Anything with a footprint of 60x30cm is good enough for kuhli loaches, and they seem to be pretty much shrimp safe. They don't actively hunt cherry shrimps, and they will probably love burrowing in your pearlweed carpet. What do you mean by "others like," as in loaches? Bottom feeders? Fish in general?

You can stick a sponge on pretty much anything. All you need to do is make sure it's aquarium grade, cut it into the over all right shape, then cut a small hole in one end so it fits snugly over the opening.

Alright anons tell me everything I've done wrong. I don't know anything about aquariums and I've only got this guy because I felt bad for him. He was part of some chicks science experiment and got put into some shitty small self sustaining aquarium, then he got put into an much larger one with around 4 angel fish. His fins looked like shit and I didn't want him to die.
He killed like 3 of the angelfish though

Putting a sponge on the end of it like that wouldn't do much since it'll only pull water through the sponge through that tiny opening on the bottom.
You'd be better off cutting the sponge to fit inside the filter (those cartridges it comes with are pretty bad) or buying/making a sponge filter (they start at about $3 on eBay) and using the air pump on that instead.

You need a bigger tank for starters, five gallons at the very least. He needs a heater and a filter. Gravel is a shitty substrate, and plants would also help, but if you're going to get a fake one, then get a silk one, because plastic ones would cut his fins. Make sure the top you get for him is sealed, but also has holes in it of some kind so he can breathe. They're jumpers. They enjoy bloodworms.

The gravel is a bit garish, but that's up to taste. A 5 gallon tank is recommended, but 2.5 gallons is acceptable as a minimum.
Doesn't look too bad, but you should get some kind of hardscape/cave (a terra cotta pot would do) and a small heater. The light might not be too good for plants, it looks like it's incandescent.
Also, fill it up all the way and plug in the filter.

You can spoil your betta with a 10 gallon tank, the Petco dollar per gallon sale is soon. 2.5 to 5 gallons is fine, but he'll appreciate a whole 10 gallon to dart around and lounge. The cost of setting up a proper 10 gallon isn't really different than a 2.5 or 5g, so spend a little extra

Yes they do, and you don't have to worry about it clogging up the water flow. If the sponge blocks it too much simply take it off and trim around the edges to make it a little smaller. You don't need a giant massive clump of sponge on your filter. Just a decent sized chunk that can house all that delicious beneficial bacteria.
You can probably google "aquarium sponge" or even search directly on amazon and other websites so you can buy it online. I am pretty sure different companies and brands label their individual stuff under different names. But fellow anons can feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Are you filling it with water? Doing "trees" in aquariums is pretty tedious and requires a lot of maintenance, which is only made worse by the way the Fluval Edge tanks are built.

Copy pasting from previous thread.
So I have two planted vases with API first layer, added conditioner and bacteria starters a couple of weeks ago. One of them developed that white protein film, it's not exposed to light very often since it's in a bathroom with no windows. I've already stuck one ghost shrimp in there.
The other is next to the kitchen window, has grown a thick, mucus-y green/gray slimy film on surface and on the leaves of the plants in there and anything I put in it will freak out. What do I do about this? Pic related. I took a lot of slime out last night, but the water has never been as clear as the first bowl. I also have some manzanita in there.
Both have normal nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, ph, hardness, etc.
I'm also looking at nerite snails one for each vase. I don't want any fish in them, just a snail per vase and a few shrimp or something.
I love kuhli loaches. This is one of mine.
I have a 40 gallon looking to set up goldfish. What kind of goldfish and how many should I do? Looking to do a setup similar to pic related.

40 isn't big for goldfish, you might want to upgrade that tank later. I wouldn't put more than three goldfish in there. They're dirty fish, and they get enormous.
As for type, I personally like comets. But that's just me. You probably want fancy goldfish for that tank size, they don't get as big.
I'm no goldfish expert, hopefully someone else can weigh in, but I would think that if you want more than 3-4 small goldfish, you'd have to upgrade that tank to at least a 55.
Experience: I havent had my own tank ever, just a partner with his (cichlid) tanks. But I would always help with water changes and stuff.
Anyway, I'd like to start a cichlid tank. I'm pretty familiar with their breeding and behavior habits. I'd like about 5 fish give or take. Or a couple and breed them.
What size gallon tank would be best?

Rules for goldfish:
>Fancy- 20 gal for first fish, additional 10 gals for every added fancy
>Commons/Comets/Shubunkins- 40 gal for first fish, 20 gals for each additional Common/Comet/Shubunkins
>Koi- 10 gallons per inch of fish
>never keep Fancies with Commons, Comets, or Koi. Fancy goldfish have a harder time retrieving food and can be stressed or starved out by the other's.
This is because fancy goldfish are known as "fantails", with a long, butterfly-like twin tail. They are also smaller and fat. Commons and Koi are single-tails, and are longer, so they are faster swimmers and better at getting food.
>Koi and Commons can be kept together but you'll need a fuck ton of space and filtration. If you're keeping Fancies, only keep them with other Fancies
So in a 40 gallon tank, you could keep 3 fancy goldfish. You can keep black moors with other fancy goldfish, just none of the common types. Moors are a type of telescope-eye, which means their huge anime eyeballs are susceptible to harm from aggressive fish or sharp decor.
Personally, I think you're well-off with 3 Fancies. There are SO MANY types to choose from, and they can be very beautiful and fun to watch. And honestly, if you go ahead and over-filter and clean it a lot, you could probably get a 4th one in there, too. But it's usually better to understood tanks in the long run.
I made a pic for you. Top is a Common goldfish (Comets are those but with longer fins) and bottom is a Fancy (there are a ton of weird looking fancy goldfish out there, but that's the general body shape and tail you're looking for). Now do some googling with the information I've given you, friendo

Well, the only stuff I'd put in those would be plants. Maybe ghost shrimp. As for the protein film, thats because you have no water flow to break it up. Also the reason anything you put in the "warmer" tank is because its got less oxygen than the other one and its got no flow to break up the protien film. That film inhibits oxygen exchange at the surface. What you need is a small power head, or pump thats Like a 10gph one. Id set up a piece of driftwood and mount the pump on it and let it dribble down the wood into the vase. Have the intake covered by a sponge and hide it behind the drift wood. This will help all the previous mentioned issues you will have in long term. Also it'll provide your plants with water flow which they need to obtain nutrients from the water column. You can get sme fairly small driftwood for pretty cheap the pum and the sponge might be about $25. But it'll help you in the end. If you set it up like this you can probably house several amano shrimp or maybe even cherry shrimp if the temps stay somewhat stable.

Feeder fish are purposefully stunted as juveniles, and that affects their adult size by a lot.
over half of comets are as well. This is done with any fish that's ordered in large quantities in order to produce batches of fish all the same size from hatchings that happened weeks or months apart.
upshot is /an/'s thing with giant goldfish isn't really likely to happen. It's possible, but it's also extremely rare for a feeder or a commercial comet to get much over 4 inches.

Are you set on rift lake cichlids? If not, 20 gallon is good for breeding a pair of Bolivian rams or kribensis. For them you'd want driftwood instead of the holey rock.
For rift lake cichlids, a 29 gallon is large enough for some of the smaller Tanganyika cichlids, like Julidochromis or Neolamprologus, but for most you'll need at least a 40 gallon long and a filter rated for 1.5-2x the size of the tank. For HOB, Fluval AquaClear filters are pretty good as long as you keep them clean, or you can get a canister filter like SunSun.
Rift lake cichlids usually tear up live plants anyway, and ideally you'd want the pH buffered to 8 or 9, which is too high for most plants.

You can use really any sponge that doesn't dissolve. But you and use the sponge filters they have for aquariums. Just get some tubing and hook it up and stick a small chucnk of the sponge at the end of it. You just have to rinse it every now and again. If you need a new one just cut a chunk.
Ill post a link of the pump, or "a" pump similar to what you may need. This one is slightly big for what you're looking for. So, just try to find one in the range of 10-40gph any more than that might be too strong of a flow.

I recently caught a wild baby bullhead catfish, he never comes out of his hollow log except when it's pitch black, he doesn't even come out when it's very dim. Will he be ok only eating when I sleep? Can I remove his logs so he will be forced to move around and eat during the day?
My kuhlis always like to hang out in the front of the tank now. Seems like they have no problems being out in the open as long as there's bushy cover within darting distance, I'm really glad I rescaped so I can see them much more often!

There are at least three stores around me that regularly sell "jumbo" comet goldfish that are 6, 8, and 10 inches long.
Okay so here I was just chillin with my leopard gecko when I look up into my African Clawed Frog tank and notice this little squirmy thing floating through the water. Upon closers inspection, I saw that it was a very small worm-like thing that resembled a clear tube, except with one end darker, which is what I'd assume would have been guts or something. It moved and squirmed like a mosquito larvae, but was smaller than one and had no defining features. It was very tiny and I only noticed it because it was swimming right in the middle of the tank and the light hit it.
I got it out but promptly realized that there are like, 2 more in there, hanging out near the top, being pushed around by the filter's current.
What the fuck are these things??? Are they a parasite of some sort? It's a 10 gallons tank with 1 female African Clawed Frog in there and 3 Zebra Nerite snails for cleanup. That's it, there are no live plants, only artificial ones and some other underwater decor. There are other tanks and animals in the room but I haven't noticed the little squirmy worms in the other (painted turtle tank and guppy tank).
I'm super worried so any ideas as to what they might be will help

Sounds like they might be harmless nematodes. They come in through introduced things like plants, fish, or snails and thrive when there's a bunch of shit everywhere. Beyond looking really gross and their population can explode and then becomes a bitch to get rid of, they're relatively harmless (they can fuck up some types of fish while others can feed on them safely) Turtle and frog would most likely be unaffected at all

I feel for you. It's mostly american's I see that still keep fish in shitty bowls or too small tanks. I'm not even a PETA-moron, but really glad that for example in germany it's prohibited to sell/advertise bowls for fishkeeping or keeping big species in too small tanks.
In general aquariums seem to be a big hobby here and many fishkeepers seem to be more willing to inform themselves beforehand to allow their prospective pets to have a good time and don't see them as disposable or a piece of furniture.
Maybe over time, the position on fish also changes overseas.
So some new zebra danios I got are biting all my other fish. By all my other fish I mean my 7 corys. By biting I mean aggressively nipping/chasing.
So I transferred the 5 zebras to a spare 5 gallon tank I had after I found my panda cory with 1/2 a tail.
Question is do I just keep them in that 5 gallon tank or cull them. My LFS doesn't take back fish due to fear of contamination and I don't know anyone that wants 5x 1 dollar fish. I have no problem culling these fish after what they did to my corys, but I do have a problem with torturing them in a 5 gallon tank if it's too small for them.

Zebra danios are crazy hardy and they're not especially dirty fish, so it's kind of a stretch to say they'll "suffer" in a 5 gallon, but it's certainly not going to give them the swimming room they would prefer, since they are really active.

Omega One goldfish pellets. Omega One is a good brand as far as easily available stuff, and pellets are better than flakes, so you didn't do too bad. The only reason I'd be hesitant with the bottom feeder ones is that they're designed to sink quickly, which means they're more likely to fall in the gravel where the fish can't get them and rot.
You can also feed them anacharis or softened pieces of spinach, peas, zucchini, broccoli, etc.

I thought long and hard about it but I have decided that I transferred nothing between aquariums. The only thing that would have gone between the two was my gravel vacc when I was doing cleanings/water changes last weekend. I put the pleco in the turtle tank like last weekend, and now pic related is showing up on the mopani wood in there. I assumed it was just his poop, but could it have been nematodes all along? I've had the turtle for a year and a half and never noticed anything like this until the pleco arrived.
And the frog I've had since December, but the 3 Nerites were added app. a month ago. There are less nematodes in the frog tank and they seem to be much tinier.
I also have a 5 gal fancy guppy tank but I've noticed no nematodes in it, probably due to the babies.
That being said, they fucking disgust me and I want them gone. How do I go about this? One of my work associates in the fish department said that aquarium salt could kill them?

Hydroponics is a lot more than just hooking up a sump with fish to a fluidized grow bed.
The fish only provide CO2, nitrates and some phosphates through their shit, you still need other nutrients to grow vegetables.
Do some more research to see if you actually want to do hydroponics.

Don't do it, it's not safe for ling term. I made a moss tree from non petrified wood that i found. It worked for a few months untill eventually it dissolved the outer layers to the softer inner parts which started leeching into my water column and causing an algae outbreak. Also you do not want bark left on the wood, since It rots too fast and will fuck up your water as well. So its best to avoid non petrified wood in the aquarium.

Goldfish? Yeah, a 55 is a good size for two of them.
Java moss is stupidly tough, so I don't think they'd eat it, but if you happen to get some asshole goldfish they might tear it apart anyway. Depends on the individual fish.

I went through all the steps to resolve the issue. Then i removed the wood for a short time, all the algae went away. So i left it out. The same thing happend to my brothers tank which had the same piece of wood before i took it since i was skeptical. The balance act is 100 times harder with decaying wood in the tank. Its a fair warning to all that search for their own drift wood. Make sure its petrified wood.

I've noticed he doesn't really seem to eat. I put some freeze dried blood worms in there, but he hardly seemed interested. He might have eaten them while I was at work, but it's hard to tell with the floating wisteria in there.
I was thinking about getting some frozen blood worm cubes and seeing if he'll eat those. Will bettas eat a bloodworm if they find it sitting at the bottom of the tank? Or are they inclined to just eat from the water surface? Just curious so that I can throw some of the sinking blood worms in there and will definitely be able to tell if he ate them or not.

Unless your tank is fuckhuge, just get a separate aquarium and breed them in there, and put the babies in when you want to feed the turtle. Your turtle will eat more than they can sustain, and will severely stress out pregnant females and fry. The small fry everywhere will also make it hard to siphon turtle shit and do water changes without sucking a bunch up.

I have a few guppy fry in another tank, could those work? He might also be stressed still from being in that stupid cup. He seemed active at the store but I noticed he wasn't eating there, either. But he's not lethargic or anything, and he might have actually eaten the blood worms, I just can't tell. If he's flaring at a tank side it's likely because he's fighting his reflection. It's good exercise, I hear but not longterm
Some betta will fight their reflection endlessly. This eventually tires and stresses the fish out. Stressed fish get sick so make sure to curb that behavior
