The worst difference is that old /b/ had raids. And it's not because of rule changes, it's because people were actually willing to work together to create some epic lulz, whereas now everybody just immediately cries NYPA whether it was or not.

The other thing you have to remember is that /b/ came about in an era before social media. The only people capable and willing to delve deep into the underbelly of the internet were the true nerds. The internet overall was still a place of unique culture fitting a certain subsect of society, and /b/ was at the helm. But then 11 year old girls found Facebook and gramps got an iPhone and suddenly the internet became a medium for the entire world, slowly infected with the mediocrity of normies and ignorant fools. A few of the more deviant ones found their way here and were so overwhelmed with the tantalizing shock value of it all that they had no choice but to share it on social media and to all their retarded friends. And this is what we have been left with. It's not just /b/, it's our entire online world. Poisoned, decayed, and forever lost to the hands of the outsiders. We used to have a place and culture that was all our own. At least we had something that we could escape to. Now it's just a distant memory, something we claw at with nostalgia to try and bring back, but the truth is that those times are dead and they have been for a while now. At least we had for a little while, if only for a moment...

Around 7, 8, or 9 years ago, my friend, who got banned from school for uploading a virus that made all of the people who would log in on a school computer, would get a porn pop up, told me about 4chan.

I originally typed in the url wrong, and found myself at a porn website.
I thought 4chan was a porn website.
He later directed me to /b/.
Upon looking at /b/, I thought that it was a porn website.

I liked /diy/ weapons and feeding my curiosity within the limits of being poor.
He directed me to /diy/, but nothing was very applicable to my knowledge and interests at the time, from the threads I looked through.

I think that one time when I told him I didn't feel like going to school, he told me not to go to school, but my mom ended up making me go anyway, and he called in a fake bomb threat at my school.

It wouldn't be until later when my bi-sexual, and possible pseudo-edgy, semi-intellectual (I'm so intelligent that everyone seems stupid, but he could be above-average in intelligence), friend re-introduced me to 4chan, and browsed /b/ with me, that I would re-explore 4chan and start me on a path of using it relatively often.
At some point in my life, the first thing I would do every day was get on 4chan; now that I think of it, I think I've been browsing 4chan everyday for years now, with few days off. I haven't always 4chaned so much, but it's been like this in the past.

the main differences between 2005 /b/ (when i started lurking) and now are that back then, it wasn't a predictable list of the same fucking threads every day. Yes there were some threads that seemed to always be around like that fucking cat and all that... but not to the extent that it is now.

nowadays you can expect, at ANY time of day, to see the same threads: rekt, ylyl, r8 my dick, etc. i think r8 my dick is one of the worst considering old /b/. old /b/ had one dick and it had blue hair drawn on it in ms paint.

the other thing was that half to 3/4 of all posts on /b/ were telling people to lurk moar. nowadays kids get on /b/ and go OMG LOL GONNA POST XD and i guess there's just too many to tell them all to stfu and lurk moar. If you didn't get a... "meme," or understand a humorous thread, or ... well really anything, you'd be told to lurk more (sorry, can't stand spelling it moar anymore). that meant don't just come on and start spewing bullshit, take some time and see what's going on, until you can contribute something really funny or at least try ffs. now it's just omg lol is this funny? or "lol rate me /b/"

Back in 04/05 internet was still not a basic utility, it was still a slight privilege, mostly DSL connections and not that many had access.

Those who had access, few knew about 4chan, it was mostly curious, younger people, from the 80s/90s, its a culture that is gone.
