream too

>We manage to untie ourselves, get out to another apartment before they are back to try and call the police

>No answer from the emergency numbers. As usual

>Next morning, police knocks on my door. “you have to come down to the station, we appreciate your collaboration”

>Get there

>The kidnapper that gave me back my car keys is an actual cop there

>say I know nothing, couldn’t see anything. Go back home

>next day I woke up and went to class and work. Life as usual.

They took my dad’s cellphone from me. I had his last pics there, he passed away the month before this happened
>>
>Be February 12th2014

>Be in a huge student protest

>Manage to get to the Prosecutor General’s office to demand justice

>Two blocks up from the office all shit gets loose

>The government has sent, once more, his thugs to throw stones and explosives at us while shooting at the air

>Wait a second

>these are not regular Colectivos, National Guard or police men

>These are the Fucking SEBIN (wich translates to Bolivarian Services of National Intelligence)

>These are the fuckers that make people disappear and torture them to death

>Shit hits the fan. They star shooting guns straight at us

>We regroup, try to defend ourselves as possible

>They’re closing on us.

>Some of us stay back to try and delay them while the rest fled

>Wearing masks, of course, as pictures are being taken by them all the time

>The first of us falls to the ground not 5 meters from where I was standing

>We recover his body but I already knew the damage was fatal

>The only way to take him to a hospital was to tie him unconscious to a motorcycle and to it’s driver

Two more of us fell down that day. I can remember with absolute clarity the look on our atackers’ face. It was hate, disgust. We were maggots on their table. I was 5 meters from Bassil Da Costa. He died that day and my hands were covered in his blood.

>Continue the scape. It took about 40 minutes for the rest of the marchers to figure out what was happening two blocks up. Outrage. Pain. Anger.

>They started burning police cars. We started burning them. Throwing rocks at the Prosecutor General’s office.

>We were demanding Security, among many other things in that office

>people were getting slaughtered by the government two blocks away

>The Prosecutor never came out

When I got home, when I was finally free of fear and safe again, I cried. Convulsive sobs of anger, of indignation. The next day I woke up and got to work. Just a regular day. I went to the subsequent protests, first as a protestor, but then I went to study what was going on, let my anthropology skills work for me.

The entire movement was infiltrated by chavists that stirred violence and led it the wrong way, made the whole thing beneficial for the government.

Tried to warn the others but their anger was beyond rationality.

South America is really fucked. Wish you the best, OP

It is, but among the mess Venezuela is the land of the absurd and the home of the insane
>>

>>
>>674566658
The government uses an Anti imperialism discourse with USA being the main antagonist. They do blame USA for the economic disaster the government created, for interfering with state affairs and a lot of other stuff
More than half the population has stopped believing their bullshit, thankfully
>>
Think the mess going on right now will change anything? If there is opposition progress, will Maduro use the military to retain power? And if so, would the people of Venezuela accept help from a certain American intelligence agency? Im asking for a friend of course.
>>
Do you believe the crisis to be a result of socialism or a government without opposition
>>
>>674567009
It's very hard to tell. Since there's no true independence between powers, the recently elected National Assembly (with a majority o 2/3 for the opposition) has been doing what it can. Nonetheless, the government has been stopping every attempt from the NA to restore order and investigate corruption, using the Supreme Justice Tribunal as an executioners hand.
Military interference is a possibility but it won't help anyone, the population will suffer the worst.
Maduro's government is near, the problem is we don't actually know how it will end and who will take the empty spot. Even if 're opposition ends in the presidency, the institutional decomposition, the structural economic collapse and the total failure of basic services are unavoidable
>>
>>674566180
Cen donde estaban ustedes anon?
>>
>>674567491
The crisis is the result of the social, economic and politic model implemented by Chavez and continued by Maduro.
Instead of reinforcing national production the government destroyed the entire productive apparatus.
Since an immense amount of dollars entered the country by selling Oil, they didn't give a shot abut production and imported everything. Everything. They also robbed about 70% or more of the total oil income, no one knows where that money is.
Now that the prices of I'm have fallen, we can't import shit, nor produce it. There's hunger and misery

There's a chance of an uprising but the efforts are being put to solve the crisis in a political way, the less violence the better.

Short story
>Be me

>Going to work, still on my street

>Hear a turned off motorcycle getting near (it’s an inclined street, he came from the top)

>Inb4 how did you hear that shit and know what it was without looking

We, Venezuelans, are terrorized on daily bases by thugs on motorcycles, we learn our predator’s ways

>Calculate distance, see a truck parked near the curve, only protection available.

>Finally hear the asshole “Stand still or I’ll fucking blow your brains out”

>turn around and look at his pistol

>run towards the truck, fool him into thinking I was going downstreet
>actually run up, his motorcycle didn’t start so I managed to run away

>Waited a couple hours and went to work. Just a regular day
>>
>>674569264
It has happened but media coverage is very strictly monitored by the government and that kind of information usually never gets anywhere.
Plus, in an overly centralized state, shit may have hit the fan everywhere in the country, but if it hasn't hit the fan in the capital, nothing happens

Honest thoughts on Madurismo and the transition from Chavismo? Are you a supporter of either? Have you felt part of Chinese incursion into Venezuelan affairs?

I know the Chinese have had this massive bailout of Venezuela, but I was wondering if you were aware of anything bc they've been increasing their investments in Venezuela and with the oil depreciation and all... Like any change in business or if you know anyone that is affected by this.

Have you seen any report of FARC moving into Venezuela to avoid being affected by the Colombian negotiations? Read a report that Brasileño military had seen FARC in NE Brasil in about 2003 -- wondering if the current round of peace negotiations have pushed FARC into Venezuela?

Love reading all this because this is exactly what is happening right now in my country. Ecuadorian here, this sad excuse of the president we have is using the same formula his buddies are using and are doing nothing but dividing the country and taking away our money. This so called XXI century socialism is tearing the country appart.

The transition from Chavismo to Madurismo was rough to chavistas because the whole political movement, it's views and philosophy came from Chavez. Adding to that, most of the crisis during Chavez time were resolved in the government's benefit just because Chavez could sweet talk his way out everything
Maduro is the heir of a collapsing reign, based on the sole economic activity of selling Oil. And the most abrasive corruption that allowed that the one million million dollars that entered the country through oil sells disappear completely. In ten years one million million dollars entered the nation. After selling our gold the National reserves don't reach 30 thousand million dollars.
They pillaged the country clean, both Chavez and Maduro.
The Chinese invest wisely, they don't take money, they make agreements such as an exclusive permission to exploit a huge oils reserve for 50 years. And Coltan. And diamonds now.
The FARC negotiates with the FANB on daily basis, the biggest drug business in the world

Another story

>Was out shopping

>Went to one of the government “supermarkets” because they were cheaper

>Full of hungry people

>They were selling Pernil (The entire leg of a pig. It is roasted and served in Christmas, as tradition follows, but tradition has been difficult to respect in this economy)

>There’s not enough food for everyone

>people star getting anxious

>Then people actually start fighting for food

>Punching each other for pieces of chicken or meat

>Feel a sorrow as deep as Moria’s deepest crevice

>Leave without buying anything

>Next day, go to work as usual

That was the first time I saw something like that, it left me marked forever and I remember clearly, even after 4 years. In time, they have become a regular thing. Now there’s real hunger, most people are eating once or twice a day and they spend their time in endless lines for food, health supplies and the likes.

>Public health systems in Venezuela aren’t working properly for some years

>Doctors are super great but, hey, if they don’t even have cotton, what can we expect?

>Spend all the money on insurance and private healthcare

>He gets better

>We good

>One day he starts talking weird, figure out it’s an ACV (CardioVacular Accident, I have no idea what’s it called in English)

>Have to take him to one of the governments CDI (Integral Diagnostic Center)

>They are run by Cubans who are brought here expecting a better life and are actually treated like slaves

>Even then, they don’t bring the good Cuban medics, Cubans keep their good stuff for themselves, mostly

>He’s taken into the emergency

>Nurse comes out, asks me to give a hand. Enter the emergency cubicle

>My fucking god, they had the audacity to actually intubate him wrong

>His belly is swollen. I can’t do anything to help, by the time I arrive I reckon his lungs already bursted

>Help the doctors but I already knew. They knew I knew. Get asked to wait outside

>A lot of family and friends show up

>I’m called in front of them to receive the news

>Not even a tear, a man must do what he must

>“How do I get his corpse back?”

I miss my oldman. Very much.

The health system in Venezuela is one of the most affected areas. This was almost 7 years ago. Today it’s impossible to offer services in many places. In the whole capital, there are only 2 resonators (how do you call that?) working. Maybe 5 Xrays machines fully operative. Sick people actually have to bring their own supplies to get surgery, doctors can only count with their knowledge, as there are no tools or supplies.

>My dad lived through a dictatorship here, back in the 50’s

>He fought against it

>he was captured, jailed and tortured over and over

>He was released. Became a damn fine lawyer and dedicated his life to make this a better country, he was deep into the national politic games.

>He actually managed it

>He would tell me and my friends: “I was almost killed so that my children could live in freedom, you, my children, are now young and strong adults and I beg of you, do not let me die without it”

I cry every time I remember because I wasn’t able to fulfill that promise. My father died and we’re still in this mess. I’m so, so sorry. I tried, I did as much as I could and he still died in a different kind of dictatorship. I’m sorry, dad.

>Be me
>Be in university
>Was deeply involved in politics and was working really hard to make things better and be rid of the government thugs that terrorized students and teachers alike. Dad was alive and I had made a promise.
>Be on faculty council
>Accuse student representatives of supporting and being a part of the gun traffic inside of the University
>Present proof
>Sit down. Council decides the matter will be addressed later
>So, in the end and after many negotiations, they actually turned their backs on me
>Government have them by the balls, they’re too afraid to do shit
>The meeting ends, go downstairs. The same students are waiting for me and my friends
>I’m surrounded. One of them comes to fight me, get ready but as soon as I do my best Jet Li impression, one of the thugs points a gun at me and commands me to stay still
>First guy commences hitting and kicking me on the floor all the while screaming “This will be the last time you try to associate us with violence in the University!!!!”
>while kicking a guy who was held at gunpoint
>All of my what
>go to the police to denounce
>They laugh in my face
>One of them actually seems sad. “Sorry son, you know that guy counts with a lot of support from the government. Actually accepting your impeachment would put us in trouble and you in the grave. I’m so sorry”

This is a common occurrence in the most prestigious and big university of my country (UCV). Since it’s a public university, the government has been reducing de budget to absurdity and has most of the council members terrorized and threatened. Now, the Mighty UCV, cultural legacy of humanity as proclaimed by UNESCO in 2000, is a pile of decadence, violence and painful longing. A mirror of the country. Revolutionaries, as they tend to call themselves, are given a lot of firepower and even Teargas grenades to sow horror in the university’s population.
