The reason why Frieza survived the Spirit Bomb on Namek.
It's actually easy to explain. Notice how when the bomb hits Frieza he was constantly able to hold it with his hands even as it was pushing him to the ground. This way, when it finally exploded, he was not fully inside the spirit bomb and thus was able to avoid the main area of destruction. Notice that in other instances, many times enemies were completely engulfed in the bomb and we're completely inside, taking maximum damage. Vegeta took this as his entire body was surrounded by the bomb and only barely survived because of his willpower.
Majin Buu also tried to push the bomb back but when Goku got his strength back he forced the bomb forwards, making it completely engulf Buu so that he was inside the bomb, thus causing every part of his body to be disintegrated.

He's expressed interest in training again so at least he won't completely fall behind, what more do you want him to do? He'd have to bust his ass and do nothing but train every day for years in order to catch up to Goku and Vegeta, and by then they'd already be on a new level so he'd still be behind.
And in doing so he wouldn't be able to spend any time with his growing daughter or wife, and would have to completely neglect his scholarly duties which he obviously values more than fighting
