Sup /asp/ies. I'm interested in starting MMA or Muay Thai or some full contact martial art, but I'm not very fit right now. Would it be fine if I went to classes right off the bat or should I become moderately in shape before starting? Pic unrelated.

Go to classes.
>>
>>1350427
If you have money, you should go straight to classes because it's a more fun way to exercise even though you probably won't be able to keep up with the pace.

If you don't have money, because you'll be so tired during class because you'll be out of shape if you start martial arts and therefore won't be able to get the most skill out of your money, you should just job around the street and do bodyweight exercises at home.
Depending on the payment, you might be allowed to go to all 5 of the classes a week but only be fit enough to go to 2 of the classes a week.

Overworking your body is not good.

Even if you can fight through the pain to go to class every day, it's bad for your health.

If your muscles are stiff, take at least a day for recovery.
>>
You get in shape for the classes by going to the classes.

The longer you wait to start going to a martial arts gym the more time you could have spent conditioning your body specifically for that martial arts.

I could be f****** awesome at CrossFit, but the six months I spent doing that in preparation for boxing conditioning could have been spent on specifically boxing conditioning.
>>
>>1350483
Exactly this. You'll get in shape by showing up to class AND learn whatever martial art you want to learn, as opposed to getting in shape on your own. You don't need to become easily malleable in order for the martial arts to shape you.
>>
>>1350427
Yep. Go straight to classes.

Classes will get you in shape, and the sooner you start, the better.

Even if you can't finish a class, that's fine.
>>
>>1351142
>Even if you can't finish a class, that's fine.
Except for when you saved up for a year for 6 months of classes and only end up going twice a week, and then have to wait a whole year to be able to afford 6 more months of classes.

While the alternative is just taking 2months, which is about 8 weeks, doing general cardio and strength training, for free.
In which you could go 3 or even 4 days a week without overtaxing you body.

>Except for when you saved up for a year for 6 months of classes and only end up going twice a week, and then have to wait a whole year to be able to afford 6 more months of classes.

What are you talking about? A good gym shouldn't charge you for that kind of commitment.

When you're poor and out of shape, going straight to class is fucking stupid.

If you're obese, you should be swimming, martial arts is out of the question unless you want joint problems, and then chronic joint problems later on. Not to mention how the intensity of combat sports could overwork your heart and give you a heart attack. Have fun with early fucking death.

If you're fat, like you're more than chubby, you should spend about 1 month working up to lower-moderate exercise, and then spend another month with moderate exercise while working up intensity. Cardio, cardio, cardio.
Too high an intensity could stress your joints too much. You're also likely to get delayed onset muscle soreness in the beginning if you don't take it easy at first. DOMS is all bad, don't overwork your muscles, it's stupid, you could also accidentally overwork your heart.

If you're chubby, 1 DEDICATED month should do the trick. But even after you join, you need to make sure you don't over work yourself and work within your abilities.

Even if you're skinny or skinny-fat, but you haven't been active, take a month to exercise.

It's plain stupid to jump right into something like martial arts, all while paying money for it, when you could've just spent an hour every day, every other day, for 4 weeks.

If you're chubby and haven't exercised much in a year, a dedicated month before training, you can make it so you get twice the martial arts skill out of your first month, as apposed to just jumping in.

If you can only do 5 pushups, doing 50 will just fuck up your muscles and can leave your muscles in pain and stiff for more than a week.

Is that a dude?

Some people are the oldest of 3 siblings, with a mother working 2 jobs, and a father that left a long time ago. Some who had to get their GED and start working a full time job so brother and sister wouldn't have to go to a foster family, so mommy could pay the bills. Someone who had to do that for 2 years before mommy found a better job. Someone who now doesn't have to work overtime anymore, but still works to help mom so brother and sister can get a good education, so he can help them with their homework, and pay for half the price of groceries get good nutrition, so they don't have to struggle not to starve if he just left.
Someone who thinks it's more important to take his family out to eat at a place like Denny's once or twice a month, than it is put all of that money into personal martial arts gear and joining a gym.

lmao your mom watching you post?
>>
>>1350427
how out of shape are you? If you're obese or auschwitz then you should probably try and get a bit fitter, or you're not going to be able to keep up with the training
>>
>>1350427
If you're obese or have any other health issues, get fit first. Otherwise, just go to class.
>>
>>1351481
Nope, using voice to text on phone

>>1351520
While in general I agree, don't you think a good coach would tailor his training a little for his general level of fitness?
>>
>>1351222
Shut the fuck up you faggot no one cares about your dumb autistic rant.
>>1350427
Anyway OP just go straight to your gym. They're full of plenty of out of shape people and you'll get in shape far easier than taking months of arbitrary "preparation." However it's always a good idea to consult a doctor just to make sure you don't have any weird health shit before you step on the mat.
>>
>>1351906
Shut the fuck up with your stupid bullshit when you don't know shit about what the fuck you're talking about retard.

>you'll get in shape far easier than taking months of arbitrary "preparation."
You'll also be throwing away your fucking money.
If you pulled a Wu and live off of your dead grandfather's inheritance or some shit, sure, go ahead, there's plenty of where that came from.

Yes. OP here, still checking in, thanks for all your input here.
>>
>>1352289
What the fuck do you suggest then? That OP just waits forever to get into a sport and then realizes that all of this time could have been spent getting better instead of making stupid excuses about his physical condition when I've seen fatter and sloppier motherfuckers turn into beasts by just showing up? The bare minimum effort at first is just showing up.

>What the fuck do you suggest then?
If he has money go ahead.

If he's obese, consult a doctor.

If he's fat and not fit, consult a doctor, and take about 2 months to exercise or more according to what the doctor says.

If he's just not fit or is chubby, take a month off to exercise.

Let's say classes are $100 dollars a month.
You are not fit and could use about a month of exercise. Because you're not fit, every time you go to class, you're exhausted after warming up. After warm up, you partner up and do pad work. Because you're so tired and your body is so slow and unresponsive, you barely improve your technique. You're so tired, you can't hold the pad when it's your partner's turn to hold the pads, and sit down. You take 5min and are still tired and exhausted, but you get back in and hold the pads for your partner so he doesn't have to work with another group. You get tired holding the pads, and you have to sit down for the rest of the pad session and don't learn all the other things they were working on. It's time for striking sparring, and you have your breath back. You spar, and you lose your breath 1min in, while your partner was going easy on you. You manage to put all you had into finishing the other minute of the 2 minute round. You have to sit down while people switch partners for 2 more rounds. It's time for grappling, and you don't last a single minute.
You go home, and you have to take 2 days before you go back. You only go once more that week when they have classes every single day.
You only go twice a week the next week.
On your 3rd week, you manage to go 3 times a week. On your 4th week, you have an easier time in class but still only went 3 times a week.

You paid $100 for 10 classes, you can barely afford that shit in the first place. You only learned a fraction of each class.

You could've paid $100 for 30 classes, which is 3 times more than 10 classes, if you were fit.
>>
>>1353034
>>1353085

If you took a completely free month to exercise instead of being a stupid mother fucker, you still pay $100 dollars for your first month. But for that $100 dollars, every class, you actually learn something and you actually get to practice what you learned.
You go 4 times a week your first week by pushing yourself. The next week, you go 5 times a week. The 3rd week, you go 5 times a week gain. The 4th week, you go 6 times.
You paid $100, and you got 20 classes. Not only did you get 20 classes, you didn't feel like shit during your recover days, and you actually learned something every single class.
>>
>>1353034
>>1353085
>>1353097
And $100 a month is generous. The lowest I ever saw MMA was $120 a month and I've seen MMA cost more than $250 a month.

Cuute, would fornicate with.
