Mornin' /carnivorous/ general. I'll try and stray from Nepenthes for once - what's the tastiest shit I can grow on a sunny windowsill? I have strawberries and plums outside, but unfortunately I'm moving soon so I'll want to try something edible indoors.

Nightshade, datura, foxglove, hemlock, hogweed(don't), poison ivy, castor, death angel mushrooms.

Would advise against it, though. It's a setup for tragedy and woe.
>>

Like, it may sound cool to have all the dangerous plants growing, but all it takes is one errant pet or kid or one moment of negligence and someone's going to die.

Better off trying to cultivate weird stuff with actual uses beyond being horrifically maiming or lethal.

I have one, they're a lot like conifers, if you remove the clump of earth around the roots the plant has next to no chance of survival.

I use a curved spade to collect plants, I just bash it around the tap root and pull it out with as much earth as possible.

Well, shit. Then the specimens I collected today are doomed. I'll wait and collect berries.

My heliamphora is having such an awful time in my box. I honestly think it's just dying extremely slowly. I have a few dionaea around just chilling out side shooting the shit. And some pitcher rescues that are doing great.

I just leave the hardy ones out side all year long now, and they do great. I used to stress to much about them.

I do keep the droseras inside year round though. My spatulata is to beautiful to let die in the winter.

I don't fully agree with the other poster. Heliamphora are pretty easy as long as you give them a night time drop and enough light. If you're having issues with the cold aspect, then refrigerate distilled water and water the plant with it each night. Post of a pic of the plant, also.

I've had one on the windowsill for a year, another in a terrarium for half a year, neither has improved since I got it, or pitchered properly at all. In the same conditions, every sticky or toothy species I own is doing great. Not sure where I'm going wrong m8.

And good call on ramispina, I'll need something with a smooth, tight, non-striped peristome. I already have "Rebecca Soper" and copelandii as decent candidates, I might see if I can get a pure ramispina and reinwardtiana too.

Growing tips for venus fly traps?
>>
>>2158450
Copypaste from the old thread:

Well, let's go with the basics:
>Full sun plants. They need at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.
>Very sensitive to minerals in water: it never should be >80 ppm, use distilled water, osmotized, rain, etc.
>Back to the mineral sensitivity: use dry sphagnum, peat moss or live sphagnum as substrates, never fertilize. If you use peat moss add some aquarium sand to the mix.
>Respect their dormancy periods, they need 3 cold months per year.
>Flowering weakens them a lot, cut the flower stems when they start developing until you have some experience.
>They live in bogs, so they dehydrate fast. Keep the soil moist, have a traybof water under their pots to water them.
>They are sensitive to root overheating, clear colour pots work better. (Use plastic only, remember their sensitivity to minerals)

I think that's all, also don't be a retard and feed them sausages or something, they are insectivores and will do their thing, beware of birds, blackbirds destroy them.

I've never seen them produce so much mucilage. The leaf pullings produce so much they almost look like drosera. Here's my Moranensis var. Caudata after a few months in it

Same plant as of today
>>
>>2158977
They are basically clones of three plants:
Light pink or almost red: I had this one since 2011, very strong plant, divides a lot, decent size for a typical
Orage-ish, more erected: Had it since 2012, like the other one is very strong and divides a lot, another typical
The most reddish one, with red teeth too: Had it since 2012, I received it as a young plant so it didn't start dividing until 2014. Big colourful and strong too, it was a present for buying 2 akai ryu that I killed experimenting with new substrates. It was labelled as g14 x dentate.

>>2158979
>Have you noticed improvement with the mineral-heavy mix?
Yes, peat moss doesn't work well with mexican pings, they grow way better in cat litter. Live moss works equally well but you have to be able to keep it alive (I live in a very moist area).
Next year I'll try some new substrates, I have like 20 Pings right now so I'm not worried about losing one or two.

As spectacular as N. attenboroughii is, I'd have to recommend hamata over it. It takes a stupidly long time to grow - you'll be waiting at the very least a decade until you have anything that begins to resemble the massive conical adult pitchers. It also appears to be very fussy, likely needing high sunlight, very high air movement and night humidity, and ultramafic soil - it's so moody even Sir David himself is struggling to grow it. Personally, I've resigned myself to waiting until I have access to botanical garden tier conditions before I bother trying it again.

N. hamata on the other hand is surprisingly easy and actually grows, for a start. It will need to be in a high humidity terrarium when it's small, but once it's putting out dark adult-ish pitchers it becomes a much more forgiving plant. Just don't let it come into contact with parasites - thrips and spider mites in particular will FUCK hamata up in a heartbeat.

Nope. I just eat the fruit. These shots just grow on the stem. When they are ready you can easily pluck them off (I imagine how in the wild they would latch onto animals). If they are not completely ready I use a spoon and even a knife to gently pry and cut them off. Give a day to dry and then place on medium. Roots appear within six weeks. If they are a little shrivelled when harvesting, put them on a wet piece of paper for the night.

Thank you m8

I heard it grows slow and is finicky, but the air flow part is new to me
Luckily, especially my "baby HL terrarium" has great ventilation, as I'm allways paranoid about fungi/mold.

So attenboroughii grows really slow? Like lowii slow (~3 leafes a year)?
Have you tried growing this plant?

Oh, how fast does hamata grow? I found different infos on this.
Because I'm looking for something that doesn't grow too fast
Also, thanks for warning me about the parasites

I know what you mean, I've sworn myself to get a perfect greenhouse with a good cooling system, before I'll buy a villosa

Your light should work too for monte carlo
Are you able to get a second one of the one you bought and put it on your tank as well? Because that would o
Don't forget the CO2, as my monte carlo carpet is looking a bit sad now, because I didn't refill the CO2 for about 2 months..

pic related, it's my sad monte carlo

Also, either use floating plants or monte carlo, the floaters would dim the light which wouldn't be to the liking of the monte carlo

cymbidiums do poorly indoors.

it's pointless to grow them if they don't survive your climate, if you move them while they're in bloom they'll drop all flowers.

Regarding N. attenboroughii's conditions, I'm just going off what I've heard from some hardcore growers with larger specimens, and taking into account it grows on very exposed, often stormy peaks with high sunlight.

I currently have 2, a tiny seedling and a grown on seedling both in a terrarium. Both have barely done anything, the largest has put out 2 leaves since I got it in December and sadly the smallest got battered in the aftermath of a spider mite explosion in my collection, so it hasn't grown at all and will probably die in the near future. I'd say they're just far too much of a risk in anything but professional conditions.

N. hamata is much faster and infinitely more reliable. My ~3 inch diameter plant puts out a leaf/pitcher every couple of weeks, so it's certainly not a weed at this stage, it just has some pace to it. Better having a plant that actually grows though, right?
>>

No problem mate

N. hamata is a great milestone for anyone growing Neps, it's a visually-fantastic species but not too hard at all. Just a shame it's not as cheap as it used to be.

And that's a beast of a Miranda there, far bigger pitchers than anything from my lot at the moment. Bit of a size contrast to the piddly little N. tenuis vine I repotted earlier too.

Can't wait to get the hamata, it is allways exciting to watch the tiny plants develop

yea, the x miranda is pretty big, I got it, because my friend's mom wasn't able to get it to produce pitchers
Since I got it, it is producing a pitcher with every new leaf and has grown to about 80cm in diameter

Let's see how big the pitchers can get, the current ones are about 25cm high, so I guess they pretty much reached the maximum size

Any Dracaena plants are great indoor plants. They are pretty much impossible to kill unless you seriously fuck up. Phal orchids are also cool, though any orchid will require a significant deal more care than a normal non-exotic houseplant.
If you want some color and don't want to worry about root rot and fertilizers and moss and crown rot, then Anthurium and Spathiphyllum are excellent choices

As has already been said, hybrids DO usually grow much faster. Not well-versed in orchids but supermarket Phalaenopsis are incredibly common and easy, as are some Paphiopedilum hybrids.

As for Nepenthes, it depends on your conditions. Hot/humid country, you could try truncata or rafflesiana as >>2165419

Non-tropical/humid country, try ventricosa, maxima, spathulata or basically any hybrid involving those 3 for the easiest plant ever (these would all probably do ok somewhere hot to be fair). Pic related is my N. maxima x trusmadiensis, currently firing out pitchers about 20% bigger. Very fast and easy purely from maxima genetics.

I have two 10 gallon aquarium tanks. I was wondering how feasible would it be to create a mini-environment, but to make it simple without animals. So essentially I want to put dirt in the tank, add lil' lake and plant it. I would cover it with a mesh wire and keep it outside. Can plants live in these conditions? If so what are some good plants to put inside?
>>
>>2165808
Yeah, just look up a vivarium guide but dont add animals.

I'm in Dallas, but I don't think that matters much, there were a bunch of random plants in barrels outside, could be from anywhere. Guy at the bar (which recently opened) said some guys showed up as part of the renovation and put in a bunch of plants and that was it

If you're keeping it inside, you'll want to put it in a room with windows facing the proper direction so as to maximize the amount of sunlight.

On the rare occasions I fertilize my plants, I use foliar fertilizer only. I wouldn't risk soil stuff since cp roots burn so easily

Any recommendations for a pretty, elegant species of flower (like orchids, or similar) that can live in a small pot in a bedroom?
>>
>>2166836
Orchids are not recommended for a small pot (4in pot) unless you get a small orchid species. Most orchids are epiphytes and a small pot meand higher chance of root rot as the plant's root system expands and the media breaks down. Now you could go for the mounted orchid approach, but I would say just go for some tillandsia/ornamental bromeliads or decorative arums, not the ones that will make your room smell like shit for weeks.

Lol plants can suffer. Distressed plants give off chemicals to warn other of impending doom and to show that they are hurt. The smell of cut grass is a cocktail of pheremones that alerts other grass plants of danger

It might be nearly as slow as lowii, but it's piss easy and always guarantees a jump in leaf and pitcher size. Far more forgiving in regards to conditions too, it can happily grow in intermediate temperatures and isn't too fussy about humidity. (And nice singalana mate, checked yesterday and the one in my terrarium appears to be on the mend)

actually thinking about getting one now

Also, do you know how to grow Sphagnum moss at a bigger scale?
I always bought mine or used the one from my nepenthes pots or bog tubs.

I just found at least 5 Sphagnum species while hiking and seeing it grow in the typical large, carpet-like colonies, I thought of growing it at home for later use.

I remember seeing some people growing it in shallow crates, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

pic related, just took the photo
first time for me finding the red one around here
>>
>>2167965
This. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with robcantleyi but it seems to be as noob friendly as ventricosa. It should be marketed as a beginner's plant really, since it takes a hell of a lot of punishment, where other plants in its price range will die if you sneeze on them.
>>2168015
Use tupperware. Your robcantleyi will appreciate higher humidity from a living moss top dressing but it isnt necessary.
>>
>>2167968
That's pretty big for a typical
>>2167974
kek it won't be going away anytime soon
>>
>>2167914
No idea, since mine came as a large-ish plant. But I'd guess from seed, once it hits about 7 inches or so

As for purps, just go for it. Them little shits are piss easy too. I recommend cascade carnivores. Picked up my plant for under $20 after shipping and taxes and it's pretty big. The pot it's in is a 10in pot.
>>
>>2168015
Very nice, I don't have any of the cute red stuff personally, just a big pillowy green species and a darker spindly species (quite good for small nep top dressings).

Out of boredom/experimentation I started growing both in bags and old yoghurt pots in any spare space in the terrariums. They're only 1x2ft tanks and I don't have any automation, so the humidity isn't great, but I would estimate I still get a handful of new Sphagnum generated every couple of weeks. I know folks with large-scale growing areas and highland greenhouses just grow waterlogged trays full of the stuff and have a constant supply, but you can still get a decent amount with shit noob terrariums like mine.
>>
>>2168023
thanks
so should I just put it in big, transparent tupperware container with a lid?
