Is Subaru the best written character in anime over the last decade?
He was doing pretty well and it was clear that his stubborn personality would eventually cause problems but his shift in character from the start of this arc was far too abrupt and extreme to be fitting.
I surprised someone as brave as him became a NEET in the first place.

After the mansion arc they completely dropped all the character development he had received. That is not how well written characters are handled.
I don't really think he's that well written at all. It feels more like a horror movie since all we're doing is mostly seeing him suffer. His actual character seems to come second to the torture porn.

The problem with Subaru is that he is an egocentrical sperglord that does everything with the afterthought of being loved and getting attention. Episode 13 was very clear about it. So when Julius showed up, Subaru got mad that Emilia started ignoring him in favor of her duties and took Julius as a rival as he seemed rather close to Emilia. Afraid of losing Emilia, he sperged like an idiot in front of everyone, and lost Emilia as a result. Not being able to get the attention he needs, he started to get involved with people but those ended up being cold and distant towards him while still ignoring Rem because he's hypnotized by Emilia so, when he heard about Emilia being in danger, he took it as his cue to start being close to her again and decided to leave for the mansion. On the way, Rem went ahead without him and he took it as mistrust from her, making him lose the only person that was beside him. And then he goes to the mansion, faces the horrors of the Cultists and understands that everyone is dead and that he's alone again in his new ordeal (he hadn't looped since episode 7, mind you, which was some 3 weeks before) and immediately starts ignoring everything and tries to find comfort in his affection, thinking that everything will be alright if he just stays in his world. This gets Rem tortured and she dies in his arms after her love declaration so he decides to finish it again, goes to the mansion and faces his inevitable death after another grim reminder that everything will end the same again if he does not act.

Subaru has self-esteem issues (daddy related). he is basically a competitive guy. In real life, he was a cheerful and extroverted type like we saw in the earlier episodes. He acted like that, because his father acted like that as well. And he was popular. But his classmates started to hate Subaru for being apparently too cocky and annoying. Subaru started to reject going school.
When he was summoned in the new world, he tried to act again in his cheerful way, because inside him he is basically a friendly guy, and he wishes to be liked and accepted. He thought he could start another life from zero in this world. But at the mansion he was hated, despite he was doing his best to be liked, and he wasn't able to understand the reason. His wish to be appreciated is huge, and this can bring him to be selfish. He wanted to be liked and a hero so bad. specially to be loved by Emilia. But Emilia saw he was acting without even considering her personal wishes, just his own wishes. She was partially right when she said he was doing most of the things for his own sake.
Later Subaru will admit all of this. And in the episode 18, From Zero, he will admit in front of Rem he wears the mask of a clown just to hide his weakness. His fear to be rejected. And he blames the other people for his failures (like he did in the episode 14). He hates himself. But it's not easy to change.
He is really well written for sure.
