You guys should grab a small 25-key keyboard, I have the Korg microKey (pictured in first pic) and it retails at just 70 usd. Makes it a LOT simpler to doodle and find cool melodies.

Also, an old build of a current WIP that's totally unfinished with some leftover sound at the end which means ignore the last 30 seconds because they're not correct. Involves a voice sample from my friend.

Well, I have a real piano, but it's kind of far away from where I sit, so it kind of goes unused.

Also, going to college, which means no room for keyboard, and no real pianos either.

My method of getting cool melodies involves having them pop into my head, singing them badly at least 3 times into my phone, then throwing the cringeworthy recording into a spectrogram and finding the notes from that.

It works.

Here's my setup, just got everything a couple days ago, now I'm just trying to learn it all, as I never used a DAW, or midi controller, but I'm digging it.
>>
>>563450258
I'll try to elaborate in his place.

The song starts out really slow. Not temp wise, but it's really boring for the first several seconds.

Towards the middle, when the longer notes start coming in, the chords don't sound quite right to me.

I don't feel like I'm listening to one song, but rather a few different songs that have been put together. Some parts are added that don't sound like they belong (like at 1:05).

I don't think the main melody is defined enough. It feels like a rhapsody to me for most of the song.

It sounds like you're really sticking to an 8-bit sound, which is cool, but the song (or the melody, at least) seems to be a bit too slow.

This is just my impression/opinion. I'm no expert and claim no credibility. It sounds like it has some potential to it.

I feel compelled to give you the feedback because I agree with >>563449831, it's pretty bad as it stands.

sonic visualizer, with both the regular spectrogram and the peak frequency spectrogram up. FFT of 4096 IIRC, logarithmic on both. You have to fiddle with the colors and drive a little to see what you like. I use white on blue on black.
>>
>>563453508
also used the USB-to-patch cable cord from rocksmith to record guitar on a few tracks, if you have one laying around i recommend setting it up. i didn't go through the trouble of setting it to playback in real time so i'd just record my parts and EQ/mix later but it's possible, i think there's youtube videos.
>>
For OP to increase his sample library.

>>563453294 thanks a ton man! a big bass music label out of LA recently picked up the last track i made - so stoked. not supposed to mention the label's name, but lets just say it is 4 letters and ends in "MOG" ;)
>>
>>563450258
Work on the layout and timing.
and these are my thoughts and opinions:
starting out with the melody is a good way to kill it, especially when it is repeated throughout the song. I would have the strings start out with moderate rise in amplitude, fade in drums then cue melody.. progressively changing it up along the way. I like the strings (around :54) for the first five seconds or so.. it could then jump into the melody again. The strings are just too long, they might be taking up most of the song too. Keep it up, and good luck.
>>
>>563453563
Same, more of a metal head than an EDM guy though. I do tech/death metal vocals, it'd be cool to co-lab with a good producer and see what cool shit my screams could be mixed into like Big Chocolate did with Suicide Silence
>>
>>563453508
cool track! the drum samples feel a bit too imposing, maybe lower the volume or make the duller with EQ?

>>563453635

Well it's an 8-bit-based track, it kind of limits the amount of "synths" you can use. I am gonna cut up some samples for the second part of the song tho, so nice call.
>>

>>
>>563453508
hey man that track's not bad! very chill and vibey. one thing i noticed about the mixdown is that the kick has way too much high frequency content - i'm guessing tone down (use a high-shelf EQ) the frequencies from ~1000 and above

Understandable, I know how the industry is and they always keep shit as hush hush as possible. Kudos to aiming for originality, seems like everything out right now is just rehashed shit that sounds similar to other songs I've heard. It isn't always easy to come up with fresh material though, I know how that is lol. It's a good sign if your new stuff blows your old stuff out of the water, means you're progressing as a musician. My advice to you: sell two of those controllers, keep the Arturia. The track could be more dynamic. Make more complex drum lines and melodies. Your transitions sound either forced or they are simply non-existent, work on that.

I don't think it really sounds through that I do practically all the work with mouse, but what do you think?

Some nice setups going on here. Here is what i use currently. the setup is comprised of a Clavinova cvp-50. real old but still feels real enough for me for now. on top of that is my keystation 49. i have it set as a dedicated clavinet. I route the audio from it to run out to my blues driver pedal and then my cry baby wah. from there it goes to the amp next to it, a traynor.
On the left i have my 'organ' set-up. the top board is an old axiom 49. and the lower is an oxygen 49. Both are set to run native instruments vintage organs, all draw bars mapped of course. they are set up to play the upper and lower boards just like a Hammond b3 would play like. the generated audio i send through a secondary effect, the VB-3 vst. i like the Leslie better on the VB-3 but the organ to me sounds a bit off, so i get a great trade off with he great native instruments organ and the vb-3's leslie. Eventually i will route the audio through a Leslie i am currently building.
The lower board is set to play the organ, and the fender rhodes vst. (also native instruments). as well as a few other effects and goodies.
Also, interesting to note, the 'organ' looks like an organ. i tore apart and old lowrey organ i had that was more of a fire hazard than anything else, and i re-used the wood from it to make the stand you see here.
My audio breakout box is currently a ur22 by steinberg. im thinking of upgrading to the ur44 or possibly the akai eie pro. (if anyone has any feedback on that box i would like to hear it).
All powered by my laptop, a simple lenovo with i5, 6gb ddr3 ram and ample hard disk.

There is literally no room in my luggage for a keyboard at this point, everything is packed and there's enough space for this laptop, powercord, and mouse.

I kind of do want a midi keyboard, but I need a better computer first, and then i need space, and then

well it builds up. I'm working on it.

Honestly, i'm not much of a music man so those of who who are going to be making a living doing this stuff and even those who just o it as hobbies may not take this seriously.
In every single one of the samples that I've listened to i noticed one thing. It sounds like a soulless, monotonous, metronome robot is spitting the same sound out of it's ass into a bowl, ready to be fed to a bunch of toddlers.
I dig a lot of the music that I've listened to in this thread but it seems like every one of them has something missing from it. That something is so fundamental that shit like #Selfie(clubsound) feat. (eatmyassforbreakfast) still appeals to a shit ton of people.
I may be an ass and i'll be getting a lot of hate for it, but its this reason that separates artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who, Daft Punk, New Order, The Smiths, etc... from basically every other band who didn't make it big.
I'm not asking anyone to sell-out, and appeal to the millions of musically herded sheep that follow the likes of Justin Beiber. I'm just saying work and find that thing that makes your music amazing for what it is.. Kinda cheesey but.. Find its soul

Essentially, put some heart and soul into it. It's passion driven. You can hear it in A LOT of good music, but it's much harder to detect in EDM genres because a lot of the tunes are made synthetically. I feel like a lot of the passion and soul that comes from music comes from physically playing it, but if you can capture that with synth than you're set. Hence why EDM is such a hard genre to get anywhere in

They have the drummer play his lines then recreate them in editing software so the hits are consistent. These days, people won't get into a song if every other snare hit sounds different for example

Both are great, sylenth is easy to learn and you can get some great sounds designed quickly. Omnisphere is a bit trickier but has some of the best pad sounds about. I was using cracked copies for ages (anyone using cracked sylenth will at some point heard the "thank-you for trying this demo" when the crack fucks up), but ended up investing in proper copies of both of them.

>>563461262

So do you get some wood and carve all you instruments from scratch? Find skins to make your drums from?

Decent electronic musicians spend a lot of time programming our synthesis from scratch, as well as editing drums and other things to make them unique. So we probably do more work than someone who just picks up a guitar

Hey, amateur producers.

How does it feel knowing that a label wont even consider a band's recordings if they arent top professional tier?

Srs im in a band and we recorded with one of you "amateur producers" in his bedroom. (Actually a great kid with a lot of talent and experience, but the recordings just lacked a certian, hmm, professional sound)
