I'd like to learn how hacking/cracking is done.
The few hackers I've spoken to basically say if I need to ask then I shouldn't bother talking to them.
Where does education begin? How does one learn hacking at noob level?
You have to be interested in systems and you have be to curious about how they work.
Then you can start to exploit them. Hacking isn't just IP network stuff, there's lots of hardware hacks you can do

Sounds like ego-driven script kiddies with no knowledge to share, hence they can't/won't share with you.
Learn operating systems, services, internet protocols, various coding languages (php,java,c,c++) and go from there. Brute stack overloads, read source code, modify source code, distribute source code, bla bla bla.
