An argument can be made that they haven't been keeping their casual audience interested.
Let's face it, us smarks and anti-smarks will probably keep watching for a long time. But the casuals, the normies, they won't. They have other shows like Game of Thrones or whatever sporting show is on to watch instead.
So the goal is to make the show interesting enough to keep them around. But for over the last year, it's been pretty much dominated by Roman Reigns, and has gotten to the point where the crowd is full out revolting against him. Any casual who didn't like Roman, only to see him consistently get pushed, would get bored and stop watching.
Alternatively, anyone who liked Dean, and watched only to see him NOT get pushed and beaten a lot, would get bored and leave.
Roman is the face of the company. It's up to him to put butts into seats, and make people tune in.
