I can definitely see how Osomatsu is popular on different levels. While the fujoshi definitely have a part in the sales, especially the merchandise, the show is something that could easily appeal to a non-otaku viewer or someone who liked the original series. The only otaku-esque parts about the show are the fact that the main characters are NEETs, the (now removed) first episode, and Choromatsu being a wota, but for the most part the show is very easy for people who don't watch anime normally to get into. The art, comedy, and episode setup are all pretty uncommon for anime, so it can appeal to non-otaku who don't enjoy normal anime, as well as otaku who are looking for something different.
