It's definitely not nostalgia. I have always liked him, but am completely able to separate what he was from what is is, and generally hated his more recent runs.
But as of late he has completely reinvigorated himself as a Heel to one of the more entertaining characters on the show.
In contrast to Dean, who only brings decent promos 50% of the time, and even in Jericho's advanced age, doesn't manage to hold a candle to him in-ring.

Cesaro got in a lot of pop offense, Zayn got the pinfall on Miz.
Miz didn't really do enough of note during the match and Zayn only got killed by a post-match blindside, so he doesn't look weak on that.
