Are there any /b/tards who were or currently are in the military? What country/branch do you serve in? Do you regret joining or would you do it again?

I can't serve in my country because of terrible eyesight, (vision tests are mandatory even for non-combat roles), and when I was a kid it was kind of a dream of mine to join the air force.

German military, 8 years now.
Spent more then 2 years in Afghanistan, good money, couple good memories, a lot more bad memories and a mild PTSD.

Army here. Still in. Was worth joining.
Pros:
-was engaged to a cunt who cheated, stole my $, and claimed i raped her or a friend.
-now that im free of her I went from 4 partners to over 30. Dog tags drop panties.
-trained to be a killer
-good benefits
-difference in attitude and drive

Cons:
-hurry up and wait
-bull shit officers
-bull shit rules of engagement
-bull shit pc bull shit. somehow girls want to fulfill all the same roles while an 18 yr old girl has to meet the standard of a 59 yr old man. and they like to scream sexual harassment over everything ruining careers

In my country there's a dengue epidemic every year during the rainy season when the mosquito breeds. The government keeps saying they can't do much about it because there's no known vaccine or remedy for it.
Either my government is lying to me or the US Navy is to you.

I agree there are some people who shouldn't be in and cant fight at all. and they let a lot of fatfucks continue to stay in. Most of the women Id say shouldn't be front line combat. but there is a few I would totally support.

Was USAF. 3C0X2 then 3D0X4 after the comm career got fucked with. Programmer either way. Single duty station for all 6 years I was in. No TDY, No Deployments. Felt like a corporate job where I didn't have to think about what I was wearing. Good experience, above average from what I've heard. Leadership is comprised of those that didn't get a better opportunity elsewhere at least where I was. Glad I got out though. Trained in programming with no college debt.

I'm looking to earn a commission with the United States Air Force or the Navy. I'm interested in Intelligence, Public Affairs, Security Forces, or anything else engaging that will let me travel. For Navy I'm interested in becoming Surface Warfare Officer. I'm overweight and the recruiters won't talk to me until I get down to the qualifying weight, but aside from some DQ'ing factors I may have to fudge to get through MEPS I think I have a good shot. Any advice about the USAF or Navy in general?
>>
>>688565630
Height? Fat or at least some muscle?
Anyhow, too fat mate.
Expect to run 15-30 miles with another 60-120lbs equipment on your back. can you do that?
Also, what if you get wounded? do you expect your whole squad to drag you arround if that happens?
>>
>>688566421
no. we get limited slots for the unit for schools.
>>
>>688566219
Nope. Every single one that I've been scheduled to go on either got cancelled or given to another unit.
>>
I've been out of the army for 4 years now. Let me give some of you current queers some advice:

+Have a plan when you get out. Seriously. Get a job lined up, a real one, and make sure it's a secured deal that you have the job once you ETS. Don't get out and chill on money you've saved or whatever. You'll be in trouble.
+Dont make being a veteran your whole life. Civilians find it cool for a while, they may ask some questions or treat you a bit better, but they generally don't give a fuck much past that. Also, they don't *get* the stories and shit, either. We use too many acronyms and use equipment that they've never seen before, much less handled. They cannot understand the stories just through the "language" barrier alone.
+Get your wisdom teeth pulled out before you ETS. Just do it.
>>
>>688566627
I'm 5'3", good amount of muscle
Working on that fat issue
Not in the current shape I'm in, but in the end, yeah I'll be able to
I'm not expecting anybody to drag me around if that happens. If I can't get up to walk on my own when I'm wounded, than I'm better off dead in that moment
>>
>>688567368
Typo. I'm 6'3"

Pay is shit so I don't want to follow a military career when I'm 28+, but I definitely don't regret joining. Learned so much and became a completely different person. I look at my old school friends and I'm glad I chose this life for now.

>>
>>688567561
What exactly do you do? Recon?
>>
>>688567933

Unless you are attached to a Pathfinder Coy you won't be doing any reccy, plus the pay is exactly the same as far as I'm aware so there isn't the incentive to do it.

Beforehand I was just operational intelligence, sending out the Estonians to smash up Helmand cause they didn't have bullshit ROEs, now I'm in Signals Intelligence, completely different field but interesting nonetheless.
>>

IDF. Out now, did my 3 years conscription, then another 3 because fuck it. had no idea what else to do with my time. now i'm in the states.

because there were only 2 or 3 other e4's in our company and we got singled out for "thinking we were hot shit", which of course we didn't but the DS's will fuck with you for anything that stands out. they also know that you have a college degree coming in as an e4 (i'm assuming you have one or prior service) and will probably end up going to OCS so they fuck with you for that too. whatever you do, if you're a 09S, keep that shit quiet as fuck for as long as possible. trust me.

US Navy, 4 years.

I do no regret it. Got me a a trade, work experience, a clearance, a house, and free college/ healthcare, free travel around the world, and friends for life.

My advice if you join: only take a technical MOS/ rate adn try and get a clearance. It is a complete waste of time if you go in and dig shitholes for 4 years. Get into something like IT, Intelligence, electrician, crypto, etc.

Well... there is not that much to tell really.
Had about 23 Combat Situations in which 17 resulted in fire exchanges.
Rekt a few Dingos [german equivalent to HMMW] and got shot in the shoulder once.

We have conscription so I pretty much had to go to the military.

Served in a navy branch which specialized in ship boarding and other marine spec ops shit.

Was really cool and tried to get into peace keeping but no dice.

It was easy living there for a year but I don't really long for it. Especially since we don't get payed well when conscripted and then wanted to get on with my life so I didn't stay in the military.

Who would've thought sitting on my ass collecting a big check would've been so detrimental to my mental health? But I was a basket case and and so were many others.

I got out after 6. Now I'm 2 months into the fire academy of the city I've always wanted to work for. Some good came put of the military but the rest, I never look back on. Fire is where I've always belonged. Fuck the USAF.
>>
I'm going into the air force with an open electrical contract, what are the real chances of getting he job i want?(IT)
>>
>>688575020
Physically and mentally.

We had some pretty rough physical exams which you could pass if you had a good overall physique, but the worst were the mental ones, like being dropped into ocean in army greens in February (Finnish February) and staying there for good 5-6 mins until hypothermia kicks in and do some shit after that.

Some of the neat shit were boarding and clearing a cruise ship and getting to shoot all kinds of weapons.

>>688575939
Some Finnish military branches have this but it is not talked about because it is illegal to torture anyone, and we have conscription mind you so some people WILL go through that involuntarily. It is not as severe tho if you say that you don't want the rought treatment but I've heard some pretty HC stories if you say that you are up for it.

If your vision is correctable to 20/20 you're good to go.
Military is what you make of it. I'm about to get out of the US Army after 3 years of being an 88M.
Deployment was the only time I really felt like I was getting what I wanted out of the experience. Different environment, different worries, and when you go outside the wire the stupid bullshit gets thrown away and you can concentrate on what's real.
Aside from that, stateside is basically waiting for no reason, taking classes so you don't rape anyone, and watching grown ass men stab eachother in the back and suck dick to try and get a premotion.
I'd rate it a 6/10.
But the Post 9/11 GI Bill is pretty badass, and my home state will pay for the next 125 credits after that runs out... so I've got that and a free class A CDL going for me, which is nice
Would have rated 7/10 if it wasn't for NTC.
>>
>>688582821
I get the serious incident reports all the time, and the blotter. Why are 88Ms so fucking felonious? They're always getting trouble. Almost more than the grunts.
>>
>>688582820
Also I fucking hate you. Got a 93 overall and a 127 gt but I'm colorblind so they only offered me 3 jobs. MP, 88M, or be the guy that sits in the box truck doing calculations for artillery

Dunno, we'be had 3 DUI's, 8 major SHARP incidents, and our 1SG married a SSG in our company while he was in command. Seems like 88s like to do stupid shit like throw people through the wall in the barracks.
Also because trucks go boom often

>>
>>688583615
Let me bounce this theory off of you. I think it's because 88M is an MOS that you can get with a low ASVAB. So all the dumb poors pick it as the best of other shit options. Not saying all 88Ms are fucking retards, but there are a lot of fucking retards in transpo

That's unfortunate friend. Can't say the same for you because of the colorblindness, but I went in with a plan; I've wanted to work for NASA since I was 10 and this was the easiest and most profitable route. The military was but a stepping stone, once I got out I've never looked back or associated myself with it.

On a finny side note, all my coworkers still think I wasted thousands of dollars on a degree, and I make more then all of them, kek.

No. AF would find a way to suck the life out of that too. I'm much better off in the civilian sector.

Besides fire on base with military, contract or federal fire don't do shit all day besides standby on the tarmacs. I'll take a bit of a pay cut to go see some action.

Military benefits? Yes.
Can't get a security clearance till you get citizenship though. Will limit you on job choices, but not much.
As for rights as a US citizen, the military will help you earn your citizenship. I had a troop under me from Mexico that did that.
>>
>>688587320
To get a clearance, you'll also have to renounce citizenship to the shithole country in which you really belong.
>>688586886
>>
>>688587005
Background check should only show criminal offences as far as I know.
Were you charged when this happened?
>>

>>
>>688587598
Background check will, but if he goes for a clearance and doesn't disclose the info, he's fucking hosed.
>>
Just a general question: how are your experiences and interactions with civilians after being in the military? Has it changed? Are you "different"? Do civilians just say dumb shit?

Also, how do you feel about guys that live the military 24/7? I know a few guys and all they talk about is military stuff, use acronyms, hate liberals, etc.
>>
>>688583629
isnt that just stress positions tho?
>>
>>688587635
Don't know what a brs is, but I work personnel security in the army. No way will he get a clearance unless he renounces citizenship.

>>
>>688588450
>>688588514
I gave you the wrong impression. I haven't done it; I've only spoken to the cadre and a few people who have gone through it. I have no fucking interest or need to go through SERE.
>>
>>688588786
That's cool, can you share what you heard from them?
>>
>>688588450
Lock you up in a small concrete box in an uncomfortable position. Strip you down and hit you with cold water.

I heard that if you got a female in your class, they tend to target the female as a way to get the males to break to protect that female.
>>
>>688588924
Sleep deprivation and learned helplessness. You can google the last bit and figure it out.
>>
>>688588595

Ok, thanks for the info.
>>
>>688589048
tbh cold water sounds easy, i doubt many guys would break under it. The female thing is badass though, most guys would feel really guilty in that situation and try to spare the girl.

As for cold water...I really fucken hate cold water. That shit would get to me.
>>
>>688589419
I'm not going to expound on this, but I've used cold water to break people. Cold and wet is fucking misery, if you keep it up. I got a lot of information out of people just using cold water. You should not underestimate your body's desire to be rid of the condition.
>>
>>688589837
electric shock would be more efficient
>>
>>688589989
You would think so, but that takes resources and physical touch. Not so, with cold water. I wish you would just take my word on this.
>>
>>688589989
They aren't trying to kill people during SERE though.
Shit happens even with relatively low voltage.

>>

You're wrong, but for a reason you'll probably reject. If you've been through the misery once, you'll be more likely to avoid it again. I know "trust me" isn't enough proof for /b/, but that's all I got.
>>
>>688590177
>>688589989

Stop acting like a tough guy. These instructors are pros at this. They aren't just going to spray you with water. They are alot more creative than that.

I've done some of the physicals on guys returning from SERE. They are pretty fucked up for a bit. Creepy to be around.
>>
>>688590609
what kind of method you could see those guys went through?
>>
>>688590511
I'll spill a little more. I used cold water through the bars of a kennel. That's where we kept them. Near the dogs, which would bark and terrify them. The dogs hated them by smell, I guess. I could use the water and toss it through the bars. No contact. Just questions. No answer? That's fine, motherfucker, see you in about 10 minutes in the summer. In the winter, I didn't have to come back with more water.
>>
>>688590816

Not service related. I just don't go jumping into pools unless they are at least 85. And I was AF not Army, so my ass was taking cold showers.

As for my BF%. Was mainly diet, some cardio. I slacked off in the AF. This civilian fire academy has me eating more and doing a shit ton of cardio now. Harder PT than the AF ever had.

USN, Surface Warfare Officer
Pros: Good pay, learned people/management skills, deployments are long but consistent day to day routine, nice port visits, GI Bill is fully vested for future use

Cons:
Duty: If you plan to go on ship you will stand "duty" aka stay on the ship for 24 hours every 4 to 8 days (depending on how big your ship is, but typical is 5 or 6) and stand watch which is just fucking stupid waste of hours of your life and also applies on the weekend since the ship never closes for business

Stupid admin, 10% of the sailors and officers and maybe closer to 20% are complete fucktards who don't get it and make life miserable for the other 80%

Outside inspectors for training phase is a bitch and half of stupid admin work, training, and evolutions most of which is not applicable on deployment

Overall: Been in for four, will stay 5 or 7 years, learned a lot, saved a bunch of money, but if you are not mentally tough, touchy, or have a family I would not join.
