Literally every character has a twist, to what seems to be their archetype at first.

Asuka only uses the tsun attitude as a mask so people don't see her real "self"

Rei is probably the "most archetype-like" since her dandere character arc is about resolving that archetype she actually is for real.

Shinji isn't just a whiny protagonist, since he has the potential to become badass, once he gets just a bit confidence.

And basicaly every character self-reflects on themselves like crazy. Self-reflection is probably the most unsubtle method of creating character depth.

I can't really say if he's good or realistic, but I can't relate to him at all. Mostly because of his overbearing daddy issues.
I have a dad, not the best dad but he's there, so i can't really feel empathetic for someone who selfishly thinks of himself and when he's asked to help save the world because it was his dad that asked him.

Being terrified over piloting hulking, living robots and fighting giant death machines is perfectly understandable, though I don't feel that Anno transmitted that fear very well. They never felt that scary to me.

All of you people that think 2d is realistic need to seek help.

You're wrong, on June 6th, 1944 boys aged 16-17 threw themselves into German machine guns and faced certain death. In the same war 13-14 year olds who'd never even seen a man killed or even a gun, were sent into the fray against the 2 million German Army. In extraordinary circumstances, when lives are at stake, most people respond by doing what they can do, that's what history has shown us. Man and boy a like, with the weight of the world on their shoulders tend to fear the price of failure more than they fear for their own lives.
