How often do you get cases of that?
>>
We do get tick infestation cases every now and then. Tick fever and such. But this is the worst we've seen yet.
>>
That's gross af
>>
P.s. the whole ear was covered with ticks you couldn't even see the skin.
>>
Was the other ear similar? Was it a stray or owned by someone lazy?
>>
Poor doggo
>>
>>2153578
Yup the other ear was similar. And it was a stray.
>>
Are the big bulbous light brown ones dead and still latched on?
>>
What do you do with the ticks after they are removed?
>>
>>2153586
Before extraction we sprayed on some medicine kill them. Basically they're dead but their 'teeth' are still latched onto the skin.
>>
>>2153588
We soak them in alcohol so they're dead then just flush them down the sink
>>
How often do you get stray animals with (presumably) breast tumors that burst? I've already seen 2 this year. Is there anything you can do to save an animal with that? I work at a shelter, both cases were bad, infected open wounds and had to be put down
>>
>>2153591
good job op. as an animal lover i thank you. please make another thread if you can posting a before/after photo of that dog and other animals you've treated
>>
>>2153570
>>2153572
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
>>
>>2153596
We see tumours fairly often. Both internal and external tumours. Maybe on a daily basis(?) Once awhile we get tumours that turn into abscess and sometimes they do rupture. Usually we treat it as a an open wound first to allow the pus to drain. Because it's not advisable to operate(remove the tumour) in fear the infection would travel inside the body. Once the infection goes down, we proceed to remove the tumour by operation.
>>
>>2153596
Have yet to seen a breast tumour that has burst.
>>
Poor fellow. Good on you for saving an innocent doggo, OP! I am sure he/she is really happy to have all those ticks gone.

What's next for him/her? I assume you work with a shelter and the doggo will get altered and try to find a home?
>>
What is this stuff? Bug asses? Swollen skin?

I was always fascinated by pulling parasites out of someone's flesh. Should've become vet too so I could do it myself.
>>
>>2153662
They are tick asses after they drink a bunch of blood. The mouths are clamped down underneath.

I think they like dog ears because they're full of blood and more dark and moist than most other parts of the body.
>>
I'm happy that poor dogger is okay. Good job OP.
>>
>>2153570

Can I vomit now or should I wait
>>
Do ticks actually go inside the earhole?
>>
>>2153811
They do. Not OP, but I have pulled ticks out of there, but I think it is more rare than having them stuck on the pinna. The most memorable pup was assumed to be deaf, but he wasn't. He just had a few big ol ticks blocking his ear canal.
>>
Fuck ticks. Literally the worst animals. It makes me so mad when I feel a tick petting my dogger.
>>
gross

when I was a kid, I used to pull these off of all the strays i'd pick up from god even knows where. I lived nexted to a cat lady (literally had 98 cats in her apartment. Used to take them to a petsmart in the next county once a week to get them adopted) that taught me how to pluck the head so it wouldnt come off and bury itself further under the skin

Would also spend hours popping fleas between my thumbnails before I was old enough to afford flea medication. Cured a case if earmites once with straight peroxide swabbings

Gross but good times
>>
>>2153821
How so you even go about removing ticks that are inside the ear? It seems like it would be almost impossible with the dog moving and working in such a small, dark canal.

I once had a little maltese dog come in and I discovered 6 fully engorged Austalian paralysis ticks on her neck and face.
She couldn't have weighed more than 12lbs, but the only symptom she showed with me was a tiny bit of vomiting.
Her owners rushed her to the vet and had the anitserum just in time, so she was fine.
If she hadn't come in for grooming on that particular day, she very well could have been dead by the next morning.
It was freaky.

>>
>>2153570
I can never understand how living creatures who wind up like this aren't deaf for life.

With that sheer amount of tics you'd think at least one of them would be shoved deep enough by it's peers into the ear canal to rupture something.

>>
>>2155510

>>
>>2155516
I would think she would be deaf by now too. But surprisingly not, she still responds to sounds. So that's really good :D
>>
>>2155571
It's okay. You're not alone.
>>
>>2154913
We don't practise zeutering here. But I supposed standard castration would be a better choice as zeutering could still allow small amounts of testesterones to be released (?) Well, that's just my opinion from what I read.
>>

This is like fucking with my natural grooming instincts. How the fuck did you even get those off?
>>
>>2153570
Any pics of the other ear?
>>
>>2155674
Nah. Didn't take any more pics other than these 3. The other ear is exactly the same anyway. Full of them freaking ticks.
>>
This is gross but at the same time it makes me wish I could be the one to address it. It's like watching videos where they pop cysts and what not. There's something satisfying about the idea of removing an infestation like that. It's almost like I'm glad that the infestation exists, just so that it's there to be cleaned up. I don't know how to describe it. It's the autistic/OCD part of my brain that wants to remove every tick one by one.
>>
The worst part is that the dog could probrably hear the hundreds of insects feasting and scratching and wriggling.

Every time it woke up, every time it fell asleep.

Is the person who brought the dog in paying for everything? Just curious. I'm glad it got brought in. I hope they really do adopt the doggo.
I've brought in strays before and am typically able to pay at least $400 for treatment but if it's something terribly expensive or a long haul treatment that isn't comfortable in the slightest then they pretty much just get put down.

Question: How do you remove a tick without leaving the head and proboscis embedded inside the skin? Is there any way to do this at home in case my dog ever gets a tick?

Also, is there any way to remove a tick without allowing it to vomit any of the blood back inside the flesh, thus decreasing the chance of infection/disease?
>>
>>2156366
>The newfag is strong in this thread.

Yeah, what's wrong with you people that can't stand seeing an animal experiencing something so horrible that they won't even allow it on vet shows like Dr. Pol?

Oh, that's right, normal people don't enjoy watching animals suffer from health issues that will literally cause you to vomit if you don't have a strong stomach.

Clearly only newfags would find this content inconvenient.

Oh man, OP, that's awful. Poor doggo. I'm glad he was brought in so that you could help him.

And good on you. Ticks freak me out so bad. I couldn't even get near that many ticks, let alone stick around for 2+ hours to remove them all. Thanks for being a hero to that poor dog!
>>
>>2156395
>The newfag is strong in this thread.

Yeah, what's wrong with you people that can't stand seeing an animal experiencing the sweet relief of having thousands of parasites removed?

Oh, that's right, normal people don't enjoy watching animals being rescued my humane individuals and then being adopted out to good loving permanent homes.

Clearly only newfags would find this content inconvenient.
>>
>>2156605
But any kind of bad stimuli will cause the tic to regurgitate as much blood as it can back into the host before pulling itself out, to make itself as lightweight and fast as possible to escape.

Arent ticks poisonous to dogs?
>>
>>2157157
ticks are potentially deadly to anyone, including you. It's pretty rare for them to inject enough venom to cause a problem though. They usually release their venom when they're full and about to leave.
>>
>>2157161
Yeah but I was wondering if that kind of infestation doesnt happen to wild animals commonly how could it happen to a dog stray or otherwise

Pull them out carefully, you don't want the mouthparts to remain in the dog.

You don't want to poison/smother them as this tends to lead to the ticks regurgitating into the dog- a recipe for lyme disease.

>Ticks may be small, but they can result in very harmful health effects. Heavy infestations can result in hair loss, behavioral changes, and even massive blood loss. Recently, states like Idaho have reported sightings of so-called “ghost moose,” or moose so infected with ticks that they appear white, hairless, and gaunt.

>“Infested moose can have tens of thousands of ticks,” the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (DFG) said in a press release. “One dead moose was documented to have over 100,000 ticks. Pity the biologist who had to do that necropsy and count them!”

What benefits does this give to the tick? Once the host is paralyzed, pack-mates of the hosts tries to help and get infested too? More safe exit from the paralyzed host? Just to fuck things up even more?
>>
Op here. Just to make things clear, I live in a warm climate country. So yes, ticks are a common problem that we see here.
>>
>>2160859
Some animals are better at grooming themselves and eat/kill the ticks in the process. So it might benefit the tick to paralyze their host so it can't kill it before it gets a chance to get its meal and detach
