How do I get started?

I'm a pretty average guy but got some half-decent skills in different sports like skateboarding, football and MMA. Want to try something new.

Also general parkour, freerunning and tricking thread.
>>
Have you tried meetup.com to find any traceurs/freerunners practicing near you?
>>
There're a lot of vaults, and a lot of vault tutorials.
Here's one:

What's often not mentioned as much is general running, sprinting, and free climbing.

These are mentioned more, but the other more flashy moves often get more attention: standing long jump (precision jump), and long jump.

FreeRunning and Tricking included?
They have some ties with gymnastics.

Cartwheels, handspring, general tumbling, you could use those as a basis for side flips, back flips, etcetera, helps you develop some basic aerial body awareness.

So, my left knee has stability issues. Specifically, I develop a slight limp if I walk on it all day, and if I run, once in a while it will bend more than I intend it to, causing me to feel like it's about to give and I'm going to fall down. The one time it actually did give in entirely and I ate it, hard, was when I'd been on it all day and I hopped down off a chest-height ledge which I know would have been fine earlier in the day.

Am I just never going to be able to do parkour because of that knee? Will a brace help? Can I just favor one leg on landings?

>Am I just never going to be able to do parkour because of that knee?
Sounds like you'd have to keep the sessions pretty short and or light.

>Will a brace help?
I guess, even with a brace, I'd recommend going short and or light, though.

>Can I just favor one leg on landings?
You probably should, to an extent, but I don't think 10ft+ drops are really your thing.

Here's a video on "Lowline" movement, might be something you could be interested in.
Supposedly, lowline movement is about maintaining the most control over your momentum and trajectory, while creating the least impact possible.

Makes sense. Probably not as fast, but I'd imagine she's right that it's stealthier. Thanks.

Yeah, I thought I should start with some basic parkour moves to get the feel for that jumping stuff. Don't know if that's the best idea but it makes sense to me.
>>
I got sent to here from /fit/.

I'm kind of tempted to start, because I'm slowly losing weight and getting fitter, but I have no idea if there's anyone else near me who does it. There's like a gymnastics mob in my town, but I think it's more for kids than anything else.

Might still take a look. Also good just go off YouTube tutorials and take it slow.

Try to find other people who are interested, even if you don't find anyone who already does it. Company makes most things far more fun, and you can keep each other motivated.

My campus is closed for spring break and since their gym has a pull up for me to practice muscle up on, I can't do it. Are muscle ups on the bar easier than flat rooftops like pic related? I started dping muscle ups 4 days ago

What are some exercises that i can do in my home to get in shape and practice a bit? Besides rolling and maybe jumping, that is.

Vault over your couch, quadrupedal movement across the floor and down the stairs, practice your rolls and breakfalls, do doorframe pullups, etc. If you can into >>>/diy/, you might find some neat ideas here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/STURDYmade
http://wiki.parkourvisions.org/build
and on Facebook, /groups/sturdymade/

The Bodyweight General thread might have some good pointers for you, too, if you want a gymnastic fitness routine. >>956039

Kill me if I'm wrong, but isn't it almost the same?

Parkour -> use surroundings to move fast from A to B
Freerunning -> same but not fast, aesthetic instead
>>
>>1085609
>almost the same
The devil is in the details: there's a difference in core philosophy that you've spotted yourself.

Parkour is about efficiency: get from A to B as efficiently as possible. The beauty is in its minimalism and pragmatism.

Freerunning is about individual expression: get from A to B as impressively as possible. The beauty is in its showmanship and flair.

The difference between parkour and freerunning is the difference between self-defense judo and demonstration aikido.

Oh well.

Let's start with Francisco Amorós, who was born in 1770. He created a gymnstic approach, written down in his book "Nouveau Manuel Complet d'Education Physique, Gymnastique et Morale". Between 1817 and 1837 he trained hundreds of military physical instructors and firefighters.

Based on this another guy called Georges Hébert develloped his own system called "L’Education Physique, Virile et Morale par la Methode Naturelle" (a.k.a. "Methode Naturelle"). It included walking, running, jumping, quadrupedal movement, climbing, balancing, throwing, lifting, self-defense and swimming and became popular in military training for french forces in WW1 and WW2.

In 1939 another guy was born: Raymond Belle. He grew up in a military orphanage where he studied the "Methode Naturelle", climbed trees and trained like a maniac to get better at evasion and escape. Eventully he develloped his own system "le parcours" which was all about getting from A to B as fast as possible, but more about moving in the jungle than in the city.

Raymond's son David Belle took his fathers methods and develloped "parcour", less warfare and evasion, more about urban activities.

A friend of David Belle, Sébastien Foucan, called his style of parcour "freerunning", at first because of marketing reasons (he thought the britbongs would prefer an english name). But after a while it develloped more and more as a unique variant of Parcour, with less concern about "get from A to B as fluently and naturally as possible" and more concern about "express yourself, see your environment differently and being able to utilize it to develop yourself."

But in the end it doesn't matter. Just do what you want and call it what you like.

I have 1-3 months off at the end of my current contract that I can use to go anywhere and train. I'm not in shape like I used to be, but I'm still in decent shape compared to the rest of the population. I'm willing to train hard 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, and three or four hours on Sundays. I have next to no parkour experience. Where should I go to git gud?
>>
>>1088967
When the urban environment remains fruitless, there's often an oasis of a playground within the desert that is the land.
You could train just about anywhere.

Is there anywhere you want to visit?

If you like Parkour enough that you're willing to travel for the sole purpose of training, I don't know what to tell you.

Seattle Wa has Freeway Park, though; which is kind of nice, along with Gas Works Park being a popular spot, along with a Parkour gym.
Generally, Seattle itself isn't so bad for Parkour, if you're willing to climb up onto some rooftops; but there're better places, I believe.

I don't know.
There's usually a wall, though, so you can do a climb-up, you can use your feet to help you get up (different technique), more efficient on energy (I think).

I remember watching a video about 4-7 years ago.
It was probably a YouTube video.

It might've been a TV or something.

Maybe a competition/contest.

The traceurs were to run an ally way run.

I remember one of the guys doing a wall up to get up this wall, while another did something else, maybe a tic tac.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Makes me think about slow Parkour, kind of like the kind of Parkour you'd do after a natural disaster or something.
Or maybe during a Zombie Apocalypse, like those parts in The Last of Us.
You're moving around the ruined city, just passing by, no zombies around, walk, maybe jog a little, vault over the occasional obstacle, maybe a stride here and there, some climbing.

Kind of like the beginning of
