New inline thread

Let's keep the jet set alive

http://jetsetradio.live/

>I'm interested in picking up some skates, what do I do?

Look into what kind of skates you want exactly, the different categories right now are

Recreational - just cruising around town with your wife and kids

Speed - no tricks or maneuverability, just gotta go fast

Aggressive - best used in skate parks and at skate spots. can't get yourself around town too well, but if you want to shred like a cool kid, these are for you.

Urban/freeskate - newest category, sort of combines recreational and aggressive. You can go fast and maneuver well in cities, but they are sturdy enough to handle some tricks and gaps. Main difference between urban and freeskate is urban skates will have a soulplate so you can do grinds, but they are typically a little slower

>how can I get good?

practice and watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8Gs_eyIPFA

I would post a list of websites to buy skates but I only really know about Inlineskates.com, and that's based in America.

Sorry if my op is shitty

Get a pair of Valos, it's a brand that makes aggressive skates that have skins over a plastic shell.

If you want to go fast, get some Swiss bearings for your wheels, and skate a flat setup (four wheels on each skate).

This. Valo for sure most effay

If you're gonna be doing tricks you don't really want too much flexibility. You'll break your ankle.
>>
>>1295490
Plastic still flexes, and like others have said, having good support is necessary for control when skating.

Also, focus more about your flexibility (as in bending your knees, squatting, having a good stance and form while you skate) instead of what the skate can do.
>>
>>1299777
Yeah I'm just sticking to cruising around so I need that flex to get around

If you are going the Seba route as a beginner, get the FRX or FR2. You will not see much benefit as a beginner by getting the more expensive FR1, but yes, they are good beginner skates.

I can list other brands, but I don't know what your preferences are.

>>1305128
Apples or oranges man. I think the Razors are the more stiffer of the two. Valo's cost less and are a tighter fit

idk flip a coin or find what your preferences are in a skate. If its your first skate, you can't go wrong with either of the two
>>
>>1305239
That would be nice I'm looking for something casual for riding around not gonna do tricks or anything special also something possibly slick and nice looking (trying to keep it below 200 if that's possible) Thanks!
>>
>>1305252
Here are some good skates around or under 200. I'm going to omit "recreational" types of skates simply because there to many of them to list. Most of these are hard-boots.

5th Element ST-80 (~$99) Killer price, but strangely comes with a rockered frame. So its not really good for beginners or any distance skating.
Roces Veni (~139)
Fila Skates NRK Fun (~149)
K2 Midtown (~$179) My favorites
Rollerblade RB 80 (~$179)
Powerslide Khaan (~179)
Doop Urban (~179)
Seba FRX80 (~179)
Rollerblade Fusion X3 (~$199)
Flying Eagle F6 Falcons (~$199)
Powerslide Imperial One80 (~$199)
Doop Classic Red (~$199)
Seba FR2 80 (~$210)
Rollerblade Twister 231 (~$220)
Rollerblade Twister 80 (~$230)
K2 Uptown (~$240) My favorites
Roces X35 (~$250)

Don't know what slick and nice looking means to you but here you go. There might be more or less options to choose from depending on were you live.
>>

Whats you guys biggest inline injuries?

List:

14: ripped my left leg pretty hard after failing a drop in a slope, bled quite a lot but a lot of banding/pressure made it stop

16: failed 3m pyramid gap, thanks to god i didn't broke anything but i managed to break the bigg ass screw who fixed the plate from my first pair of skate.

Now i'm 19 and i can't really skate anymore as i loose balance waaaaayy easier than before, i also don't want to break an ankle or my wrist these days as they already took quite some strain over these years.

Advice to all inline skatters, if you break your wrist, even once!
It's gonna break a hell lot more easily the second time, so wear your protections.

This. It's still not a guarantee though. I often fall on my thumb, pretty uncomfortable. Pain is not too heavy, but lasts too long after touching the injured finger.

I saw videos with skating on stuff like this.
It's impossible to make a push to skate faster while wheels are spinning, so it's pretty useless.

Also found another prototype kinda related to AG/JSR. Some russian dude made this frame on 3D printer, grindable as he said.

The arrows are an indestructible, responsive frame . Though the plastics sliders bulge out a bit to much and can cause awkward grind locks, especially with smaller soulplates.

>been skating for almost a year (to be fair, i skate once a week)
>can't jump high

So I'm a pretty good skier and I haven't be on a pair of skates since I was twelve.

And I've recently realised I'm never going to be rich enough to afford to go skiing whenever I want.

So I got a skateboard, and it's fun, but it is just a completely different feeling and body setup.
I'm wondering if inline better recreates the feeling you get from skiing (and if I might be better at it considering I was a fairly good park skier)

Should I get some skates? How long does it take to progress generally?
>>
>>1334929
I'm no skier, but i can confidentially say that inlines skates are the only closest (and generally cheaper) substitute to skiing. Their are even some skiers that use it as a way to keep muscle memory during the off season. There are also inline skaters who also ski as well. For example, slaloming down a hill with inline skates is very similar to what skis do, but it is different approach for each.

If you a good skier, then you most likely learn how to maneuver in inlines relatively quickly than compared to a compete newbie. Skating for 2-3 hours at least for 2-3 days a week, you will probably be a confident skater in 1 or 2 months. But of course, this is all assumption on my part.

If you are planing to buy some skates that closets recreate the feeling of skies, make sure to get skates that come with wheels sizes of 90mm-110mm since those have a larger wheel base length and speed. Most skates come with 80mm wheels or below like >>1291791, which wont go past your front foot if your feet is bigger that a size 9 US. This is fine for most inline skaters, but for a skier it going to feel alien since they wont have that front and rear and leverage they would have on skies. So skates with larger frame lengths will help with this.

If that's the route you want, I can give you some recommendations.
Video of an aggressive skaters that has been influence by skiing, as an example of what am talking about.

So, they're pretty good, especially in the looks departement. They roll pretty smooth and quiet. My seba's were loud as fuck in the beginning. They're also very light and responsive and quite comfy although my ankles hurt a tad whenever I put them on. It goes away after a minute of skating tho. Also, it's kinda difficult to take them off. I have to pull really hard and usually take the liner out.

Today I just witness a skateboarder get absolutely snaked by some hypebeast scooter dude, who got a pretty bad head injury and needed the paramedics to get him.

Just as I was going to leave for the day, some scooter dude was doing some really high transfers over the quarterpipes not giving a fuck or looking ahead of him. He stopped to talk to some of his bmx friends and again proceeded to do high quarter transfers, and again, not looking ahead of him. Then he snaked the skateboarder who was doing some really fast grinds on the coping, or was just going really fast around the quarter (I couldn't really tell). Either way, both of them were going really fast and collided at the bottom of the quarter. Both took a hard tumble and the skateboarder smacked the back of his head on the quarter (which was made of concrete), the scooter dude turn out fine.

The skateboarder was clearly knocked out and was unresponsive for about 30 seconds and then started to hyperventilate and moan/cry. Scooter dude proceed look over him, asking him if he was alright. One of the bmx dudes (most of the people had left the skatepark for the day) came over to lift his head up so that blood (which was starting to drip down onto the concrete) would not accumulate in the back of his head. They also gave him water. I don't know if that actually helped but at least it was something. A small group formed around him and eventually he was responsive again, although very out of it. He was able to talk, stand, and walk. After a while security call the paramedics to get him. He was sent off in a stretcher. I think the scooter dude took a picture of the blood that was on the ground (probably to post it in social media), but maybe I was seeing things. Both dudes were in their late teen-early twenties.

damn. yea those skooter kids suck. they make me realize skaterboarders arent really that bad even though weve been enemies in the past.

the way skooter-kids are always doing backflips and mistyflips blows my mind. the fact they have so few tricks and just end up flipping all the time because of it is so dangerous.

at our local park we have a 5 foot cement bowl with 6 foot corner... one day this skooter kid was riding the bowl with his friend and a chubby girl who was filming from the deck. he was throwing misty flips in the corner every time. no helmet. but he seemed to have them on lock.

I was sitting on the deck too watching. well all of a sudden, one of them went wrong. he basically just lost his inertia mid flip, LITERALLY UPSIDE DOWN and just came straight down on his head, skooter and feet pointing up at the sky like a cartoon.

I've never seen anything like it and ive been going to parks my whole life. he came straight down on his head vertically. the chubby girl filming and his friend just looked away, embarrassed probably, and then walked away to the other side of the park. didnt give a fuck at all!!!! i jumped in after he came to a good minute later and was on his feet and helped him get out of the bowl. he had to have been concussed, im suprised he didnt break his neck and die. it was a slam like literally nothing ive ever seen before

a few months later I saw him again at the park and asked him how he was doing. he just played it off and said it was no big deal. I was genuinely concerned about him but he was back to doing flips.... smdh... skooters are retarded at least when youre flipping on skates you have your hands free if you need to abort, they just have to grip the scooter in deaths embrace
>>
>>1343827
I really have no beef with scooters and I really have no choice but make friends with some of them since there are so many. But fuck me do the young ones always get in the way every fucking time.

Some of them have really developed the really nasty, stuck up attitude and try to look hard. Mainly because they think they need to look cool to justify their sport, since they are always trashed on by skateboarders (Kinda like us in the early to mid 2000s when we were picked on).
But for the most part, the ones that I know are really laid back and are funny as shit. They are regulars at the skatepark and are pretty skilled, and are generally not assholes (though they like to have some friendly occasional banter, which is fun).

But there is always that one scooter kid that thinks he's hot shit and kinda ruins the fun for everybody. Like the hyper beast scooter dude that hurt the skateboarder. It was the first I've seen him at the park and was giving no one room or respect to ride around even when there was so few riders at the time.

But on a brighter note, think i got my Mizous on lock and my Torques are starting to feel good to. So satisfying. Learing how to do pornstars and makio coping stalls on the quarter cleanly, but it's pretty hard since my park only has square ledges to really grind on. But really do feel like i'm progressing which is awesome.
>>
>>1335090
Thanks for the detailed reply man!
Gonna be getting a pair when I get my new job (hopefully).

Any advice on progression?
Or just to start jumping on flat bars when I feel confident enough?
>>
>>1331638
For grinds, practice by stepping onto and off of curbs or low ledges. Progress to jumping onto them in different grind positions, then stepping on while moving. There's not much to it, the biggest factors are getting rid of fear followed by muscle memory. Shit only gets real when you wanna learn 360s+ into grinds. Half cab grinds are tricky on higher rails and ledges too.

Rails are a bit more awkward in general, you have to balance right on top of them unlike a ledge where there's a bit more leeway.

An anon above mentioned to wear pads when injured. I highly agree (my own wrist is injured atm, wearing wrist guard til it recovers), but my own rule is absolutely ONLY when injured or when trying crazy vert stuff. Learning tricks without pads increases your confidence much more, I'd recommend you do so when possible.

Also a side note, unless those inner wheels on your frames are super hard (like 99a+, they look like regular wheels) you'll have loads of trouble learning grinds on them. You will DIE to wheel bite.

Can't give any advice on slides. I've no desire to learn any of the slides you see people doing competitions with, I only wanna learn cess slides (a scary experience so far).

Overall just try skate more often and try do harder things each session you go out.

First get a helmet at least, you don't to be caught without one if you slip right off your feet suddenly and land right on your back and bash your head. Really get a feel for moving around in skates. Learn how to transition into fakie (both turning in left and right) smoothly at moderate speeds at least. Learn how to turn quickly and stop quickly. Don't do anything crazy for the first few weeks. Learn how to stay and accelerate in fakie confidently. Lean how to go up and down any incline forward and fakie. Learn to jump up on curbs and to small jump off of them, again, both forward and fakie. You will learn other small things along the way by experience and by watching others skate.

Basically try to learn everything there is to learn on ground first. Throw in some wheelies/heelies for a challenge. You don't want to be caught losing control on flat ground. Also learn how to fall, DO NOT LAND ON YOUR WRISTS IF POSSIBLE. Land on your ass or throw yourself into a roll. Ass pads can help with this. Also don't force yourself to skate if you body is simply to tired or really sore. You are going to get hurt. Eat well, sleep well, and try again another day.

Then once you feel really confident rolling in all directions at moderately high speeds and your muscles have adjusted, you can start hitting ramps, rails, and ledges.Buy proper grinding skates for that kind of stuff.

And most of all, have fun anon.

You need to skate every single day. You will never progress skating once a week.

It didnt die at all, not even a little. If anything its grown. Its just not in the spotlight because most kiddos think fun is trying to land a 360 flip for 8 hours straight

This is the one thing that drives me mad about skateboarding. I do it too but much less than blading, I'm fucking shit on a board in comparison. But grinding flip tricks in your beginner stages is maddening and boring. I have loads of respect to those who stick it out and get really good at skateboarding, it has a higher learning curve than blading at the start. But being able to grind everything or just skate the various parts of the park fluid as fuck on inline is way more fun to me. Maybe it's why kids especially can get really good at skateboarding, less awareness of monotony combined with ignorant lack of fear.

to the few skateboarders who shitposted in this thread, if you're any good at skating: good job.
