Can't jail someone with no evidence

Say you're prisoner A. You have two options, confess or not.

If we assume that B confesses, then A either confesses for 5 years imprisonment, or does not confess for 20 years imprisonment. Therefore, A would choose to confess.

If we assume that B remains silent, then A either confesses for 0 years imprisonment, or remains silent for 1 year imprisonment. Again, the correct choice for A is to confess.

So, regardless of which of the two options B chooses, it is better for A to confess, so A will always confess, and vice versa. Thus both prisoners will confess and get 5 years each.

It's a simple game theory question of risk/reward. Applies to pretty much every game you can think of, and it can also apply to business and capitalism.

The player doesn't have all the info. Staying silent is more risky but has a greater potential reward, whereas ratting out your /bro is a bit safer, for a potentially diminished reward.

Look at a video game like Dark Souls for example. You're fighting a boss that only has 2 hits left to beat it. Do you abandon all strategy to run in and beat it? There's a large chance you'll die if you do this, but you could kill the boss sooner. Or you could hang back and wait for the opportunity to strike. Both are valid strategies, each with their own risks and rewards associated with them.
