why always with the swords? I'm more interested in a kanabo

According to this

takamura ha shindo yoshin ryu practices testubo, though Ive never seen them publicly discuss it
>>

Well I watched the UWM stuff, and its as bad as everyone says. mildly entertaining, but what sword art teaches you to block blades with your arm? or doesn't count chest blows because "not enough force"

Let me take a shot at your arm or chest with any sharpened blade, and lets see if you feel like continuing?

And thats aside from all the other reservations I have. Did they really need a "I'm so tough/shit talking session before the match?

>>
>>1417230
this shit is just as retarded as I was expecting it to be. Two idiots flailing at each other because there is no real danger. and you mean to tell me a swipe to the front of the head from the tip of a sword is a kill shot but a clean slice across the neck isnt?
>>
>>1417290
OH sure, it take alot of force to cut through flesh you know? just think of the sword as a baseball bat and slam it into the other guy as hard as you can.

Since we started with Threadgill, might as well keep up.

Well he is the leader of that style. His teacher fully licensed three people but two of them retired and gave all authority over to him.

From what Ive seen he is very good, I would really like to see his kenjutsu though.

This certainly wasn't to deride him or doubt his prowess, being the leader of a koryu as a non-japanese isn't always easy, considering how conservative the japanese are. His particular situation was talked about a little in the text and since it's an interesting subject that not a lot of people can adress (considering there may be less than five people who are at this place), I thought about pointing this out that's all.
I certainly didn't want to imply that him being a non-japanese would say something about his ability to lead a koryu. He certainly is talented and have the legitimacy for it, besides it's not like any opinion but the last soke's would matter on that subject... what a soke say about his/her koryu is law and that should be all that matter really.
>>
>>1417939
As far as I know he does not claim the title of soke since he isn't in Japan and soke takes on certain nuisances in Japanese society and law that dont apply to a system that is not there.

Sorry, I can imagine some people impugning his abilities or qualifications since he is a non-Japanese guy living in Colorado
>>
>>1417947
No he doesn't claim the title of soke but of kaicho, my point was that he is up there thanks to the previous soke's will (and well the misfortune of his comrades but) and his abilities obviously.
No need to say sorry, I understand your point and agree with it. I suppose it was bad wording from my part...
>>
>>1417872
In a way its a pity. Its not koryu, but I do enjoy watching good sparring like some hema videos.

unfortunately this shows just about everything that can go wrong when you focus on sparring and sport

So I was thinking of getting together some basic resources like the hema thread has. I have some ideas about links for Japanese swordsmanship, but I have no ideas for FMA or CMA so if anyone practices those and they have sites they want to contribute post them
>>
>>1419394
It's pretty good indeed, I've read and heard the soke of Ono-ha Itto-ryu about shu-ha-ri and he was saying pretty much the same things, the transcription was pretty lousy though, this one is better in that regard.

And yet again another Threadgill thing since we are at it...

Since were speaking of shindo yoshin ryu, what do you think of the late Don angier's style, shidari yanagi ryu? I know alot of people, including threadgill have studied both systems to an extent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvWiYcxTm2A
>>
>>1427276
The problem I see is that this video seems to be the only one showing YSYR, I didn't looked into it that much, but it looks like it's the main piece shown when you talk about this style.

And frankly, there is a lot of "problems" in it. Main things would be that it's a bit unclear what is supposed to be demonstrated, it does seem it's mostly Don Angier fooling around and showing his skills, and there is nothing wrong with that really, but it doesn't give the usual feel that there is in old kenjutsu and koryu practice (YSYR isn't koryu so it shouldn't be surprising for that matter). The ukedashi sometimes has a severe case of just "going dead", standing still, stopping his motions while Angier keep swinging his sword around. Now I know many styles do that but I can't help feeling it's like abandoning zanshin; going for two tempi moves when your opponent just do one tempo has always felt a bit out of place, but then again it might be a specific methodolgy, it's hard to know.
Another problem I have is that Angier isn't the ukedashi as it's usually the case in old styles, which accentuate the whole "sensei's fooling around" impression in the video, it lacks formality to properly judge the style rather than the practitioner.
It looks like a solid dose of aikido (which Angier was very proeficient at) is instilled in the practice. In fact, I think the taijutsu is the better part, it seems to be a very well put aikido-like demo. I'm not that impressed by the kenjutsu and knife work, as most of it looks like fooling around, or demonstrating a particular point which doesn't render a lot on video. The knife work seems fairly lifeless to me.

Then again, it's hard to judge one video, especially as it doesn't seem to be an easily readable one. Don Angier is very well regarded and there is no reason to doubt his skills, it's just hard to separate the style from him as it looks like he's the only one who displayed it.
>>
>>1427276
Oh and here's a pretty good talk about it with Threadgill and Chouinard among others.

The sport is in its infancy. Given time, I think it'll grow to something more sophisticated and realistic.

Maybe not...but hopefully. I want to believe, so I'm gonna my to support it.
>>
>>1429687
Well a few points, its not unusual for the teacher to be shidachi in demos. Also Ive never heard of Angier training in any style of aikido, I know he did some Chinese stuff though.

They also appear to be demonstrations rather than normal training, so its not too weird that the tempo could be changed for the sake of demonstration.

I was going to post this >>1429691
myself. I think Threadgill offers a very strong defense of his old teacher

Perhaps, but there would have to be rule changes, and you must forgive us but most people who train japanese swordsmanship (except for kendo) are not doing it for sport, sparring is one thing, but turning it into a tournament is something else.

For instance amdur once said of sword sparring you should never spar so much that you get use to the rules.

Not only are they going to do this, but their rule set is very flawed compared to many systems.

>>1429687
There are some videos of his students, though they formed a separate organization since Angier did not want his art practiced outside his personal dojo. That seems strange, but in a way its actually traditional and more like how things were done before koryu were koryu

where can i get a decently historically accurate and properly shaped tachi, without sacrificing an arm and a leg? i've seen some on ebay recently but.. ebay swords, i dunno
>>
>>1449367
If been wondering if i should buy something from here for a while http://www.aliexpress.com/store/726411

Also considering asking them for sparring blunts since i'd like to try Japanese style swords and i do HEMA.
>>
>>1449381
>http://www.aliexpress.com/store/726411
i'd really like a 30~ inch version of this.. but i have no idea how good these really are

another thought i had recently was, if aikuchi/tsubaless swords are maybe a bit better for some things? with european longsword, i know there's a cut where you have your right hand backside down with a thumb on the side of the blade, don't know the particular name for it but im sure there is one, and ive wanted to try doing that with a tsubaless tachi.

still a little dubious on the defensive purpose of the tsuba, i think id rather have the utility of more ways to cut than a liiittle more protection

>>1449388
It prevents your hands sliding up or the opponent's blade sliding down. Also adds some weight near the handle which matters for handling.

The sliding problem does matter, though possibly less with the Japanese style handles (at least the later ones, not sure about tachi). I had my hand slide halfway up the blade doing Viking Age reenactment combat with a longseax with a bare wood handle on a thrust.
>>
>>1449367
Dont know where you can specifically get a tachi, at least not without putting money into custom mountings, which can get expensive

>>1449381
Never heard of that store so I would be wary of

Whose the manufacturer? the phrase "battle ready" is more than enough to make me skeptical.

So many cheap katana are absolute crap. Its easy to hammer out a katana shaped blade with cheap fittings, its another thing to make one that does not feel like a bar of steel in your hand. That said there are options with a good rep.
>>
>>1449772
i THINK the forge might be huawei? but i'm not sure
there are a few certain ebay vendors who seem to sell swords by the same forge

as far as feeling like an actual sword, i dont know how great that one is, but it looks really nice at least.. id love an accurate heian era tachi reproduction

hanwei I think has a decent reputation, as does bugei trading

Found some reviews, seems they're quite decent for what they cost. Obviously still made in China, far from top of the line.

Because of the mind states and adrenaline, people can get shot but still fight on. It's not too far fetched that people would get stabbed or cut but still fight on.

It gets a lot of crap on how ineffective/impractical it is but results says otherwise. The parts of the Philippines where this art was majorly practiced wasn't conquered by outsiders. And it helped a lot when they were trying to repel japanese soldiers. It was so effective that allied soldiers used it as well.
>>
>>1458400
It's suppose to represent unarmored fighting though.
The fact that they can't count draw cuts / push cuts makes it mostly a bashing contest that can't represent well edged weapons.
>>
>>1458392
if a blade pushes against your neck, your in a lot more trouble than a superficial cut.

in some cases they were getting all kinds of low pressure cuts which would have left serious wounds.

Even if these cuts would not finish someone off, the threat of a live blade would make people react very differently. Look at the machete video, those guys stay out of range and make deep lunges into the other guys zone, withdrawing when they miss....because they dont want to be cut!

>>1458384
Its a sport, thats the problem. its not a fight with edged weapons, nor is it effective training for a fight with edged weapons
